Palesteena - Original Dixieland Jazz-Band , 1920 PALESTEENA (Lena From Palesteena) Shimmy by J. Russel Robinson & Con Conrad In the Bronx of New York City Lived a girl, she's not so pretty Lena is her name. Such a clever girl is Lena How she played her concertina Really, it's a shame. She's such a good musician She got a swell position To go across the sea to entertain. And so they shipped poor Lena Way out to Palesteena From what they tell me, she don't look the same. They say that Lena is the Queen o' Palesteena Just because she plays the concertina. She only knows one song, She plays it all day long Sometimes she plays it wrong, But still they love it What more of it I heard her play once or twice. Oh! Murder! Still, it was nice. All the girls, they dress like Lena Some wear oatmeal, some Farina Down old Palesteena way. Lena's girlfriend Arabella Let her meet an Arab fella Who she thought was grand. On a camel's back a-swaying You could hear Miss Lena playing Over the desert sand. She didn't know the new ones All she knew were blue ones And Yusef sat and listened all day long (or: Till Yusef sat and listened in his tent) And as he tried to kiss her You heard that Arab whisper, "Oh Lena, how I love to hear your song!" (or: "Oh Lena, how I love your instrument!") They say that Lena is the Queen o' Palesteena 'Cause she shakes a wicked concertina. She plays it day and night She plays with all her might She never gets it right, You think it's funny, Gets her money. There's nothin' sounds like it should. So rotten, it's really good. While the Arabs danced so gaily She would practice aily-aily Down old Palesteena way. Lena, she's the Queen o' Palesteena Goodness, how they love her concertina. Each movement of her wrist Just makes them shake and twist They simply can't resist How they love it Want more of it. When she squeeks That squeeze-box stuff All those sheiks Just can't get enough. She got fat as he got Lena Pushing on her concertina Down old Palesteena way. The ORIGINAL DIXIELAND JAZZ BAND billed themselves "The Creators of Jazz". Their record "Livery Stable Blues" became the first Jazz record ever released on February 26, 1917 for the Victor Talking Machine Company. It was wildly successful. Its release signaled the beginning of the Jazz age and helped define the wild, exuberent era we call the "Roaring Twenties". The Original Dixieland Jazz Band in 1916 moved from New Orleans to Chicago and then to New York where, on the recommendation of Al Jolson, they landed a gig at Reisenweber's Café on Columbus Circle and 58th Street, a fashionable restaurant and night-spot. The band was an immediate success, with their top hats that spelled out "Dixie", playing the trombone's slide with the foot, and so on. Their leader Nick La Rocca and cornet player delighted in stirring up the press, describing themselves as musical anarchists and coining fun statements like "Jazz is the assassination of the melody, it's the slaying of syncopation". After the Reisenweber's Café engagement end the band played at the Alamo Cafe (148th Street) and the College Inn at Coney Island. The Original Dixieland Jazz Band went on to record and play in London, producing 20 tracks for Columbia. They returned to America in July of 1920, but the public began to tire of them and they never regained the sales or popularity of their initial success. The group broke up in 1925 after La Rocca suffered a nervous breakdown. (info based upon:redhotjazz.com) Tags: 1920s dance bands Palestine Jewish Immigration America cabaret Roaring Twenties shimmy |

Joe "King" Oliver's Jazz Band - Too Bad Cornet player Oliver started his career in New Orleans in the 1910's, where before long his band was considered the hottest and best. After travels through California, by 1922 Oliver was the jazz "King" in Chicago with King Oliver and his Creole Jazz Band performing at the Royal Gardens. In the mid and late 1920s Oliver's band transformed into a hybrid of the old New Orleans style jazz band and the nationally popular larger dance band, and was called "King Oliver & His Dixie Syncopators". Oliver started to suffer from gum disease which started to diminish his playing abilities, but remained a popular band leader through the decade. The Great Depression was harsh to Oliver; he lost his life savings, the band broke up and he died in poverty at a rooming house. Musically speaking, he was a real pioneer in many techniques (use of mutes, including the plumber's plunger, derby hat, and bottles and cups in the bell of his horn). Oliver was also noted as a composer, having written many tunes still regularly played, including "Dippermouth Blues", "Sweet Like This", "Canal Street Blues", and "Doctor Jazz". This brilliant recording was made for Vocalion on March 11th, 1926. Tags: Too Bad Joe King Oliver Jazz Band 78RPM |

At the Jazz Band Ball - Patruno, Davern, Crimmins Oscar Klein (trumpet), Kenny Davern (clarinet), Roy Crimmins (trombone), Isla Eckinger (bass), Gregor Beck (drums) http://www.linopatruno.it http://www.cambiamusica.it http://www.michaelsupnick.com Kenny Davern (January 7, 1935—December 12, 2006), born John Kenneth Davern, was one of the premier jazz clarinetists of his generation. He was born in Huntington, Long Island to a family of mixed Jewish and Irish-Catholic ancestry.[1] His mother's family originally came from Vienna, Austria, where his great-grandfather Alfred Roth had been a colonel in the Austro-Hungarian cavalry, the highest rank accessible to a Jew in the Habsburg Imperial army. After hearing Pee Wee Russell the first time, he was convinced that he wanted to be a jazz musician, too; and at the age of 16 he joined the musician's union, first as a baritone saxophone player. In 1954 he joined Jack Teagarden's Band, and after only a few days with the band he made his first jazz recordings. Later on, he worked with bands lead by Phil Napoleon and Pee Wee Erwin before joining the Dukes of Dixieland in 1962. The late 1960s found him free-lancing with, among others, Red Allen, Ralph Sutton, Yank Lawson and his life-long friend Dick Wellstood. At this time, he had also taken up the soprano saxophone, and when a spontaneous coupling with fellow reedman Bob Wilber at Dick Gibson's Colorado Jazz Party turned out be a huge success, one of the most important jazz groups of the 1970s, Soprano Summit, was born. Co-led by Wilber and Davern, both switching between the clarinet and various saxophones, during the next five years Soprano Summit enjoyed a very successful string of record dates and concerts. When the group disbanded in 1979, Davern devoted himself to solely playing clarinet, preferring trio formats with piano and drums. His collaboration with Bob Wilber was revived in 1991, the new group being called Summit Reunion. Leading his own quartets since the 1990s, Davern has preferred the guitar to the piano in his rhythm section, employing guitarists Bucky Pizzarelli, Howard Alden and James Chirillo. In 1997, he was inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame at Rutgers University, and in 2001 he received an honorary doctorate of music at Hamilton College, Clinton, New York. In addition to the jazz greats that inspired him, Kenny Davern indicates classical clarinetist David Weber, principal solo clarinetist with the New York City Ballet Orchestra, as his most important teacher. Although playing mainly in traditional jazz and swing settings, his musical interests encompass a much broader range of styles. In 1978 he collaborated with avantgarde players Steve Lacy, Steve Swallow and Paul Motian on a free jazz-inspired album appropriately entitled Unexpected. In addition to his accomplishments in jazz, his ardour and knowledge of classical music is encyclopaedic, particularly of the work of conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler. Especially since he has been concentrating on exclusively playing the clarinet, Kenny Davern has been calling his own an unmatched mastery of the instrument. A full, rounded tone, especially "woody" in the lower chalumeau register, combined with highly personal tone inflections and the ability to hit notes far above the conventional range of the clarinet, have made his sound immediately recognizable. In the late 1980s, the New York Times hailed him as "the finest jazz clarinetist playing today". Kenny died of a heart attack at his Sandia Park, New Mexico home. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_Davern Tags: Oscar Klein Kenny Davern Roy Crimmins Isla Eckinger Gregor Beck jazz bix bederbecke |

Big Noise from Winnetka - Climax Jazz Band 1991 Big Noise from Winnetka - Climax Jazz Band 1991 As bassist of the Bob Crosby Bob Cats, Bob Haggart (1914-1998) composed and arranged many tunes for the band and the most famous one is probably "The Big Noise". Bob recorded this tune for the first time in 1938 as a feature for bass, drums and whistling together with drummer Ray Bauduc. In our Climax Jazz Band we have had this tune in our repertoire for many years. Chris Daniels, our bassist introduced it to the band in the early seventies and it has been requested almost on every concert we have played. It was of course always a welcome break for our frontline musicians who could then walk off the stage for a smoke or a little nutrition especially when the drum extravaganza would happen. The Worlds Greatest Jazz Band came to play a week of dual concerts with our Climax Band in 1977 in Toronto and I remember co-leader Bob Haggart standing there with a surprised and puzzled look on his face when Chris did his version of the Big Noise. Here Chris is performing the tune at the 1991 Indianapolis Jazz Festival with our young drummer. Jamie Aug was now with the band for a little over 3 years and I think he was only about 19 years old. Barrelhouse Jazzband: Where Am I-Flat Foot Floogie-Shimmy Vienna 1969: Heinz Feix (b), Peter Hoffmann (p), Otti Kitzler (t), Horstl Bichler (dr), Alfons Wuerzl (cl), Norbert Vas (tb). This is a Tribute to our daddy Otti Kitzler (1942-1978). This recording was found in the ORF archives some years ago. A friend did this for us, Otti Kitzler´s children, otherwise nobody ever would have seen this tape again. I have made available some flyers and photos on http://musicanthropology.blogspot.com , too. As much as I know, this is the only video left, recorded in the 20th century sixties by the ORF Austria. The BHJB has a website here http://www.barrelhouse-jazzband.at , they gig each 23rd of December in Jazzland Vienna. The BHJB was formed around 1960, whose founders, my daddy and his friends, were only eighteen years old. I edited the tracks, cut it and added the graphics. NYPD Jazz Band - "Theme from Shaft" @ SJ Jazz Festival 2008 New York Police Jazz Band performs "Theme from Shaft" at San Jose Jazz Festival on Saturday, August 9, 2008. Issac Hayes, singer-songwriter for this iconic motion picture soundtrack theme song, passed away the next day- Sunday, August 10, 2008 at his home in Memphis, Tennessee. This video was shot with a little Panasonic-Leica DMC-TZ3 still camera. Unlike my previous camera - the Panasonic-Leica DMC-TZ1, I wasn't able to use the zoom while I was shooting video, thus it's shakier than usual. Rest in peace, Isaac Hayes. You will not be forgotten. Sugar Blues -- High Society Jazz Band 1960 Sugar Blues -- High Society Jazz Band 1960 The Sugar blues was recorded by Clarence Williams, obviously he played it many times in the late twenties with vocals by his wife Eva Taylor. . Many years later, Billy Poole, virtually unknown, recorded this tune again with the High Society Jazz Band from France. It is just amazing how Billie and the band stylewise flow together. A total listening pleasure for the lover of early classic jazz. The musicians in the band are leader and trombonist Mowli Jospin with Pierre Merlin trumpet, Claude Rabinet trumpet, Pierre Atlan clarinet., Martine Morel piano, Christian Gervais banjo, Raymond Fonseque tuba and Michel Miroux drums. This is a band that was formed in 1947 and specialized in the very early styles of jazz of the years 1900-1930. They stlll exist today now under the leadership of trombonist Daniel Barda (since 1968) See their new album at http://www.jazzbymail.com/ViewArtist....
