L'UOMO DAGLI OCCHI DI GHIACCIO - di Peppino De Luca e I Marc 4 UN UOMO DALLA PELLE DURA - di Carlo Pes The two films have several common elements: both wink to the US market, the plots focus on the research of truth about murders charged to innocent people and in the soundtracks there is the presence of the Marc 4. On "L'uomo dagli occhi di ghiaccio", the Marc 4 were credited as music authors together with Peppino De Luca, while in "Un Uomo dalla pelle dura" the only credited music author is the composer Carlo Pes who, with any chance, relied on his usual work companions, or rather the other three components of the Marc 4, title that isn't other than the acrostic of the founder members' names: Maurizio (Majorana), Antonello (Vannucchi), Roberto (Podio) and Carlo (Pes). The Marc 4, usually famous for a wide bunch of library music, is a trade mark frequently associated within film music productions. During their long career as musicians for RAI Orchestra, thanks to their remarkable technical ability, Marc 4 became performers of many movie themes composed by Ennio Morricone, Nino Rota, Gianni Ferrio, Piero Piccioni, Piero Umiliani, Alessandro Alessandroni, without forgetting a long and intense cooperation with Armando Trovaioli. Furthermore each one had important confirmations as session man and, about that, it hasn't to forget the presence of Podio and Majorana in the famous "Second Roman New Orleans Jazz Band", whose trombonist Peppino De Luca was a component since 1956. Maybe just inside this, one of the most important Italian band, we can imagine the first meeting between De Luca and Marc 4, who grew their unique jazz verve for creating the theme and the variation of "L'uomo dagli occhi di ghiaccio", soundtrack that can be proud of other prestigious presences as the sweet voice of Edda Dell'Orso and the unmistakable flute of Gino Marinacci, one of the best Italian jazz man that had the main credit, together with few others, of managing to give a more European connotation to jazz music. Comparing these two soundtracks we can realize that the "fil rouge" between musicians that worked on them, become more long and issued on and on we inquire into each of them. This is the mirror of what happened in our music panorama between the 60's and the 70's. In a period of great artistic heat, the most good and talented musicians, joined by a strong passion for jazz and by a great disposition to experimentation, didn't miss to give life to constant and significant artistic changes, composing musical works proud of a renewed attention and an accurate rediscovering.
