Tenderly - jazz piano solo Tenderly is a beautiful tune that usually demands thick, lush chords. It's melodic structure and chord voicings give the piece a style and sound that is very much 'of the period' when it was composed in the early 1940's. I tried to inject a little bit of a modern sound in this performance by editing out many of the lush chords and making them a little bit more open and ambiguous. I also tried to use a more angular approach and more silence in the phrasing to play off the lyrical way this piece is usually interpreted. For me it's a trade off. This approach takes away from some of the beauty of the piece, but also adds something a little bit different. Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson do amazing versions of this tune. George Shearing has a great version on his My Ship albulm as well. Tags: Tenderly Art Tatum Oscar Peterson jazz piano solo 7notemode Raleigh Durham North Carolina |

Lush Life - jazz piano solo This wonderful Billy Strayhorn tune is usually played in a slow, melancholy way with an emphasis on the chromatic structure of the melody and chord changes. I wanted to do a more energetic version and focus on the syncopation of this piece as much or more than the chromatic structure. Chick Corea did an up tempo verson on his Expressions CD. I used his version as inspiration, but I didn't copy any of his licks in order to keep it original. I think it is an extra challenge to do something different with classic tunes that are so well known, but this was fun to record. Harlem Nocturne - Jazz Piano visit my webpage - http://www.joolsscott.co.uk "Harlem Nocturne" 1940. Music by Earle Hagen. Hagen wrote "Harlem Nocturne" for a radio series as a conscious imitation of the Duke Ellington sound. Randy Brooks, a white big band leader, picked it up as his theme song in 1941. About ten years later, saxophonist Herbie Fields, released it as a single, soon after, virtually every sax player in the R & B business had his own version of it out. You can download my most recent 10 track piano album for $4 at http://payloadz.com/go/sip?id=467446 Sax-heavy honky-tonk R & B was beginning to fade at the time, but the smooth, sultry sound of "Harlem Nocturne" made it a good transition into the more sophisticated jump bands. Johnny Otis, a white vibe player who considered himself "black in soul" covered it for one of his early hits on Savoy. (Otis was later to keep the spirit of R & B going for many years with his various bands and LA radio shows). Finally, in 1959, a New Jersey band, the Viscounts, had a minor hit with it, introducing an eerie guitar effect that's been retained in most of the subsequent covers. Autumn - Jazz Piano Inprovisation Thanks to the participation of our friend of Youtube "shastasheene" which has made this wonderful video autumn. Tune by the Great Maestro "Dave Grusin" the improvisation and some changes naturally made by me:) Doing good attention by the first chorus, it seems that Grusin composition would have faced "My Funny Valentine" but seen from another angle, or rather it seems that "My Funny Valentine" has inspired the arrangement However, I hope you enjoy. FOR STEREO SOUND GO HERE : http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.fullscreen&videoid=43118313 David Grusin (born June 26, 1934) is an Academy Award-winning American composer, arranger and pianist. Grusin has composed many scores for feature films and television, and he has won numerous awards for his soundtrack work. Although he has worked in many musical styles, Grusin is often thought of as a jazz artist. Born in Littleton, Colorado, an alumnus of the University of Colorado, Boulder, College of Music who was awarded his bachelor's degree in 1956, Grusin has a filmography of about 100 titles. His many awards include an Oscar for best original score for The Milagro Beanfield War, as well as Oscar nominations for The Champ, The Fabulous Baker Boys, The Firm, Havana, Heaven Can Wait, and On Golden Pond. He also received a best original song nomination for "It Might Be You" from the film Tootsie. Six of the fourteen cuts on the soundtrack from The Graduate are his. Other film scores he has composed include Where Were You When the Lights Went Out?, Three Days of the Condor, The Goonies, Tequila Sunrise, Hope Floats, Random Hearts, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and The Firm. For television, he was the conductor for The Andy Williams Show (19631965) and the composer of the theme songs for such series as Dan August (1970), The Sandy Duncan Show (1971-1972) Maude (1972), Good Times (1974), Baretta (1975), and St. Elsewhere (1982). He also composed music for individual episodes of each of those shows. His other TV credits include It Takes a Thief, The Wild Wild West, and Columbo: Prescription: Murder (1968). He also did the theme song for One Life to Live (1968) from 19841992. About 35 Dave Grusin CD titles are currently available including soundtracks, originals, collections, and homages to jazz greats George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, and Henry Mancini. Grusin and Larry Rosen co-founded GRP Records in 1982. In 1994, GRP was in charge of MCA's (soon to be renamed Universal Music Group) jazz operations. Founders Grusin and Rosen left in 1995 and were replaced by Tommy LiPuma. In 1997, Grusin and Rosen co-founded N2K Encoded Music (after renamed N-Coded Music). He awarded honorary doctorates from Berklee College of Music in 1988 and University of Colorado, College of Music in 1989. Sunny - Bobby Hebb - Jazz Piano Cover- Funk Keyboard Boney M Here I am playing my own improvisational version (actually 2 versions) of the popular song "Sunny" originally written and recorded by African American singer songwriter Bobby Hebb in 1966. "Sunny" has been recorded by, among others, Pat Martino & John Scofield with Joey Defrancesco, Boney M, Cher, Georgie Fame, Johnny Rivers, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra with Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, the Electric Flag, The Four Seasons, the Four Tops, Wilson Pickett, Les McCann, Dusty Springfield, and The Alex Trio featuring David Wise. One cover, a disco version called "Sunny '76" was a hit for Hebb in that year. Bobby Hebb recorded "Sunny" in New York City, which resulted in a tour with The Beatles for Hebb. It is one of the most covered popular songs, with hundreds of versions released. This video was recorded March 2008 in Davis, California. At about 2:40 in the video you should notice a profound change in the rhythm and style of playing. I hope you enjoy it and thank you kindly for your positive comments. -Mark Chang Tags: acid jazz pianist music funk disco bebop improv virtuoso sunny bobby hebb acoustic cover solo piano Boney |
