BILLABONG PRO JEFFREYS BAY DAY 3 NEWS HIGHLIGHTS Surfing world number five JOEL PARKINSON (Coolangatta, AUS) has steamrolled into round four of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay in South Africa. In a day of long rides, shark sightings and high-end surfing, the Supertubes point break served up picture perfect 2m waves for the world tour surfing event. 25-year-old PARKINSON overcame a bout of serious food poisoning to demolish replacement surfer TRENT MUNRO (Scotts Head, AUS) in a one sided affair. Spotting a great white shark wasn't enough to throw powerful Aussie MICHAEL LOWE (Wollongong, NSW) off balance in round two, winning comfortably over compatriot PHILLIP MACDONALD (Cronulla, NSW). LOWE was leading the heat at the halfway mark when he caught sight of a huge shark in on oncoming wave. 2007 BILLBONG PRO JEFFREYS BAY FINAL HIGHLIGHTS West Australian surfing superstar TAJ BURROW (AUS, Yallingup) has trumped eight time world champion KELLY SLATER (USA, Florida) to win the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay in South Africa. In clean 1.5m waves, the 29-year-old defeated Jeffreys Bay favourite JOEL PARKINSON (AUS) and current world number one MICK FANNING en route to the ASP World Tour Final, setting up a clash of the titans against SLATER. Despite SLATER posting the highest heat total of the event in the Quarter Finals, It was all BURROW in the 40-minute clash, locking in an 8.50 on his second wave before sealing SLATERS fate with a radical 8.00 score in the final 10 minutes. Rare mistakes saw the Floridian surfing freak hand the Aussie BURROW his second win for the season. The final slate hat BURROW 16.50 to SLATER 6.17 out of 20.00 It was sweet victory for the fast surfing natural footer who finished runner up to FANNING at the Billabong Pro J-Bay in 2006. Matador - Garland Jeffreys. Studio Edit #1. I wrote the Matador song in Mexico, in December, 1978. Very influenced by the atmosphere, the lyrics seemed to roll right off my tongue with amazing ease. Anything sophisticated such as references to Goya, and Barcelona came along later. The basics were all there - I knew I had a special song but never would I think it would become such a great hit internationally (but for some strange reason, it was never released as a single in the U.S.) . For me, Matador continues my personal love and connection to "Spanish" type songs like "Spanish Town", and later "El Salvador", "Spanish Manners", "Spanish Blood" and in the future "Spanish Steps" perhaps. When I finally recorded this mysterious song, with Herb Alpert, Anton Fig, Alan Freedman, and a picture of Manet's Matador on my music stand, it flowed out perfectly. Di dit dit dit dit dit dit dit. "Don't Call Me Buckwheat" - Garland Jeffreys Don't Call Me Buckwheat from my "Don't Call Me Buckwheat" album released in 1992. It's time to bury the 'N' word along with all the other racial slurs. I was inspired to write this song after a very upsetting moment: I was at Shea Stadium watching the Mets vs. Houston, Dwight Gooden vs. Nolan Ryan. I was sitting in foul territory in left field. I got up to get a few franks and soda for the guys, walking and watching the game and going down the steps, all at the same time. I was probably blocking the view of people--and one guy says, "Hey, Buckwheat! Get the f--k out of here, Buckwheat!" I had never heard the word used before like that; I was shocked. I turned around and I was just frozen. I kept walking and I was on line and feeling really uncomfortable. I said, "Don't call me Buckwheat" to myself, and I went home and wrote the song. It just brought back my whole childhood, all the name calling. I grew up in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn in a very mixed-race community: Jews, Irish, Blacks, Italians and Spanish, K--s, M--ks, N-----s, W--s and sp--s. You heard those words a lot. I would cringe when I heard the "n------" word and I still do. The whole usage of it today in rap disturbs me to no end. Kids don't know the real meaning and how it feels to hear it.
