JOSTEDALSBREEN PAA LANGS Glacier expedition The classic Jostedalsbreen paa langs, a crossing of the largest glacier in northern Europe. It takes a minimum of 3 days to cross the plateau of ice from Stryn to Fjærland, well equipped to handle all kinds of weather. This trip was filmed in may - almost summer, but we experienced winter conditions on the ice. The glacier is situated in Sogn og Fjordane district in western Norway. Dovrefjell National park The National Parks in Norway include Rondane, Dovrefjell, Jotunheimen and Jostedalsbreen. Along with the fjords they add up to an enormous ecosystem with many varied ecotypes. The rhythm of winter and summer, water and snow keep changing the landscape. The glaciers provide the rivers and lakes with water. The rivers for their part cut the deep valleys. In this way a region developed which some people might find breathtaking, while others consider it to be bare and dull. For over 200 years, amateur and professional botanists used to come to Dovrefjell National Park from around the world to study and enjoy the unique, rich mountain flora. The area also boasts a practically intact mountain fauna with wild reindeer, wolverine, Arctic fox and golden eagles. Particularly unusual are the musk oxen that settled here after being introduced in 1932 and 1947-53. Previously, this was the natural habitat of this ancient species, but they died out in Europe during the last ice age. This 28 minutes documentary is part of the tv-series WONDERS of WILDERNESS and is available on DVD or VHS (Dutch or English version) at WWW.FAUNAFILM.NL The 12-part series colourfully introduces a dozen of the world's most important national parks with their rich flora, fauna and awe-inspiring geological wonders. Rondane National Park was Norway´s first National Park, established in 1962 and extended in 2002. The park is dominated by the high peaks, narrow ravines and deep valleys of the Rondane massif. The poor bedrock supports only a sparse vegetation of mainly lichen and heather. This is on no account dull. Neither is the ptarmigan, the reindeer or the elk. In this program we take a closer look.
