Palestinian Crisis - VOA Story Western nations are working quickly to support the new Palestinian government in the West Bank, following the violent takeover of the Gaza Strip by the Islamic militant group Hamas. The United States and European Union have announced they will resume financial aid to the Palestinian Authority, now that Hamas is no longer a part of the government. Middle East analysts say the current situation in the Palestinian territories is unprecedented. The bloody takeover of the Gaza Strip by Hamas has split the Palestinian government, with the Hamas leadership in Gaza headed by deposed Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and the new Fatah-allied cabinet in the West Bank sworn in by President Mahmoud Abbas. In announcing the resumption of direct aid to Mr. Abbas' government, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Hamas is attempting to divide the Palestinian people, a move the United States rejects. Analysts say the division between the West Bank and Gaza has endangered the Palestinians' goal of forming an independent state in the two territories, which are located on opposite sides of Israel. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas President Abbas seeks peace with Israel while Hamas, which has killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide bombings, wants to destroy the Jewish state. The United States, Israel and the European Union consider Hamas to be a terrorist organization. Robert Malley, the Director of the Middle East Program at the International Crisis Group, says the Hamas takeover of Gaza means the Palestinians have entered an extraordinary period of uncertainty. While western nations are restoring aid to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, and are pledging more money to help the United Nations fund assistance in the Gaza Strip, fears are being raised about a possible humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which is home to about 1.4 million Palestinians. Hamas began its rise to prominence in the late 1980s during the first Palestinian uprising against the Israeli occupation in the West Bank and Gaza. Following the Oslo peace accords in the early 1990s, the group's armed wing launched a campaign of suicide attacks against Israeli targets. Early last year Hamas won Palestinian parliamentary elections, defeating the Fatah-led government, which was seen as corrupt and ineffective. The group's popularity is partly due to its extensive network of social services, including schools, health clinics and mosques. Following Hamas' victory at the polls, western nations cutoff aid to the Hamas-led government, and Israel froze hundreds of millions of dollars in Palestinian tax revenues. Some analysts are expressing concern that a total boycott of Hamas could turn the Gaza Strip into a breeding ground for international terrorism. Analysts say the United States and Israel are backing President Abbas to send the message that more is to be gained by negotiations than by violence. The general outlines of a peace settlement between the Israelis and Palestinians have been known for years, although no significant progress has been made since the Oslo process collapsed. Analysts say achieving a two-state solution appears more difficult than ever, now that the Palestinians are virtually split into two separate states themselves. Cabinet Reshuffle in South Korea. ANCHOR: South Korean President Lee Myung-bak is facing a crisis. Policy blunders related to an unpopular U.S. beef import deal have soured public opinion towards his four-month-old government, forcing him replace key ministers. Here's more on the story... STORY: South Korean President Lee Myung-bak sacked three ministers on Monday in his first cabinet reshuffle, trying to restore support for his newly elected government. Lee replaced his agriculture, health and education ministers over policy blunders such as the U.S. beef deal, reached in April that helped drive public support for his government to below 20 percent. There had been speculation that Lee might also sack his foreign and finance ministers. [Lee Dong-kwan, South Korean Presidential Spokesman]: "President Lee Myung-bak appointed former president of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Ahn Byong-nam as the new Education Minister, Director of Administration of Korean Independent Commission Against Corruption Jang Tae-pyong as the new Agriculture Minister, and ruling party lawmaker Jeon Jae-hee as the new Health Minister." President Lee has seen nearly daily protest rallies starting in early May, sparked by a public concerned over mad cow disease, that later turned to a broader attack on his pro-business policies. As public protests intensified, his entire cabinet offered to resign en masse one month ago. On Saturday only about 50,000 people protested in Seoul against the beef deal and Lee's policies, compared to the half a million organisers had hoped for. This could well be a sign that public protests are abating. Tags: ntd south korea cabinet reshuffle Lee Myung-bak crisis U.S. beef import |

Japan s Aso Chooses His Cabinet CHAN: Japan's new prime minister, Taro Aso, was sworn into office yesterday. His biggest political move to date is the selection of his cabinet members, which he made public today. STORY: Taro Aso, an advocate of spending and tax cuts confronts an economy teetering on the brink of recession. He's speaking at a press conference to announce his new cabinet. [Taro Aso, Japan's Prime Minister]: "I am strongly aware of the people's anxiety about the economy and their livelihoods, and their mistrust of politics." Aso is likely to maintain ties with China on an even keel while strengthening relations with the United States. [Taro Aso, Japan's Prime Minister]: "The main diplomatic issues will be strengthening the Japan-US alliance, war against terror, and how to deal with North Korea." Upper house lawmaker Hirofumi Nakasone, a former education minister was appointed foreign minister. Aso appointed former trade minister and China critic Shoichi Nakagawa to hold two key portfolios - finance and financial services - while retaining Economics Minister Kaoru Yosano, a fiscal conservative who was runner-up in the race to be prime minister. Aso says balancing the budget is now much more difficult as the World's economy struggles. [Taro Aso, Japan's Prime Minister]: "I think many countries are suffering from a global financial crisis and the fact is that Japan is one of them, even though we might be only slightly wounded comparing to other countries." Some analysts said the cabinet was designed to put the spotlight on Aso as a strong leader, though the inclusion of right-leaning lawmakers couldworry overseas observers. Tags: ntd ntdtv news |

Obama Cabinet Choices Rife with Crooks, Retreads and Insiders Obamas Economic Foxes To Guard Financial Henhouse Newly announced team consists of the very people who created the crisis Steve Watson Infowars.net Monday, Nov 24, 2008 Today President elect Obama officially introduces his economic team to the world. What many may fail to recognize however is the fact that those tasked with rescuing the economy are the very people who helped create the financial crisis in the first instance. We already know that the team will include Tim Geithner as Treasury Secretary; Lawrence Summers as head of the National Economic Council; Peter Orszag as director of The Office of Management and Budget; and Jason Furman, Austan Goolsbee and Jack Lew in other senior economic positions. The man that ties almost all these people together is former Treasury Secretary and current Citigroup executive Robert Rubin. Rubin is as much to blame for the creation of the current financial crisis as Alan Greenspan is, as both men ignored the advice of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and strongly opposed the regulation of derivatives. Over-exposure to credit derivatives of mortgage-backed securities - or credit default swaps (CDS) was a key reason for the failure of Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, American International Group, and Washington Mutual in 2008. At Citi, Rubin was one of the grand strategists of the speculation in securitized loans, on November 4, 2007, he became the Chairman there. Rubin is also currently co-chairman of the board of directors of the Council on Foreign Relations and a member of the Group of Thirty. Every one of the afore mentioned economic experts to be appointed by Obama, with the exception of Skull and Bones representative Austan Goolsbee, is a protégé of Rubin. Furthermore, as the New York Times pointed out in a weekend feature: Even the headhunters for Mr. Obama have Rubin ties: Michael Froman, Mr. Rubins chief of staff in the Treasury Department who followed him to Citigroup, and James P. Rubin, Mr. Rubins son. All three advisers - whom Mr. Obama will officially name on Monday and Tuesday - have been followers of the economic formula that came to be called Rubinomics: balanced budgets, free trade and financial deregulation, a combination that was credited with fueling the prosperity of the 1990s. Today the government approved a radical plan to stabilize Citigroup in an arrangement in which will see the taxpayer assume the risk on $306 billion of Citigroups predatory loans, including billions in mortgage-related securities. In addition, the U.S. Treasury will invest $20 billion in Citigroup from the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), on top of the $25 billion that the government gave Citi in October. Critics have called it the worst and most undeserved bailout to date, pointing out that less than two months ago, the agencies tried to give Citigroup the whole of Wachovia, portraying Citi as a savior. The Financial Times chief business commentator writes: The downfall of Citigroup has taken place over a long time and involved many people, but attention is now focussing on the role of Robert Rubin, the former US Treasury Secretary, who is a Citi director and senior adviser and was briefly its chairman. Mr Rubin has had an influential role at Citi since being brought on board by Sandy Weill in 1999 but has not been an executive. Having formerly been co-chairman of Goldman Sachs, he preferred to exercise influence behind the scenes. () Now, of course, a big loss has been disclosed at Citi and various people are asking what Mr Rubin had to do with it. That was among the subjects covered in a long article in The New York Times on Saturday. It found that Mr Rubin and Chuck Prince, Citis former chairman and chief executive, played pivotal roles in the banks disastrous push into underwriting and trading collateralised debt obligations. The man in charge of this effort was Tommy Maheras, the former head of capital markets at Citi, who lost his job a year ago, shortly before Mr Prince resigned. Mr Rubin was then influential in selecting Vikram Pandit to succeed Mr Prince As a New York magazines headline states Robert Rubin Helped Break Citigroup and Now He Must Fix It. This seems a little awkward. Were giving the guys that broke the system the contract for the reconstruction project? the article concludes. Perhaps an even bigger concern lies in the fact that Rubin does not even acknowledge his own role in the crisis. As Matthew R. Lee of Inner City Press has noted, Rubin has no regrets, does not acknowledge that he has damaged the economy and has stated that it was not under my aegis to reign in Citigroups predatory lending. The only change Obamas economic team represents is that the foxes are now guarding the hen house, rather than plundering it. Tags: Nigger Niggers OsamaIn2008 |
