Sa Kambas ng Lipunan - On the Canvas of Society On the Canvas of Society While you watch this video, allow me to share with you some words as a backdrop or background of this video. What follows is an excerpt from Joey Velasco's speech at the start of his Book Launching and First Solo Exhibit in Art Asia. His book is entitled "They Have Jesus: The Stories of the Children of Hapag" and was launched on Oct. 13, 2006. -excerpt starts- Jesus Christ never wrote a book. The only scene in the Gospel where we saw him write was on the sand. But what he wrote was blown by the wind. What was etched in our minds forever in history and in eternity was his preference for the outcasts and rejects. In the future, I will be like the sand that will be blown by the wind. I will remain an unknown artist and writer. I will soon be forgotten. May the things I wrote in which I commit myself, be etched forever. Countless books have been written in the past about the triumph of the human spirit and about great men who were larger than life. This simple book purports to share the stories of a handful of small lives whose voices are often unheard and whose tiny dreams are shattered before they can even take form. I just allowed them to speak for themselves even amidst the environment of cynicism. Their story does not seem much because it is so simple, but it is definitely deep because it speaks of and mirrors the ills of society. I have learned from them that immersion or "sawsaw suka" is not enough, just for the feel-good-effect. Presence is the name of the game. Presence is what we are called for. I do not aim to do a Mother Theresa here or to fire up a grand vision like that of the great Tony Meloto whose environmental and social reengineering of Gawad Kalinga is becoming global. I am aware that I am surely not a powerful force to advocate change that will prevent hunger and raise funds. I am not a wealthy person. I am just a painter. I cannot be a front liner of any movement. But I know I can make a difference. This is my personal healing and transformative journey through the children's pain, hope, faith, and liberation that can reach across generations and cultures. I wrote this book not out of conceit or in order to highlight the rare privilege of having painted with and from the heart. I am not sharing my strength as an artist or as a writer, but my weakness as a fellow journeyer, who witnessed these children drifting in the dark. Initially, I thought they were lost only to find out in the end that I was the one who was actually lost. It is not a testimony of how I pitied poor children. It is an acknowledgement of God's abounding compassion for me. I am writing this to share how the Lord Himself painted through me and continues to give His message of hope and unconditional love through my humble work. In doing this, I wish to commit myself more and to live up to what is yet to unfold in the pages of this book. -end of excerpt- This video contains just snippets of the book "They Have Jesus" based on his obra "Hapag ng Pag-asa" (Table of Hope). For more on "Hapag ng Pag-asa" and the kids in the painting, view the videos at these links: Bayani Summit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNLUnHbsL_Y Noche Buena with Hapag Kids http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fqrlN0yR4Y This video reminds me of the song, "Get Up and Live" which goes like this: Get up and live, stand up and walk Life is a gift from God You've only got one life, live it well Go to your brothers, help them all. Get up and live! Go to the poor, to the poor in your town Go to the poor, to the poor, my friend. Share their sorrows, let your pride down. Show them you care, try to understand. Get up and live ... Stand up and walk! Tags: Canvas of Society Kambas Hapag |

On the Canvass of Society (Sa Kambas ng Lipunan) part 1 of 2 Joey Velasco's Journey in Art and Life By Dexter R. Matilla Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 00:19:00 02/04/2008 MANILA, Philippines - His is a tale that's magnified by his altruistic deeds. But for Joey Velasco, the "heartist," as he describes himself, who once hosted a deadly mass in his kidneys, what he's doing is merely making use of what God has given him—the power to create and hasten changes in society for the better. On the Canvass of Society (Sa Kambas ng Lipunan) part 2 of 2 Velasco's now-famous "Hapag ng Pag-asa," a 48x96-inch oil on canvas, came to be because he wanted his children to count their blessings in the face of street urchins who don't have food and shelter. In his search for inspiration, Velasco found 12 children in poor districts around Metro Manila and Quezon City. After treating them to meals, Velasco took their pictures and retreated to his room to start working on the painting. The result is a depiction of the Last Supper, with Christ breaking bread with street children. Tags: chubiop canvass justice velasco lastsupper heartist |

Ratu Ratu (whose name means "queen") originally made her home near one of the borders of Way Kambas National Park, where she came into contact with local people who had built a village in the same area. Because of her dark coloration, villagers mistook Ratu for a large pig and tried to kill her, but luckily she ran away and escaped harm. A team of rangers, keepers and veterinarians was dispatched to find and protect Ratu, and to guide her safely to the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary where she could experience a natural habitat while remaining safe from humans. When she first arrived at the sanctuary, Ratu was still traumatized from the stress of her encounter with the local villagers and her trip back to the park. She did not eat well and exhibited difficulties walking on her left hind leg after all the running she had done. After several weeks though, Ratu was as good as new. She began consuming large amounts of vegetation on her own, her leg healed, and she walked normally again. Ratu is now a very healthy and well-adjusted rhino, although at only 1,180 pounds, she is the smallest rhino at the sanctuary. Tags: sumatran rhino international foundation indonesia conservation |

Rosa Beginning in late 2003, Rhino Protection Units working in Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park began receiving reports from local villagers that a young Sumatran rhino, Rosa, had frequently been observed walking along roads and browsing for vegetation in villages around the park boundaries. Most Sumatran rhinos are very shy and solitary, but this unique rhinoceros was comfortable living and feeding in close proximity to people. A special protection unit was permanently assigned to observe and protect her, as there were serious concerns that Rosa's habituation to humans could put her at risk. Eventually she was transferred to the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Way Kambas National Park where she could be better protected and possibly reproduce. Rosa adapted rapidly to her life at the sanctuary. Although she initially spent most of her time browsing for food inside the "boma" (her individual pasture and paddock), because she is so habituated to humans, Rosa now takes long walks in the forest with sanctuary staff. Canvas Of Hope An update to Joey Velasco's "Kambas Ng Lipunan" video which featured his "Hapag Ng Lipunan" painting and the kids in it. As of last December 2007, 4 of the kids and families are now GK beneficiaries. The video features Jomar (4th from the right back row in Hapag Ng Pag-asa) and how his whole life has changed with GK's intervention. Many of these street kids, when asked what they wanted to be when they grow up, would answer, a tricycle (motorized pedicab) driver. Jomar, featured in the video now wants to be an engineer, to help build, to pay-back or pay-forward those whom have helped him and his family. Yes there is hope - one family at a time, one community at a time, one country at a time. Lampung Ancient Chinese travel chronicles refer to a place in the most southerly part of Sumatra called "Lampung" or "Place of the southerly winds". Megalithic sculptures discovered in Kebontebu, Kenali, Pugung and Batubedil also help to date the province to Indonesia's greatest maritime empire, Sriwijaya. Strategically located looking towards Krakatau and Java across the Sunda Strait, Lampung has a long history of trade and is still an important gateway into Sumatra, particularly from Jakarta. The Province is generally flat with the highest mountains of Gunung pesagi, Tanggamas, Seminiung, Sekincau and Raya all being dormant volcanoes. Pundar Lampung, the Provincial capital, was formerly two separate towns, Tanjungkarang and the port of Teluk Betung, which after the infamous eruption of Krakatau were both completely covered in volcanic ash. In the course of development, however, these towns have merged together to become one single city. Being blessed with incredibly fertile soil, agriculture has naturally become the main industry of the province. Clove, coffee, cassava, cocoa and rice are preferred in the eastern sections of the regions. The area around Lake Ranu is primarily a tobacco growing area. The Way Kambas Nature Reserve in the west of the province is a perfect place to see Sumatran elephants being trained to work in thick tropical jungles as well as hundreds of species of exotic birds. Tigers still roam this land although they are rare. The largest flower in the world, Rafflesia, can be seen at the Bukit Barisan Selatan National park. Tags: lampung kbritokyo kbri embassy indonesia |
