Wicked DVD Laser Flashlight Burning Hack! SEE MY OTHER VIDEOS - I created this 650nm red burning laser from a 16x DVD burner along with an adjustable lens I purchased from AixiZ Lasers online. Make sure you use 1.2 volt RECHARGEABLE batteries because two fully charged 1.5 volt batteries will FRY the laser diode (don't ask me how I know this ;o) This thing is simply WICKED - I can point at low flying clouds at night or cast a dot on something as far as the eye can see. If you adjust the lens so the beam focus is 1-3 feet away (under 1 meter) you can easily pop dark colored balloons and even light matches on fire! THIS IS NOT A TOY - For detailed instructions go to Kipkay dot com and look for the "laser flashlight" video. It was originally posted by user "Kipkay" at metacafe dot com For all who keep asking - you MUST use a DVD burner (NOT a CD burner) for this project and also two normal Alkaline batteries will destroy the laser diode in seconds!!! RECHARGEABLE 1.2 volt batteries are actually a very stable source of power and are at most laser diodes power maximum. Just ensure proper heat disappation by using a good thermal grease (like arctic silver) when mounting the laser into the Axiz lens assembly. I used a professional "garage vice" to firmly press the diode into the lens and also used the small ring from a taken apart XACTO razor pen knife which perfectly fits and avoids damage to the pins on the diode.
