Shodai Pottery The history of this pottery tradition goes back to between the Nara and Heian era when there were nearly 100 potteries in Mt. Shodai area. At the end of the 16th century Kiyomasa Kato(the war lord who ruled Kumamoto area) brought potters over from old Korea. A combination of the original technique with the Korean style formed the unique style of Shodai Pottery. After the Meiji Restoration, the government abolished both promotion and the support of the pottery business. With this change and competing the increasing popularity of the pottery forms, Imari and Seto, Shodai Pottery ceased to exist. But, Mr. Chikashige and Mr. Jyojima were dedicated to the art. Their commitment was responsible for the popular return of the pottery form, which later became an official national craft work. The style of this pottery is heavy glaze with a white flowing decoration. Tags: Japan Pottery |

Mitsunari, Kanetsugu and Yukimura - Phenomenon My second video, again from Samurai Warriors 2, but this time a tribute to the Western generals, particularly Ishida Mitsunari, Naoe Kanetsugu and Sanada Yukimura. Also featured are Shima Sakon and Maeda Keiji. Most of the footage is from Samurai Warriors 2, although I've included some from Samurai Warriors 1 and Warriors Orochi, and even a guest appearance from Dynasty Warriors 4. I've worked very hard on this one, much harder than I did on Dragula. I hope you feel my hard work has payed off. Either way, please rate and comment. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: Toyotomi Hideyoshi was the second of the 'Three Unifiers' of Japan during the Sengoku period, and the first of those three to have all the land under his control, which he achieved following the Siege of Odawara in 1590. He was, however, unable to become Shogun due to his low birth. He tried to improve Japan in many ways during his rule, but was unable to secure a strong heir. He has originally designated his nephew, Toyotomi Hidetsugu, as his heir, but after the birth of his son Hideyori had exiled him. However, Hideyoshi died before Hideyori matured, and so control over Japan passed to the Council of Five Elders, consisting of Tokugawa Ieyasu, Maeda Toshiie, Uesugi Kagekatsu, Ukita Hideie and Mori Terumoto. Easily the most powerful and ambitious of these was Ieyasu. An uneasy peace reigned for two years but, following the death of Maeda Toshiie, Japan was swiftly split into two armed camps, with the Tokugawa in the east and other clans in the west. The Western army had the support of Ishida Mitsunari and the clan bureaucrats; however, this earned them the ire of Toyotomi generals such as Masanori Fukushima and Kato Kiyomasa, who sided with Ieyasu. Soon, under the pretense of protecting the infant Toyotomi Hideyori, the Western Coalition, under the command of Mitsunari, marched to meet Ieyasu's Eastern Army at Sekigahara. Although the Western Army's allies Uesugi Kagekatsu and Sanada Masayuki were successful against Ieyasu's forces at the Battles of Hasedo and Ueda respectively, the Western Army itself was defeated at the Battle of Sekigahara. Mitsunari was killed there, as were several others of the Alliance leaders. Ieyasu declared himself Shogun soon afterwards, although it would not be until the Osaka Campaign of 1615 that Hideyori would be killed and all resistance against the new Tokugawa Shogunate based in Edo was wiped out. Naoe Kanetsugu was a prominent retainer of the Uesugi; Sanada Yukimura was known as Sanada Nobushige historically and was the second son of Sanada Masayuki. He commanded the Toyotomi forces during the Osaka Campaign. STORYLINE: Note that this is based on the events as told in Samurai Warriors 2; they are not necessarily historically accurate. 1st Verse - Our three heroes meet at Siege of Odawara, and swear an oath of friendship and honour. 1st Chorus - The backgrounds of Yukimura, Kanetsugu and Mitsunari, in that order. 2nd Verse - Hideyoshi is assassinated, and the ambitious Ieyasu tries to seize power. In response, Mitsunari mobilises his own forces and enlists the aid of his friends, as well as us the talented Shima Sakon. 2nd Chorus - The Western and Eastern armies march to meet each other on various fronts. Refrain - Battle of Sekigahara. Climax of military fighting. 3rd Chorus - News of Mitsunari's defeat and death reach Kanetsugu and Yukimura... COMMENTARY: Coming soon... maybe. Seto-Ohashi bridge The Longest Combined Road and Rail Bridge in the World. The route via the Seto Ohashi Bridge was the first of the three routes linking Honshu and Shikoku opened to traffic. In an area studded with many islands, this route hops from one island to another across the Seto Inland Sea. Joining the city of Kurashiki in Okayama Prefecture on the Honshu side with Sakaide City in Kagawa Prefecture on the Shikoku side, the complete route was opened in 1988. Stretching across a total distance of 9.4 kilometers (5.8 miles) there are six bridge sections that span the gaps between islands that lie between the two cities, as well as four viaducts on the islands themselves. The whole route is a double-decker construction, with an expressway running above a railway. In terms of scale, it is the largest combined road and rail bridge system in the world. Among all, the 1100-meter (3,609-foot) central span of the 1,723-meter (5,653-foot) long Minami Bisan Seto Ohashi Bridge at the southernmost end is on its own the world's longest combined road and rail bridge. Construction began in October, 1978. A total of over 1 trillion yen (7,692 million dollars; $1=130yen) was spent on this huge project, and it took ten years to be completed in April 1988. At present only normal trains are accommodated, but for future integration into the national high-speed railway network, the railway section is also designed to accommodate Shinkansen "bullet" trains. Due consideration has been given to the forces of nature, and the structure can withstand winds of up to 65 meters per second (146.25 m.p.h.) and earthquakes of magnitude 8.5.
