But, women need to be concerned about weight because it can and does affect overall health. You take your weight and height and see where you fall on the BMI table for adults (see below). There is also a handy BMI calculator at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's web site (see resources at the end of this FAQ). Some general guidelines for losing weight safely are: • Eat fewer calories. The best formula for losing weight is to decrease the number of calories you get while increasing your physical activity every day. Depending on how active you are, you may need between 1,500 — 2,500 calories a day. A safe plan is to eat 300 to 500 fewer calories a day to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week. • Lose weight slowly. It is best to aim for losing 1/2 to 2 pounds a week. By improving eating and exercise habits, you will develop a healthier lifestyle. And, this will help you to control your weight over time. You will also lower your chances of getting heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. "Crash" diets may take off pounds faster, but can cause you to gain back even more pounds than you lost after you stop the diet. • Exercise. Get active for at least 30 minutes every day. You don't have to train for a marathon to be active! Brisk walking, gardening, riding a bicycle, tennis and dancing all count as exercise. You can also break up the 30 minutes into three 10-minute periods. To get even more active every day, you can do things like park farther away from the mall in the parking lot and take the stairs instead of the elevator. The idea is to use up more calories than you eat each day. This will keep the calories from being stored as fat in your body. • Eat less fat and sugar. This will help lower the number of calories you eat each day. Select foods whose labels say low, light or reduced to describe calories or fat, including milk products and cheese. Eat lean types of meat, poultry, and fish. Eat less sugar and fewer sweets (don't forget that soda and juice can have lots of sugar). Drink less or no alcohol. • Eat a wide variety of foods, including starches and dairy products. This helps your body to get the nutrients and vitamins it needs to be healthy. Include plenty of vegetables, fruits, grain products and whole grains each day. Don't skip dairy products — there are many good tasting low, no, and reduced fat milks, yogurts, cheeses, ice creams, and other products to choose from. Proper calcium intake is needed for all women to prevent bone loss. Starch is an important source of energy that all bodies need, even when a person is trying to lose weight. It is found in foods like potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, beans, and some vegetables. Foods high in starch can become high in fat and calories when you eat them in large amounts, or when they are made with rich sauces, oils, or other high-fat toppings like butter, sour cream, or mayonnaise. Stick to starchy foods that are high in fiber, like whole grains, beans, and peas. • Practice portion control. Eat smaller amounts of food at each meal. Let go of belonging to the "clean plate club." Don't feel like you have to eat everything on your plate, even when eating out. You can also try eating more small meals throughout the day, rather than three large meals. • Get support. It can be hard to start a weight loss program, particularly if you are out of shape and not used to exercising. Ask your family and friends for support. Try to find an exercise buddy. Make your activity fun and social — go on a walk or hike with a friend or learn a new sport like tennis or ice-skating. • Treat yourself (once in a while). When trying to lose weight, we all feel tempted to "cheat" by eating a favorite, rich food like cake or cookies. But, sometimes it can be helpful to eat a small amount of a favorite food. Secondly, I am not "special" and neither is the transformation. Thousands of people all over the world do this kind of thing all the time (myself included, 7 years ago). This transformation has more to do with the mind than the body. The body is merely a physical representation of your daily thoughts and actions. Anyway, a lot of people have commented on the "unbelievable" fat loss from my first picture in black shorts and my official Day 1 picture. Just to clear it up, if you watch the video closely you can clearly see that I state that the first picture is from July 2003. My "Day 1" picture is 3 and a half years later on November 8, 2006 as evidenced by the date on the newspaper (which you can see in the video clearly if you pause it.) The primary goal of taking pictures and blogging every day was not to make a video. The reason why I started this project was a way of holding myself accountable. 7 years ago I was in shape, then I lost the plot big-time. I then spent 6 years overweight and at times bordering on obese like in the picture from July 2003. Trust me, I have enough "before pictures" to fill a family album. This time I decided to try something different. Take a picture every day (except for a few rest days). Taking a picture every day motivated me to push through the pain barrier every workout because I knew I had to take a picture that evening. Now of course, once I finished the 12 weeks I was proud of my achievement and I did have a new-found confidence after 6 years of being out of shape. The reason I put this "time lapse compliation" video on YouTube was in the hope it could inspire some people out there who are overweight and want to change their life. This video does not promote anything, except for taking massive action on your dreams! I'm also gonna clear up some other "problems" people have with this video. "DAY 2 WEIGHT DROP IS FAKE!": A few people have said that the "weight drop" from Day 1 to Day 2 is also unbelievable. The simple explanation is that I started sucking in my gut from Day 2 onwards. I'm in my own house on Day 2 and my primary focus was just getting through each day. At that time I had no way of knowing if I'd even get the job done let alone worrying about what people perceptions on my "Day 2 gut" would be 12 months later. Something a lot of people don't know is that no-one knew my blog existed until Day 42. I deliberately kept it private in order to avoid "energy vampires" who would sap my confidence. "THE WHOLE THING IS FAKE" : This is the best one. Do the people who make these comments have any concept of what "real-time" means. As I write this I am now on Day 388 (December 1, 2007). They must think I live in some parallel universe where time doesn't exist the same for me as it does for you. Or maybe I have a secret time-machine that transports me back to the future every single day. Ok, seriously, check out my blog where you'll see on Day 1/28/56/84 I'm holding a newspaper with a close-up of the date. I'm also holding a newspaper on Day 91 when I started Mission 2 and Day 230/365. What more can I do? Each blog post (and YouTube video) is date stamped. For more proof go to my channel and check the YouTube upload dates on all my 22 videos. There is no way I can fake that, but more to the point is why bother faking it? Isn't it easier to do the real thing? "YOU TOOK STEROIDS!": Anonymous armchair critics seem to spend a lot of time labelling anyone who has lost weight or put on muscle as a steroid taker. Seroiusly, steroids for fat loss is ridiculous, only an uninformed person would make that claim. Here are the facts, I only added 1.7 kg of muscle throughout the 84 days. The change in my appearance is because my bodyfat dropped from 20.8% to 10.3%. These stats are consistent with eating clean and working out hard. It is not amazing, nor is it rocket science. But there are no "magic bullets", no supplements and no "secret workout routines" that will do the job for you.
