The music of Messiaen Classical music for your day. Up next is music from Messiaen. This piece in particular is part of Book 7 of a larger work (of seven books) containing music based on birds, their musical calls and voices. Other birds that are included in the different books are the Blue Rock Thrush, Golden Oriole, Woodlark, Buzzard and Tawny owl among others. The work in question is the Catalogue d'oiseaux or "Bird catalogue" which was composed between 1956-58. He had an interest in birdsongs and he notated a fair number of such from his travels into his works. Among 'serialist' composition techniques, Messiaen would also develop his own styles and ways to compose. Pictures included in video are of the piece in question: The Black Wheatear. Kyung Wha Chung plays Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time Kyung-Wha Chung plays the 8th Mov. of Messiaen quartet for the End of Time (for piano, violin, cello and clarinet). Recorded live in New York in 1984. Since Kyung-Wha Chung mainly recorded romantic and early 20th century works, people tend to think her of limited repertoires. Bur if one follows the documents of her concerts and recitals, one would find her performances fully range from Baroque to contemporary.
