Michiana Storms - August 04 2008 Severe storms, bringing lightning, winds and possible tornadoes, cut a wide swath of damage across Michiana late Monday. Shortly after 6 a.m., there remained 1,638 customers without power in hard-hit LaPorte County, with another 812 reported in St. Joseph County, according to the Indiana-Michigan Power Web site. The storm spawned damage and a possible tornado in Griffith in Lake County, though Indiana State Police at the Lowell post said that remained unconfirmed by the National Weather Service. Closer to Michiana, however, the NWS Web site reported a fatality in LaPorte County. One person was believed dead after a tree limb fell on a vehicle in the Michiana Shores area. But county authorities said further information was not yet available as a second round of severe weather moved into LaPorte and Starke counties shortly after 1:15 a.m. St. Joseph County dispatchers said there were two reports of funnel clouds at the height of Monday night's storms. One was reported near Lydick at Indiana 2 and Quince Road, and another was reported at Indiana 331 and Pierce Road. Authorities said crews were still trying to clear part of Indiana 4 near Walnut Road early Tuesday after a tree fell across the roadway. South Bend crews also reported a tree down across Marine Street and traffic lights out at Olive and Sample streets, as well as other locations with wires and limbs felled by the winds, while Mishawaka officials reported no storm-related problems. In Kosciusko County, 911 dispatchers said firefighters were battling a barn fire along County Road 500 South in the southern part of the county, south of Warsaw. That blaze was reported shortly after midnight and was believed to be weather-related, authorities said, with additional trees and power lines down across the county. Those storms continued east, leaving more than 2,900 Indiana-Michigan Power customers in the dark in Allen County. That number was at just over 1,500 by 5 a.m. Elsewhere, Marshall County authorities also reported lots of trees and power lines down. At one home along County Road 5B near LaPaz, county 911 dispatchers said a burning tree sparked by power lines was reported fallen onto a home, but the building itself did not have serious fire damage. It was in that area that stormchaser Ben Holcomb recorded wind gusts of 60 to 65 mph, he reported by telephone early Tuesday. Holcomb, who sends streaming video reports to the Severe Studios Web site, said he "got hit dead-on by the line" as the leading edge of the storms passed over Lakeville. He traveled down U.S. 6 and went east to Bremen, Holcomb said, before turning around because more serious damage reports were in LaPorte County. Holcomb headed over toward Michigan City and LaPorte, but found damage limited to downed trees and power lines before driving home to Lansing, he said. The brunt of the storm blew into the communities along Lake Michigan after hitting the Chicago area. An unconfirmed tornado was spotted in the western suburb of Elmhurst, and the tornado sirens went off across the city, the NWS reported, prompting delays and evacuations at the Cubs game at Wrigley Field. As the fierce winds and lightning moved into Indiana, the lakeshore communities were first to hear the tornado sirens go off and watch the power go out. Michigan City authorities said that traffic lights on two main roads, U.S. 12 and U.S. 35, remained out after midnight. There were numerous reports of trees down, but no serious injuries or accidents in the community. Tornado warnings were issued across at least 10 counties in northern Indiana and southwest Michigan, including Fulton and Elkhart counties. By 2:40 a.m. EDT, flash flood warnings were in effect for Lake, Porter and Jasper counties. Porter County authorities said "a lot" of roads were flooded in their region. Later flash flood warnings also were issued for Fulton, LaPorte, Pulaski and Starke counties until at least 8:30 a.m. Berrien and Elkhart authorities said they had no reports of significant problems, although the NWS reported trees down in St. Joseph, Mich. Fulton County 911 dispatchers said they'd received calls about power outages but no serious damage reports. Further to the southwest, two barns and two grain bins were reportedly leveled by a tornado near Boswell in Benton County, according to the NWS Web site. Michiana Tornado Outbreak October 24 Twenty Five tornadoes broke out in southern Lower Michigan, northern Indiana, and northwestern Ohio. The strongest tornado was an F3 that struck western Saint Joseph County, Indiana. The outbreak was caused by an extremely deep low pressure system that was detected as early as Saturday, October 20 moving in on the coast of California. The Storm Prediction Center was already predicting a chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday. The area forecast discussion started mentioning a "severe potential" on Tuesday, also mentioning "severe storms with large hail and damaging winds possible". On the morning of October 24, the SPC was on its highest alert after issuing a "high risk" for severe weather for Indiana, middle Kentucky, eastern Illinois, southern Michigan, and western Ohio. The surrounding area was in a slight risk. At 5:00 A.M., a severe weather outlook was issued highlighting the fact that the area was under a high risk as well as a possibility of tornadoes. By 11:30 A.M., the SPC issued a Public Severe Weather Outlook calling for "intense tornadoes" in the area. Fifteen minutes later, the SPC issued a tornado watch for northern Indiana, and northwestern Ohio. The watch was a PDS: A "particularly dangerous situation". At around 12:30 P.M., a line of storms began forming in central and eastern Illinois and moved east. At around 3:12 P.M., a tornado warning was issued for LaPorte County. It is believed that this is the tornado that killed a 50-year-old woman when her modular home was swept away near LaPorte. It was an F2 on the Fujita scale. At 3:15, another tornado watch was issued for southern Michigan. At 3:46, another tornado warning was issued for St. Joseph County, Indiana and southeastern Berrien County, Michigan and Cass County. A few minutes later, another tornado, perhaps the strongest of the outbreak -- an F3 -- touched down and did major damage to buildings in Crumstown, a highway near South Bend. The line moved into South Bend at exactly 4:05 P.M., producing 89 mph (140 km/h) winds at the airport. The tornado that hit Crumstown later hit Niles in Berrien County, then moved east-northeast into Cass County and dissipated in northwestern Saint Joseph County, Michigan. There were no deaths attributed to this tornado. Other weaker tornadoes touched down in Mishawaka and moved northeast into Elkhart County. In Elkhart County, one of two separate tornadoes hit a Toll Road Maintenance Building and the other briefly touched down in the Cobus Green Trailer Court to the south-doing some damage to a few trailers. Another tornado damaged a trailer and a house in Marshall County and moved east into Kosciusko County and dissipated in Noble County. This particular tornado was photographed by meteorologists as it came near their forecast office in North Webster. Prior to the photo being taken, the tornado hit a factory on the north side of Warsaw, IN. Later in the evening the severe storm produced straight line winds through the campus of Michigan State University downing many trees and damaging buildings. The National Weather Service estimates most of the downbursts through East Lansing were between 60-80mph, with one reaching 120mph. The supercell that passed through East Lansing also spawned 2 tornadoes in the Saginaw area. By 5:30 p.m., the severe weather moved out of Indiana and into Ohio where damage was not as bad. One tornado was reported in Ohio, an F3 that moved from Paulding County into Putnam County. By 7:30, all severe weather watches were discontinued. The next day, the extremely strong low pressure system produced a "freshwater fury" over Michigan. A high wind warning was issued by the National Weather Service for the extremely windy weather over the area.
