THE RIDE FOR RWANDA WWW.TRFR.ORG WWW.ProjectRwanda.org The Ride for Rwanda is a trans-continential bike ride taking place in the summer of 2008. Six riders will be taking a route from Anacortes, WA to New York, New York a 3,700 mile trip. The purpose of the ride is to raise awareness and funds for Project Rwanda. Watch some videos about Project Rwanda and what they do here. Project Rwanda is an organization "committed to furthering the economic development of Rwanda through initiatives based on the bicycle as a tool and symbol of hope." Project Rwanda is currently working toward this goal on four different levels. 1. Building Awareness for Rwanda - The country and its people, as a tourism and cycling destination, through the development of an eco-tourism industry: annually (September '06 was 1st event) conduct a multi-day event attended by Rwanda's, US and European riders to promote this concept. 2. Special Bike Designs - Project Rwanda is actively engaged in the design, development and consults with implementation of special use bicycles to address specific needs within the country. 3. Bike Distribution - Project Rwanda plans to establish bike distribution to needed organizations that do not have existing grants to purchase bikes. This program is under development and will involve a "hand up", not a "hand out" through a micro financing mechanism which subsidizes the cost of purchasing the bike and provides micro financing locally but requires repayment of a percentage of the bike cost over a period of time at low interest rates. It is envisioned that this micro financing mechanism, once established, will be rolled out to other African nations and non African developing nations. The need for special use bikes worldwide is estimated to be in the hundreds of millions; the bike is an affordable, practical, environmentally friendly solution to local transportation and hauling needs. 4. National Pride - Select, coach, train, equip and promote a Rwandan National Cycling Team with the goal of successful participation in International Cycling competition as a means of promoting this industry within Rwanda and providing increasing awareness and national pride for Rwanda internationally. Clubpenguin-Coins for Change (What happend) The Coins for Change campaign in December 2007 empowered the children who play Club Penguin to affect real change in the world. More than 2.5 million children donated in excess of 2 billion virtual coins they earned playing games on Club Penguin to support the environment, children's health or children in developing countries. Through their virtual donations, the kids directed how much of a $1 million cash donation went to three charitable organizations chosen to represent those areas. Adopt a Village More than 110 million children around the world are denied the basic right of a primary education. In an effort to help ensure access to education and a better future for children and families, Club Penguin sponsors Adopt a Village projects. Through Adopt a Village, Club Penguin members are helping build and equip schools, implement sustainable, clean water projects, provide health care and develop alternative income programs in countries such as Kenya, Ecuador and China. Micro-Financing Of the 1.3 billion people living in poverty around the world, 70% are women. Club Penguin is helping break the cycle of poverty by funding micro-financing loans for women throughout Ethiopia. These small loans help women start a business, lift their families out of poverty and send their children to school. Romania Almost 20 years after the fall of communism, many children and families in Romania live in deplorable conditions with limited access to education and basic health care. Thanks to families who purchase memberships on Club Penguin we're helping care for abandoned children at the Brasov Children's Hospital and working to renovate and improve conditions at a series of homes on a former, communist-run collective farm where 150 people live. The Women of Chiapas "The Women of Chiapas" is a documentary shot in HD format using the new Panasonic 200 DVCPROHD. We follow three indigenous women from the highlands into the village of Nachij, stepping deep into their lives and showing how with a small amount of credit they turn dire circumstance into a well of human empowerment that reaches far beyond any regional boundary. Using Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunas' microfinancing formula, a local micro credit organization finds clients who have been forgotten and would otherwise not be able to get a loan, and puts their trustand money in their hands. From an ancient Mayan culture, the women have learned to manage in the modern world by using the money from the loans to start their own businesses, which becomes the sustaining power of their families. The friendships and family relations within the social groups change and become stronger as women helping women not only saves the lives of their families, but entire villages. Produced and directed by Melissa Eidson, who taught English and Drama in high schools in Harlem and Brooklyn and then at Pratt Institute in New York City. She got into making independent films after working with Mexican and American filmmakers in Mexico, where she has lived with her daughter for the past 6 years. Eidson also had several films at Cannes recently, including El Barrio at the Short Film Corner of the market 2006 and she played the nurse in the movie "Battle in Heaven" in competition at the Official Selection of Cannes 2005. Most recently she scooped up the Best International Documentary Award for El Barrio at the LA portion of the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival (NYIIFVF) and the Founder's Choice Award for best feature documentary at NYIIFVF in New York City this past November. Malaria claims another African life every 30 seconds Every 30 seconds, malaria claims another African life. Mosquitoes in Tanzania carry the deadly malaria parasite. Expectant mothers are most vulnerable, especially at night while they sleep. Their best and most effective protection is a mosquito net. A contribution of $20 provides vouchers for five mosquito nets and covers half the full cost. Mothers pay the other half, which encourages local stores and kiosks to keep the nets in stock. Lives are saved and the local economy grows! Tags: MEDA Africa Nets Malaria Microfinancing |
