Thursday's crackdown was the third of its kind in recent months. No resistance was reported in the city considered a hub of smuggler networks bringing in weapons from Iran to Shiite extremists. Rafia Abdul-Jabbar, a follower of anti-US cleric Muqtada al-Sadr who also serves as acting deputy governor of Maysan province, was arrested at his office. Al-Sadr's aides complained that the arrest violated the spirit of agreements made in talks with the government. Now the two men work together bridging religious conflicts that have killed thousands. In recent decades, tens of thousands of Nigerians have been killed in communal clashes between Christians and Muslims. "We formed a militia to protect our people". states Pastor Wuye. "My hate for the Muslims then had no limits". The victims of his militia included Imam Ashafa's spiritual leader and two cousins. The Imam spent three years planning revenge. John McCain and his supporters love to rally behind the surge and its "effects" as a Republican success, and a reason to continue the occupation in Iraq. The troop surge has done little to nothing to quell the violence in Iraq, though. The reality is that this relative "calm" has largely been a result of ceasefires with various Sunni and Shia militias, particularly the Mahdi Army, and the divide & conquer tactics employed by the occupation on a municipal and national level. Neocon propaganda on their self-proclaimed "success", and its supporters, are in for a rude awakening as future events unfold in Iraq over the upcoming years, whether the USA decides to pull out or not.
