Is religion a museum piece? The video introduces St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art in Glasgow, which has been described as the first public museum of religion in the world. Do note, however, that the Museum of Religions at the University of Marburg, Germany was founded in 1927 by Rudolf Otto. It contains a considerable number of artefacts and iconographic materials drawn from religions across the world (information provided by Professor Michael Pye, University of Marburg). There is also the Lenin Museum of Religion and Atheism in Moscow, but that institution makes no attempt to present religion in either an objective or comparative fashion. Of course, no museum can be described as value-free; none are objective or exist outside their social, political and funding contexts. The St Mungo Museum was not a planned museum: the building was constructed as a visitor's centre for Glasgow Cathedral, with which it shares a site, but the Cathedral abandoned the project owing to financial difficulties. This left the city council with a functionless, half-completed building in an area of Glasgow visited by many tourists. Finally, it was decided to use the already existing resources in the Glasgow Museums' collections to open a specialist centre around the theme of religion. The Museum is divided into three parts: one houses a collection of religious art from various traditions, another is devoted to the human lifecycle as it is understood/celebrated across a range of religious traditions, and the third concentrates on the history of religion in Scotland. While you may initially see the museum depicted in the video as a tranquil, typical and uncontested example of public education, in reality it has been the centre of heated debate since it opened. Especially soon after its opening, the Museum has generated considerable controversy, ranging from complaints about perceived unequal treatment of traditions, to actual physical attacks on exhibits. Some members of particular traditions have complained about being included in a comparative display with other religions that they consider to be 'false', while other members of the same groups have felt that their traditions were under-represented in the displays. An interesting feature of each room is the bulletin boards, where visitors are actively encouraged to respond to the exhibits. The notes make it clear that religion and how it is represented is still capable of rousing passionate feelings in many. One offended visitor in 1993 wrote, 'St. Mungo's; where Satan is free to run rampant'. However, the majority of comments are positive. As the senior curator of Glasgow Museums explained, the St Mungo Museum set out to do something different, something contentious: If the aim was to communicate something of the meaning of the objects, we had to reverse the usual process in museums of draining them of their dangerous meanings to render them safely aesthetic, historical or anthropological. In the case of religion 'meaning' has an emotional and spiritual dimension that can be described much more powerfully by those who experience it than those who have simply studied it. (O'Neill, 1994, p.28) As a result of this approach, the Museum decided to interview 'ordinary' believers and incorporate their comments into the displays, rather than relying on the views of priests, religious professionals or scholars. The Museum wanted to portray the traditions sympathetically, yet retain the right to criticize: this has proved a difficult balance to achieve. For example, the owners of material that had once belonged to the missionary and explorer David Livingstone threatened to withdraw it unless the Museum altered the text of a caption that expressed the view that missionary work had damaged indigenous cultures. Others have shown offence at photographs of the face of a girl undergoing ritual circumcision; still others have physically attacked non-Christian artefacts, damaging an important bronze image of the Hindu god Shiva (Figure 3). Some cathedrals have signs reminding visitors that they are places of worship, not museums. In contrast, St Mungo's is a museum where, as with the Victoria and Albert example shown in Figure 1, some people interact with the exhibits in a devotional manner. The museum's stated goal, however, is a more neutral one (or is it?): 'to reflect the central importance of religion in human life' (Arthur, 1993, p.232). Raiders of the Lost Ark - Iraq July 2003 The destruction and looting of Iraq's National museum became a symbol of America's failure to protect the country it had occupied. But now the museum is slowly being restored and many pieces recovered. Images of the empty museum provoked outrage that looters could so easily walk off with Iraq's heritage from under the Americans' noses. It was reported that as many as 170,000 artefacts were stolen, a figure played down by American investigators. "We have found that was fortunately a gross and irresponsible exaggeration," explains Col Matthew Bogdonas. But many in the world community still maintain the Americans could have done more. "Are any of those people engaged in the fighting"' asks Col Matthew Bogdonas. "The Museum was a battleground." The Americans are running an amnesty programme, encouraging the return of looted relics and "little by little the wounds are healing." So far about 1,000 have been returned. Both Iraq's cultural heritage and America's hearts and minds campaign depend on it. Tags: Iraq Cultural Heritage Museums Looting War Terror Theft Baghdad Occupation |

源平討魔伝 Genpei Toumaden - NAMCO Museum Vol. 4 Promo Trailer 源平討魔伝 "Genpei Toumaden" [The Genji & The Heike Clans Defeat Demon Story] is an old NAMCO Beat/Slash-'em-Up Action Platformer in the Japanese Arcades from 1986 running on "NAMCO System 86" Arcade Software. The Game's story is an elaborated and exaggerated adaptation of 平家物語 "Heike Monogatari", or "The Tale of the Heike", which is a historical account of the struggle between two clans, the Minamoto and Taira clans in 12th Century medieval Japan in what became known as the "Genpei War". The game itself was technologically ahead of its time--both looking and sounding like an early SEGA Genesis game such as "Altered Beast". Storyline-wise, the game took a large twist on the historical account through role-reversal. Making 平景清 "Kagekiyo-no-Taira" (the main protagonist throughout the video) into the Hero, while 武蔵坊弁慶 "Saito Musashibo Benkei", 源義経 "Minamoto-no-Yoshitsune", and his older brother (as well as the game's final boss), 源頼朝 "Minamoto-no-Yoritomo". Bad guys are good, and good are bad. The promotional trailer gives a brief introduction of Kagekiyo. Dying from a series of arrows during the Battle of Dan-no-ura, Kagekiyo is ressurected from the Underworld by Emperor Enma and Old Lady Andaba and ordered to both avenge himself and save the world by slaying Yoritomo and liberating ancient Japan from his evil grasp. The footage itself has seen alot of "action". It was recorded with the cinematography abilities of an old "Godzilla" flick, and was later copied to "NAMCO Museum Vol. 4" as a special "Bonus, Alternate Game Introduction" by holding down L1+L2+R1+R2 when you boot the game up. The original 5 Namco Museums for PSX were the best ones in my opinion because they went into the most depth and gave you a virtual museum to walk around in. This copy however was recorded from a partially scratched Disc. I may remaster it later--I'm very lucky to own the original five games seeing as they are quite rare nowadays. The Blue Whale at the Natural History Museum, London Here is an account of our visit to the Natural History Museum, South Kensington, London. The music is "Frozen Star" by Kevin MacLeod www.incompetech.com. The following info is from Wikipedia ... Another iconic display is the parallel skeleton and model of a blue whale. The display of the skeleton, weighing 10 tons and some 25m long, was only made possible in 1934 with the building of the New Whale Hall (now the Large Mammals Hall), though it had been in storage for 42 years since its stranding on sandbanks at Wexford Bay. Discussion of the idea of a life-size model also began around this time, and work was undertaken within the Whale Hall itself. Since taking a cast of such a large animal was deemed prohibitively expensive, scale models were used to meticulously piece the structure together. During construction, workmen left a trapdoor within the whale's stomach, which they would use for surreptitious cigarette breaks. Before the door was closed and sealed forever, some coins and a telephone directory were placed inside - this soon growing to an urban myth that a time capsule was left inside. The work was completed - entirely within the hall and in full view of the public - in 1938. At the time it was the largest such model in the world, at 28.3m in length, though the construction details were later borrowed by several American museums, who scaled the plans further. The Darwin Centre is host to Archie, an 8 metre long giant squid taken alive in a fishing net near the Falkland Islands in 2004. The squid is not on general display, but stored in the large tank room in the basement of the Phase 1 building. On arrival at the museum, the specimen was immediately frozen while preparations commenced for its permanent storage. Since few complete and reasonably fresh examples of the species exist, 'wet storage' was chosen, leaving the squid undissected. A 9.45m acrylic tank was constructed (by the same team that provide tanks to Damian Hirst), and the body preserved using a mixture of formalin and saline solution. The museum holds the remains and bones of the River Thames Whale that lost its way on 20 January 2006 and swam into the Thames. Although primarily used for research purposes, and held at the museum's storage site at Wandsworth, the skeleton has been put on temporary public display. Tornado World Record at Mercedes-Benz Museum Stuttgart The Mercedes-Benz Museum is now officially home to the "strongest artificially generated tornado in the world". The attempted record was confirmed in the presence of Guinness Book of Records representative Olaf Kuchenbecker. The 34.4-metre-high artificial tornado serves to eliminate smoke from the museum in the event of a fire. "We are delighted that the Mercedes-Benz Museum is now also featured in the Guinness Book of Records," said Michael Bock, manager of Mercedes-Benz Museum GmbH. "By successfully achieving the world record as 'strongest artificially generated tornado in the world', the Mercedes-Benz Museum has once again underlined its outstanding position in the world of museums also in terms of architecture." The architecture of the Mercedes-Benz Museum placed particular demands on construction planners, architects and engineers with regard to smoke elimination. The provisions of the approving authority and fire protection regulations require all areas outside the fire level to be smoke-free in the event of smoke emission. However, due to the open-plan structure of the Mercedes-Benz Museum, the various exhibition areas are connected to each other without any fire zones via an interior courtyard and ramps. From the perspective of smoke elimination this presented a challenging task that could not be implemented through conventional fluid mechanics. It was necessary to take a new approach, and so a globally unique smoke elimination system was developed especially for the Mercedes-Benz Museum. In the event of fire, 144 outlets located along the core walls inject air into the interior courtyard of the Mercedes-Benz Museum. This generates an artificial tornado, and the smoke collected is then discharged into the outside air via a smoke elimination ventilator located in the upper part of the building. This procedure uses the principle of the tornado force, which has a devastating effect under natural conditions, to create a controlled life-saving form of fluid mechanics that opens up new architectural possibilities. The Mercedes-Benz Museum with its unique smoke elimination system was selected from among some 800 applications that are submitted each week to the Guinness Book of Records. With 110 million copies in circulation, the Guinness Book of Records has been one of the world's most successful reference works since the 1950s, and is now distributed in 20 languages and 100 countries. Since 2006, the German version of the Guinness Book of Records has been published by Bibliographisches Institut & F.A. Brockhaus AG. www.museum-mercedes-benz.com Tags: Tornado Mercedes-Benz Museum Stuttgart World Record |
