MUSSORGSKY: Pictures at an Exhibition (Ravel Orchestration) Promenade Pictures at an Exhibition (Russian: Картинки с выставки -- Воспоминание о Викторе Гартмане, Kartínki s výstavki -- Vospominániye o Víktore Gártmane, Pictures from an Exhibition -- a Remembrance of Viktor Hartmann) is a famous suite of ten piano pieces composed by Modest Mussorgsky in 1874. It is generally acknowledged to be Mussorgsky's greatest solo piano composition, and has become a showpiece for virtuoso pianists. It has also become known through various orchestrations and arrangements produced by other musicians and composers (see: Versions by other hands, below, for further discussion), with Ravel's arrangement being the most recorded and performed. The version by Maurice Ravel (also produced in 1922, to a commission by Serge Koussevitzky) is a virtuoso effort by a master colourist, and has proved the most popular in the concert hall and on record. Ravel does, however, omit the Promenade between "Samuel" Goldenberg und "Schmuÿle" and Limoges. Petipa's "The Cavalry Halt" - The Maly/Mussorgsky Ballet 1/4 Here is part 1/4 of a slightly abriged version of Marius Petipa's rarely seen 1896 demi-character ballet "Le Halte de cavalerie", performed in 1983 by the Maly/Mussorgsky Ballet of St. Petersburg. Part 3 of my upload includes the rarely performed "Cavalry Halt Pas de deux". Choreography - Marius Petipa, though it certainly contains Soviet-era revisions. Music - Johann Armsheimer Décor - Gennady Sotnikov Costumes - Tatiana Ratner Cast - Theresa - Svetlana Vasilyeva Marie - Tanya Borushina Pierre - Andrei Yevdokimov Colonel of Hussars - Vladimir Dolgallo Captain of Hussars - Grigory Zamyal Cornet of Lancers- Valery Pechersky Contrary to popular belief, demi-character ballets such as this were Petipa's most common output. His ballets were always wonderful combinations of the character and classical canon, all of course used as a tool to ultimately tell the story. Petipa created "Le Halte de cavalerie" for Pierina Legnani (the world's first Prima Ballerina Assoluta) who performed the role of Theresa, and his daughter Marie Petipa (the first Lilac Fairy in "The Sleeping Beauty") who performed the character role of Marie. The original cast also included the great premier danseur noble Pavel Gerdt as Pierre and Alfred Bekefi (the first Councilor Drosselmeyer in "The Nutcracker") as the Captain. It is significant to note that the Sergeyev Collection, held in the Harvard University Library's Theatre Collection, contains Petipa's original choreography among the choreographic notation. --ENJOY!! This is the Samuel Goldernberg and Schmuyle movement. For this movement I was using a Bach Piccolo Trumpet (196 model) in A, with a Copper Bottom Jo Ral Mute. conductor Sven Libaek pauses after the movement for a between-movements bow and applause acknowledging the 1st trumpet in a somewhat surprising move. Performance was in Sutherland Shire Entertainment Centre, Sydney, Australia on December 17, 2006. A Night On Bare Mountain/Mussorgsky Rare and amazing! Rene Leibowitz conducts The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, 1963. Audio only. The idea of a work based on the fantasy of the Witches' Sabbath long fascinated Moussorgsky, and he wrote several versions of the work now known as 'A Night on Bare Mountain'. The first was for piano and orchestra, the second an orchestral setting. He reworked the material for chorus and orchestra and then reworked it again for inclusion in his unfinished opera, 'Sorotchinsk Fair'. After Moussorgsky's death, his friend and colleague Rimsky-Korsakoff felt none of these compositions would be effective in performance, so he wrote an 'orchestral fantasy' based on Moussorgsky's various versions. For this recording, Rene Leibowitz wrote a new version after extensive research of all the available Moussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakoff material. In a letter dated July 12, 1867, Moussorgsky spoke of the program that inspired him. "If I remember aright, witches used to assemble on that mountain, there to jabber and disport themselves pending Satan's arrival. When he appeared, they formed a circle around his throne and glorified him. When he felt sufficiently stimulated by their praise, he gave the signal for the Sabbath to begin...Well, that's how I've done the thing! (1) the assembling, the jabber and prank; (2) Satan's train; (3) the obscene glorification, and (4) the Sabbath." Rene Leibowitz (1913-1972) was born in Warsaw but moved to Paris in his teens and there began a long, illustrious conducting career. Particularly interested in contemporary music, he studied with Webern and Schoenberg and wrote a detailed analysis of twelve-tone music. A keen ear for instrumental coloration (Ravel was his orchestration teacher) was evident in his kaleidoscopic transcriptions of such works as Bach's 'Passacaglia and Fugue in C (for double orchestra!). But he is best known for his often highly personal renditions of many staples of the Classical and Romantic repertoire. If you liked Rene's sound on this, be sure to listen to the other side of the album, 'Pictures At An Exhibition' for an equally amazing performance.
