In more recent times, overloaded, immobile Soldiers have lost battles and wars and even when we win, it means heavy casualties. Prolific war analyst U.S. Army Brigadier General S.L.A. Marshall (SLAM) wrote to date the best book on the subject "The Soldier's Load & the Mobility of the Nation" which you can read online on the web page below: http://www.combatreform.com/combatlight.htm SLAM, whose experience ranged from WW1 to WW2, Korea and Vietnam--gets it--that the Soldier must never carry more than 1/3rd of his body weight but ASS U MEs that a huge nation-state logistical machine is going to swamp him with supplies along linear supply lines so men can care-free foot-slog. Deus Ex: Best Moment in Non-Linear Gaming Ok, before everyone spams me with rude messages declaring planescape (Or BG2, or KOTOR, ect...) to have better moments of severe non-linearity, let me explain: Deus Ex was a shooter, and much like System Shock before it, the game was deep enough to make people confuse it with RPGs. The moment you are watching here is one in which you are told to kill the leader of the rebel group you have been hired to eliminate. Throughout the game, you are given clues that reveal the true (insidious) nature of your employers. So, you might think...could I kill my superior officer and save the rebel leader without breaking the game? Amazingly, you can...and the game's storyline changes because of it. I know with Bioshock it has now become old hat...but I always thought Deus Ex was a game of epic proportions that was way ahead of its time. all useless hyperbole aside, this moment is what had sold me on the game when I first played it, and it really stands out as one of the best "non-linear" story moments in gaming.
