Frost over the World - Isabel Allende - 25 April 08 Isabel Allende is one of South America's greatest novelists Isabel Allende is one of South America's greatest novelists. Her books have been translated into more than 27 languages and have become bestsellers around the world. The author is the cousin of former Chilean President Salvador Allende and was forced to flee her country when Augusto Pinochet came to power in the 1970s. Allende now lives in the United States where she enjoys joint Chilean and US citizenship. Allende's latest book, The Sum of Our Days, reconstructs the painful days following the death of her daughter in 1992. The memoir is based on Allende's own journals and correspondence with her mother in Chile. Allende joins Sir David in the studio. She says she has never recovered from the death of her daughter. Allende talks about women in South American politics and reveals she has no more personal ambitions to fulfil. Tags: Frost over the World |

Sherman Alexie Speaks Poet-Novelist-Filmmaker (and personal favorite writer) Sherman Alexie was a featured guest at the Texas Book Festival in Austin, speaking at the Texas State Capitol and, as shown here, participating in a Young Adult novelists' panel at Alamo Drafthouse-Lamar on November 3, 2007. He reads a snippet from his new book "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" and then answers a few questions at the end. The panel included eight writers (i'll post clips of some of the others over time). At one point he appears to be flippant, but it's a false impression -- the questions were being randomly drawn from a fishbowl, and the questioner had no choice about who or what to ask (a perfectly odd format). In any case i thought Sherman handled it with great humor and poise, and made the situation evolve into a funny and astute answer. Also on the panel were Jacques Couvillon, Cynthia Leitich Smith, Adrienne Kress, Perry Moore, April Lurie, Neil Shusterman and Brian Yansky. The hosts were Barbara Chisholm and Rosalind Faires. Check out Sherman's site at http://www.fallsapart.com/ Note that the new book he reads from here has just been nominated for a National Book Award! UPDATE: Alexie WON the National Book Award for this book. Congrats Sherman! Many, many thanks to Sherman for posting a link to this video on the homepage of his website. Esokapi! Alexie is also the writer and director of three acclaimed films -- Smoke Signals (the first film made and produced by an all Native American cast and crew), The Business of Fancydancing (a highly underrated and overlooked film in my opinion) and 49. Web Exclusive - Barbara Kingsolver When it comes to best-selling novelists, Barbara Kingsolver is right up there. Perhaps you're one of the millions who's read The Bean Trees? Written 20 years ago, the book became so popular, it's still in print. And who hasn't heard of The Poisonwood Bible? Shortlisted for the Pulitzer, that one also earned a spot on Oprah's coveted Book Club list. If that ain't enough, Barbara in 2000 earned the National Humanities Medal, the United States' highest honour for service to the arts. Well, Barbara's still writing, and she's out with a new book. Only this one isn't fiction. It's called "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life," and it's the real-life story of how she and her family spent a year living off the land. Sort of like the 100-Mile Diet, but more intense. Instead of just buying their food locally, Barbara's family made and raised most of what they ate. And ran into some pretty interesting situations along the way. Tags: Barbara Kingsolver The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos Author |
