Bush in Albania 2007 - Cheering in Fushe Kruja 10th June 2007 A historic date for all Albanians President Bush is given a hero's welcome in Albania. This is the first visit ever of a serving president of USA to visit Albania and will be remembered long time, even though it only lasted eight hours. Albania is the only country where no one has seen any protests against USA or the President. Some even say the Albanians are the most proamerican people on the planet. This is not a hoax. This is a real deal and there is a reason for it. Why Albanians love Americans? Simply because americans are a freedom loving people and they showed this love in practice many times in the history of Albanians (and other small nations) by defending the Albania's right to exists as a state despite the appetite of many world powers and neighboring countries to carve and erase the country from the map. e.g. USA's President Wilson in 1919, at the Paris Peace Conference, was a crucial voice that saved Albania from being ceased as a state. Also in a more recent case, in 1999, it was USA and United Kingdom (leading) that saved kosovar albanians from being extinct by the killing machinery of Serbia. Therefore, the actions of the american people speak very loud about their just intentions towards small nations like Albanians. And remember, Kosovo had no oil worthy of such intervention in 1999! You americans should be proud of your soldiers who risk their own life to bring peace and stability to the world. They need your support! Albania as a state had its ups and downs in relations with USA, but after fall of communism in 1990 (something that America and Bush Senior again helped to get rid off), since then, Albania and albanians are back on track to drive forward a lasting relationship with the american people. We urge the american government to be more involved in Albania and Kosovo, to work closely with Albanians and deter potential involvements of radical islamists who may want to exploit new democracies like ours, by offering the very much needed financial incentives, but with a high price in return. We are aware of this, but we need your help! Albanians are a nation that will long remember your sincere attitude and support in our cause to freedom and democracy. Albanians stand united with Americans in the War on Terror! If you are told different, don't believe them! They are all ill wishers and they'll do anything to convince you otherwise! B Y L I S - A L B A N I A http://index.byllis-al.com/ Bylis (in today Mallakastra) which is a very important archeological center in Albania, is one of ancient Illyrian citys inhabited by the tribe of Bylliones. Established in the third century B.C., Bylis flourished as a political, economic, and cultural center of the community. The city was governed by an annual council of civil servants. In 230-146 B.C., it introduced bronze coins, which were used throughout this region. The handicrafts from the workshops of Bylis were competing with the handicrafts of Apollonia. The surrounding wall of Bylis, built in the second quarter of the fourth century B.C., is very well-preserved. It is 2250 m long, 3.5 m wide and 8-9 m high and it surrounds an area of 30 ha. The wall is triangular. The city consisted of several quarters and objects, such as the agora, which sheltered the inhabitants of the villages and their wealth in the event of war. It is very interesting to see: - The theatre, which is larger than that of Butrint and was built in the middle of the third century B.C. in the southeast corner of the agora. Visitors entering from the 4th entrance would immediately see the theater and the stadium. At the entrance of the theater there are two platforms, which used to display statues, one of which is thought to have been that of Dionysus. The steps of the theater are semicircle-shaped, with a diameter of 78 m. The theater had 40 steps accommodating an audience of 7,500 people which makes it the 3rd largest ancient theatre in Albania after Apollonia and Foinik. - the Stoa which originally was a 2 floor building, an open structure with pillars on one side, measuring 60 m x 11.4 m, is still partly preserved today. - The monumental fountain of the 3rd century. - Several stadium elements. - Medieval cultural objects such as Basilica (is 33 m long and 22.8 m wide)that manifest a significant continuity in the cultural field. Basilica it came by a Roman-era from around the year 400 which had some interesting floor mosaics. One of them shows left-facing swastika (indo-european in origin) surrounded by yin-yangs, (can be found in both Hindu and Buddhist tradition) and represents peace, and yinyangs are a symbol for a balance. In the Church of Bylis which was build on the IV-th century AD, the mosaics have Ilirian (Illyrian) motifs which for the church later where known as pagan ones. Inside, visitors can observe interesting mosaics, reflecting geometrical shapes, plants, and people. The same(exactly the same) symbols of Grapes, Snake, and blu Bird were used across the houses and places in Ilirian times till today. South of Basilica C is the college (high school), with a rectangular layout and a series of alcoves located in the inner yard. This structure was constructed in the third century B.C. The cathedral is a very interesting object, consisting of the basilica, the baptistery, and the diocese complex. It is one of the most important monuments of the ancient city of Bylis. This cathedral underwent several reconstructions in the fourth century A.D., in 470, and in 547. After every reconstruction, a new part was added to the monument. The basilica of the cathedral, which is 67 m long, has a much more affluent configuration than the other basilicas of Bylis. The walls of Cathedral were covered in several frescoes, but only those of geometrical shapes still remain intact. At the beginning of the fifth century, the Episcopate of Bylis and Apollonia was settled in Bylis. - The Justinian thermal baths are of rectangular shape measuring 24.5 m x 6.4 m. Built in the middle of the third century, the stadium represents a unique solution compared to stadiums in other ancient cities. Due to the terrain, only one side of it leans against the slant of the hill. This stadium has 19 steps with a height of 0.3 m and a width of 0.4 m each. The measurements indicate that the audience could only stand. Several cards bearing the inscription Bullis and a hole in the middle have been found in the southeastern part of this stadium during excavations. They are in fact tickets, which were tied with a rope and worn around the waist, considering that the attire of the time did not have pockets. .
