Escuchamos muchas quejas sobre la falta de un liderazgo fuerte, de que los políticos indaguen en lo que la gente quiere y lo hagan realidad, o al menos se acerquen bastante. Entonces la idea de lo que esta política dirigida por las encuestas crea es la impresión del que el sistema político puede tener todo tipo de problemas, pero en el fondo es responsable ante la opinión pública. Pero cuando empiezas a mirar a la opinión pública más detenidamente lo que descubres es que la idea de que la política está guiada por las encuestas es en realidad un mito. [0:52] Por ejemplo, hay un gran apoyo en los Estados Unidos a un amplio rango de políticas. Las encuestas muestras que la mayoría apoya el aumento de gasto en zonas pobres (60%), más gasto y regulación en medio ambiente (75%), más gasto en educación (75%), más gasto en sanidad (75%). También vemos que una mayoría aprueba un aumento en el salario mínimo (78%), estricto control sobre las armas (80%) y reformas en la financiación de las campañas (80%). En otras palabras, si la política realmente estuviera dirigida por las encuestas, entonces favorecerían todo un rango de medidas liberales o de izquierdas, pero de hecho no lo hacen.
