SARAH PALIN : What the job of MAYOR involves ! "I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom and signed up for the PTA. I love those hockey moms. You know, they say the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick. So I signed up for the PTA because I wanted to make my kids' public education even better. And when I ran for city council, I didn't need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and I knew their families, too. Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involved. I guess -- I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities." [ 03 SEPTEMBER 2008 ] ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- Sarah Palin accepted the Republican Party's nomination for vice president following a lengthy standing ovation as she took the stage at the Republican National Convention Wednesday. In her speech, she praised John McCain as a leader who "refused to break with those troops in Iraq who now have brought victory within sight. That is exactly the kind of man I want as commander-in-chief." Palin presented herself as both a mother and as an outside-the-Beltway reformer in the McCain mold, saying she "took on the old politics as usual in Juneau" and "stood up to the special interests, the lobbyists, big oil companies, and the good-ol' boys network." She tied oil -- a major industry in her home state of Alaska -- to foreign policy and national security on a night when convention delegates repeatedly burst into chants of "Drill now, baby, drill now!" "Here's a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion -- I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country." She assailed Democratic candidate Barack Obama as two-faced, saying "in small towns, we don't quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren't listening," a reference to a remark Obama made in a closed-door meeting that was taped and put on the Internet. "We tend to prefer candidates who don't talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco," she added. She took up the Republican dismissal of Obama as simply a celebrity, asking what substance lay behind his speeches. "When the cloud of rhetoric has passed, when the roar of the crowd fades away, when the stadium lights go out, and those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot -- what exactly is our opponent's plan?" she demanded. Delegates responded by chanting "Zero!" a reference to the amount of executive experience Republicans say Obama has. Attacking community organizers = Republican race-baiting The Republicans had expected that their orchestrated attack on Barack Obama's community organizing efforts in Chicago would link the Democratic candidate in Americans' minds with inner cities, the poor, racial minorities, troublemakers and radicals. At the same time, they wanted to demean -- and portray as strange and exotic -- Obama's decision to work on behalf of American working families facing tough times, a choice at odds with the GOP portrayal of Obama as part of an elite insensitive to the concerns of most voters. At the St. Paul confab on September 3, former New York Gov. George Pataki had sneered, "[Obama] was a community organizer. What in God's name is a community organizer? I don't even know if that's a job." Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani's mocked, "He worked as a community organizer. What? Maybe this is the first problem on the résumé." In her speech accepting the VP nomination, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said, "I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that the you have actual responsibilities." The following Sunday (September 14), on "Meet the Press,"..Giuliani, utilizing what used to be called "red-baiting" tactics in the McCarthy era, then tried to link Obama to what he called "a very core Saul Alinsky kind of almost socialist notion that [government] should be used for redistribution of wealth." The group that recruited Obama , the Developing Communities Project on Chicago's south side, was not affiliated with the Alinsky-founded Industrial Areas Foundation, but with the Gamaliel Foundation, a network of church-based groups. Within hours after the GOP convention, Obama released a statement and a fund-raising appeal, challenging the Republicans who "mocked, dismissed, and actually laughed out loud at Americans who engage in community service and organizing." His campaign manager David Plouffe sent another fundraising e-mail, saying, "Let's clarify something for them right now. Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies." Following the GOP convention, contributions to the Obama campaign spiraled. Obama often refers to the valuable lessons he learned working "in the streets" of Chicago. "I've won some good fights and I've also lost some fights," he said in a speech during the primary season, "because good intentions are not enough, when not fortified with political will and political power." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/peter-dreier/palin-attacks-on-communit_b_129568.html John Raskin, who said: "Community organizing is kind of the antidote to big money lobbying. It's the way that ordinary people come together to hold the government accountable to what they actually need. So the job of an organizer, someone like me or what Barack Obama was doing twenty years ago and other folks do around the country, is bring people together. You know, you knock on doors, you go to churches, you go to synagogues, you go to mosques, you have meetings. But people come together around what they need in the community." Raskin referred the audience to a website for Community Organizers of America. On it, there is a good defense of the work. "Regular people, working together, are the lifeblood of American democracy. Community organizing is how we keep that democracy strong, vital and accountable to its people." During the Bush presidency, the executive branch has operated under the theory of the unitary executive, which allows for the president to be a tyrant. Now, this election year, Barack Obama's formative work experience was as a community organizer. That is, instead of making decisions from the top like a CEO with executive experience and not knowing how most people live, he worked with people to help better their communities. As he said on September 7 on ABC's This Week: "Understand what I--what I did as a community organizer. When I got out of college as a young person, twenty-four, twenty-five years old, I had moved to Chicago and worked with churches, who were dealing with steel plants that had closed in their neighborhoods, to set up job training programs for the unemployed and after-school programs for youth and to try to deal with asbestos in homes of poor people. Community service work, which John McCain has been talking about putting country first and extolling the virtues of national service, that's what I did between the ages of twenty-four and twenty-seven, before I went to law school. I would think that's what we want all our young people to do." This experience is probably the best reason to vote for Barack. That and his eloquent opposition to invading Iraq, and his experience as a professor of constitutional law, and, well, 6.6 billion (current human population of the world) other reasons. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/norman-macafee/community-organizing-expe_b_125636.html Tags: ACORN community organizer voter fraud Sarah Palin racist rally speech crowd john Mccain race card Barack Hussein Obama street thug real time debate with bill Maher interview Rachel Maddow show countdown Keith olbermann worst person rush Limbaugh Chris Matthews Rudy Giuliani fox news |

Obama Speech for ACORN Community Organizers New Video Footage!!! John McCain's campaign is using Barack Obama's ties to a controversial low-income advocacy group to escalate his criticism of the Democratic nominee's character and judgment. The McCain campaign released a Web video and rolled out surrogates Friday to question Obama's connection to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, which is the subject of at least 11 investigations. The group's Las Vegas office was raided Tuesday by state authorities investigating claims of voter fraud, and a federal judge on Thursday ordered Ohio's secretary of state to verify voter registrations -- partly out of concern that groups like ACORN were not eradicating fraudulent forms. "Given ACORN's recent efforts to engage in voter fraud and to disrupt our political system, Obama's affiliation with this group raises serious questions about his judgment and ability to lead this nation," the McCain campaign said in a lengthy memo. McCain's Web video highlighted Obama's past legal work for the group and the fact that they endorsed him for president. ACORN Rally - Obama Community Organizers John McCains campaign and the Republican Party have been asking a lot of questions about the voter registration drive being run by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (Acorn) and Barack Obamas ties to Bill Ayers, a founder of the 1960s violent protest group Weather Underground. In tonights debate, McCain sought to connect the dots: While you were on the board of the Woods Foundation, you and Mr. Ayers together, you sent $230,000 to Acorn, McCain said. As the debate was going on, the McCain campaign emailed to reporters a number of news articles and other background materials on Obamas relationship to both Acorn and Ayers, including a list of grants from the Woods Foundation, an education charity, to Acorn, which is best known as a community housing organization. The amounts, from 2000 to 2002, totaled $190,000, according to the campaign, which cited the Illinois Funding Service , a subscription Web site. The left-wing activist group, ACORN, is now under investigation for voter registration fraud in a number of battleground states. . . . We can't allow leftist groups like ACORN to steal this election. Why do Republicans hate community organizers? No longer able to remember his principles any better than he can distinguish between Sunnis and Shia, McCain stands revealed as a guy who can be easily rolled by anyone who sells him a plan for victory, whether in Iraq or in Michigan. A McCain victory on Election Day will usher in a Palin presidency, with McCain serving as a transitional front man, an even weaker Bush to her Cheney. The ambitious Palin and the ruthless forces she represents know it, too. You can almost see them smacking their lips in anticipation, whether theyre wearing lipstick or not. This was made clear in the most chilling passage of Palins acceptance speech. Aligning herself with a young farmer and a haberdasher from Missouri who followed an unlikely path to the vice presidency, she read a quote from an unidentified writer who, she claimed, had praised Truman: We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty and sincerity and dignity. Then Palin added a snide observation of her own: Such small-town Americans, she said, run our factories and fight our wars and are always proud of their country. As opposed to those lazy, shiftless, unproud Americans — she didnt have to name names — who are none of the above. There were several creepy subtexts at work here. The first was the choice of Truman. Most 20th-century vice presidents and presidents in both parties hailed from small towns, but she just happened to alight on a Democrat who ascended to the presidency when an ailing president died in office. Just as striking was the unnamed writer she quoted. He was identified by Thomas Frank in The Wall Street Journal as the now largely forgotten but once powerful right-wing Hearst columnist Westbrook Pegler. Palin, who lies with ease about her own record, misrepresented Peglers too. He decreed America was done for after Truman won a full term in 1948. For his part, Truman regarded the columnist as a guttersnipe, and with good reason. Pegler was a rabid Joe McCarthyite who loathed F.D.R. and Ike and tirelessly advanced the theory that American Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe (geese, he called them) were all likely Communists. Surely Palin knows no more about Pegler than she does about the Bush doctrine. But the people around her do, and they will be shaping a Palin presidency. That they would inject not just Peglers words but spirit into their candidates speech shows where theyre coming from. Rick Davis, the McCain campaign manager, said that the Palin-sparked convention created a whole new Republican Party, but what it actually did was exhume an old one from its crypt. The specifics have changed in our new century, but the vitriolic animus of right-wing populism preached by Pegler and McCarthy and revived by the 1990s culture wars remains the same. The game is always to pit the good, patriotic real Americans against those subversive, probably gay cosmopolitan urbanites (as the sometime cross-dresser Rudy Giuliani has it) who threaten to take away everything that small-town folk hold dear. The racial component to this brand of politics was undisguised in St. Paul. Americans saw a virtually all-white audience yuk it up when Giuliani ridiculed Barack Obamas only in America success as an affirmative-action fairy tale — and when he and Palin mocked Obamas history as a community organizer in Chicago. Neither party has had so few black delegates (1.5 percent) in the 40 years since the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies started keeping a record. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/14/opinion/14rich.html?_r=1&oref=slogin Tags: Barack Obama Sarah Palin lie john Mccain Joe Biden economy speech interview debate energy oil gas tax Iraq war president |
