Battle of Pasir Panjang Adnan led a 42-strong platoon from the Malay Regiment in the defense of Singapore against the Japanese invaders. The soldiers fought at the Battle of Pasir Panjang, at Pasir Panjang Ridge in the Bukit Chandu (Opium Hill) area on February 12-14, 1942. Although heavily outnumbered, Adnan refused to surrender and urged his men to fight until the end. They held off the Japanese for two days amid heavy enemy shelling and shortages of food and ammunition. Adnan was shot but carried on fighting. The battle went down in history for consisting the only recorded hand-to-hand combat between the allied forces and the japanese army during the battle for singapore. According to survivors who managed to escape the carnage after the battle was lost, the wounded Adnan was taken prisoner by Japanese soldiers, who tied him to a cherry tree and bayoneted him to death. The japanese forbids anyone from bringing down his body. His remains was never found even after the war. Because of his actions at Bukit Chandu, Adnan is currently considered by Malaysians and Singaporeans today as a hero. He is also credited as the soldier who caught the disguised Indian troops' marching error. When Singapore surrendered, the Japanese Kempeitai attempted but failed to find and murder Saidi's family in revenge of Bukit Chandu. Kent Ridge Park, close to the site of the battle now bears a plaque in commemoration of Lt Adnan Bin Saidi. A museum at Bukit Chandu stands in memory of the bravery of Malay Regiment soldiers. This regiment would later become the Royal Malay Regiment of the Royal Malaysian Army. The Malay Regiment showed what esprit de corps and discipline can achieve. Pasir Gudang International Kite Festival For the 13th consecutive year, kite lovers joined the rest of the people of Johor at the recent International Kite Festival that took place from 18 to 24 February 2008 at Bukit Layang-Layang, Taman Bandar. This grand festival was organised in cooperation of Johor Corporation, Pasir Gudang Local Enforcement and Johor Tourism Action Council alongside Johor Kite Association and Johor Arts, Heritage and Culture. Started back in 1995, the kite fest became an official part of the Johor calendar of events, looking at the feedback it received since it first started. It was since then declared as the world's largest yearly kite fest. This time around the colourful event saw participation from 25 countries, which sums up to 180 kite enthusiasts to make the event even more merrier. Among the countries are Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Jerman, China, and India. Participation also included ASEAN countries. For Chile, however this was their first participation. Themed 'Layang-Layang dan Langit Kita Bersatu' (The Kites and Sky are One with Us), it took of at about 3pm. Eagerly waited kite enthusiast coloured the light blue and calm sky with kites of many shapes and sizes. Among the interesting looking kites were limbs, diamond train kite, squid and a well prepared acrobatic kite performance. It was well syncronised and the team work was applaudable. The theme portrays the get together of people from all walks of life at this event that also shares cultural values among local and international participation. International Kite Fest was graced by Sultan of Johor, Duli Yang Maha Mulia Baginda Tuanku Sultan Iskandar and Chief Executive of Johor Corporation/President of Pasir Gudang Local Authority, Tan Sri Dato.
