Video Clip: Big Bucks, Big Pharma Documentary Visit http://secure.mef.tv/itemdesc.asp?ic=224-I-D for more information. Newly released by the Media Education Foundation, "Big Bucks, Big Pharma" pulls back the curtain on the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical industry to expose the insidious ways that illness is used, manipulated, and in some instances created, for capital gain. Focusing on the industry's marketing practices, media scholars and health professionals help viewers understand the ways in which direct-to-consumer (DTC) pharmaceutical advertising glamorizes and normalizes the use of prescription medication, and works in tandem with promotion to doctors. Combined, these industry practices shape how both patients and doctors understand and relate to disease and treatment. Ultimately, Big Bucks, Big Pharma challenges us to ask important questions about the consequences of relying on a for-profit industry for our health and well-being. Featuring interviews with Dr. Marcia Angell (Dept. of Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School; Former Editor New England Journal of Medicine), Dr. Bob Goodman (Columbia University Medical Center; Founder, No Free Lunch), Gene Carbona (Former Pharmaceutical Industry Insider and Current Executive Director of Sales, The Medical Letter), Katharine Greider (Journalist; Author, The Big Fix: How the Pharmaceutical Industry Rips Off American Consumers,), Dr. Elizabeth Preston (Dept. of Communication, Westfield State College), and Dr. Larry Sasich (Public Citizen Health Research Group). Pharma Not in Business of Health, Healing, Cures, Wellness Be My Friend - http://www.myspace.com/psychtruth Ex-Pharma Sales Reps Speaks Out - Pharma Not in Business of Health, Healing, Cures, Wellness. Gwen Olsen spent fifteen years as a pharmaceutical sales rep working for such healthcare giants as Johnson & Johnson, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Abbott Laboratories. She enjoyed a successful, fast-paced career until several conscious-altering experiences began awakening her to the dangers lurking in every American medicine cabinet. Her most poignant lessons, however, came as both victim and survivor of life-threatening adverse drug reactions. After leaving pharmaceutical sales in 2000, Gwen worked in the natural foods industry first as an Account Manager for Nature's Way, and then as a Regional Sales Manager for Gaia Herbs. She is currently a writer, speaker, and natural health consultant. The United States health care system is killing Americans at an alarming rate, even though we spend over fifteen percent of the Gross National Product (GNP) on health care. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, our health care outcomes ranked only fifteenth among twenty-five industrialized nations worldwide. Adverse effects from prescription drugs have become the third-leading killer of Americans. Only heart disease and cancer claim more lives. We trust our doctors to inform us and our government to protect us from medical malfeasance that may put profits ahead of consumer health and safety. But the fine line walked by the FDA between the interests of the pharmaceutical manufacturers and the American public has continually been crossed. The result is the unleashing of an unprecedented number of lethal drugs on the U.S. market! Gwen Olsen learned firsthand the danger that lurks in every American's medicine cabinet, working in the pharmaceutical industry. But her most poignant education would come as a victim and, ultimately, as a survivor. Big Pharma http://www.RobertBritt.com http://www.robertbritt.com/ViralMarketingwithYouTube.htm Prescription drug commercials on tv must be banned. The trend toward self-prescribed medication must end. The scene couldn't be prettier. A happy family at play in the park or a couple (always married in an ideal commercial world) gazing lovingly into each other's eyes. It's a subtle commercial taking you into a world you might only dream about. At the end, you will find that the happiness was facilitated by a product manufactured by the pharmaceutical industry. There may not even be any obvious connection to what the wonder pill does. "Is proploxycillifafinolite right for you? Only your doctor can determine that." You will be sure to bring it up to them at your next appointment. Are you at this point starting to self-prescribe medication that will make your world a better place without even knowing what it does? For that matter, does big pharma know what it does? Or even how it works? There is a quick blurb at the end of all those commercials to let you know a gruesome list of possible side effects that "occur only in the rarest of cases." Some side effects are totally unknown until years later, but why worry about that? The primary function is having a happy life isn't it? You don't even know what the intended purpose of the drug is, do you? The commercials for prescription drugs need to be illegal, same as cigarette ads. Are we to become a society that has no responsibility for anything that occurs in our lives? Nothing is your fault really. Take a drug to counter 'whatever ails you.' We already have warnings that coffee is hot, or cigarettes are bad for you, why should anyone acknowledge that they themselves need to be aware of things that are going on around them? Instead of eating a healthy diet and moderate exercise to help counter cholesterol and diabetes, just take a pill combination for the rest of your life. Talk about repeat business, maintenance drugs are the focus of the pharmaceutical industry; they make sure they make money day after day, year after year. Big pharma is not interested in cures or prevention; they want drugs that will sustain your life, as long as you take them on a regular basis. This is like feeding someone poison and then giving an antidote daily to keep the poison at bay. We are a society that has a war on drugs, yet that is only the illegal ones. Ones that are controlled by the huge healthcare network are pretty much out there for the public to abuse. Ask your doctor, if she doesn't toe the line, ask another doctor. You'll get one to prescribe most anything you desire. They want to keep your business, so they will prescribe what you ask for, as long as it doesn't have some interaction with your current meds. Or in some cases, even if it does. There are enough doctors without ethics that you can find one anywhere if you look hard enough. Or you can look online and find someone willing to write the prescription. So where does this bring us? People are prescribing medicines for themselves, so they can have that idyllic tv life they've seen on those commercials. It is a hoax and it needs to stop. Are you willing to step up to the plate? Will you write your representatives to have them take up the fight or to support bills to curtail this insanity? Anything I can do to help you succeed, I will. Pharma Insider Part I Off-label promotion under the radar Physicians can prescribe drugs off-label (for non-FDA-approved uses), but it is illegal for pharmaceutical companies to promote drugs off-label. Douglas Melnick, MD MPH, a former pharma insider, tells Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD how companies get around the bans. Medical science liaisons are company doctors and pharmacists that can legally answer questions about off-label use, so drug reps may coax questions about off-label uses from doctors, and then refer those questions to MSLs. Company representatives also manipulate compendia, which are compilations of drug uses - including off-label uses - that are used by insurers to determine what drugs to pay for. Dr. Melnick, a preventive medicine physician, is a consultant to PharmedOut.org, a publicly funded project to educate physicians about inappropriate pharmaceutical promotion. Dr. Fugh-Berman is the principal investigator of PharmedOut.org. Transcript of this video is available at http://www.pharmedout.org. PharmedOut is an independent project funded through the Attorney General Consumer and Prescriber Education grant program that educates physicians on how pharmaceutical companies influence prescribing. Big Bucks, Big Pharma Extra: Drug Costs and PR Visit http://secure.mef.tv/itemdesc.asp?ic=224-I-D for more information. A special extra to the film "Big Bucks, Big Pharma," this compilation shows how drug companies thwart attempts to rein in skyrocketing prescription drug costs through false claims that regulation will hinder the research and development of essential new drugs. These PR campaigns by the pharmaceutical industry aim to frighten the public, and divert us from realizing that high drug prices are more about feeding multi-billion dollar industry profits, and supporting massive advertising and lobbying efforts, than they are about securing the invention of effective new drugs.
