Spam, Phishing, and Online Scams: A View from the Network-Level Google Tech Talks June, 13 2008 ABSTRACT The Internet is overrun with spam: Recent estimates suggest that spam constitutes about 95% of all email traffic. Beyond simply being a nuisance, spam exhausts network resources and can also serve as a vector for other types of attacks, including phishing attacks and online scams. Conventional approaches to stopping these types of attacks typically rely on a combination of the reputation of a sender's IP address and the contents of the message. Unfortunately, these features are brittle. Spammers can easily change the IP addresses from which they send spam and the content that they use as the "cover medium" for the email message itself. In this talk, I will describe a new, complementary approach to stopping unwanted email traffic on the Internet: Rather than classifying spam based on either the content of the message or the identity of the sender, we classify email messages based on how the spam is being sent and the properties of the spamming infrastructure. I will first summarize the highlights of a 13-month study of the network-level behavior of spammers using data from a large spam trap. I will then describe a new approach to spammer classification called "behavioral blacklisting" and present a detailed study of network-level features that can be used to identify spammers. Often these features can classify a spammer on the first packet received from that sender, without even receiving the message. I will conclude by describing our plans to incorporate these algorithms into a next-generation sender reputation system, as well as our ongoing study of the online scam hosting infrastructure, whose properties may also ultimately prove useful for identifying unwanted traffic. This talk includes joint work with Anirudh Ramachandran, Nadeem Syed, Maria Konte, Santosh Vempala, Jaeyeon Jung, and Alex Gray. Speaker: Nick Feamster Nick Feamster is an assistant professor in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech. He received his Ph.D. in Computer science from MIT in 2005, and his S.B. and M.Eng. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT in 2000 and 2001, respectively. His research focuses on many aspects of computer networking and networked systems, including the design, measurement, and analysis of network routing protocols, network operations and security, and anonymous communication systems. His honors include a Sloan Research Fellowship, the NSF CAREER award, the IBM Faculty Fellowship, and award papers at SIGCOMM 2006 (network-level behavior of spammers), the NSDI 2005 conference (fault detection in router configuration), Usenix Security 2002 (circumventing web censorship using Infranet), and Usenix Security 2001 (web cookie analysis). Easy MySpace Phishing [edit]TO ANYONE WHO WATCHES THIS: You do not have to use just these files that I provided. Yes, I know it is very obvious that it is a phishing page. These specific phishing tools are hosted by blackbay, register www.blackbay.org they have a lot more phishers that are more up-to-date. including all of the myspace updates (so it actually looks like the new myspace page). ALSO, it doesn't have to be on hostsnake. Just Google other web hosting sites (since hostsnake is always down). You don't have to use all of this stuff, this is just an example of how to do it. There are better tools for this out there...[/edit] http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IZYGKZJH The link above is a download link that contains 3 of the files that you will need to do this. They are small files, so don't worry about how long it will take to download. go to www.hostsnake.com register/sign in go to "FILE MANAGER" You need to upload 3 files (which are included in the link at the top). 1 - Index.html 2 - password.txt 3 - post.php (using a fake account) Click the "index.html.html" and send it to someone, or post it somewhere. The only way to tell if someone actually signed in on it, go back to the File Manager page, and click refresh, then open "passwords.txt" and it will show exactly what they typed. Most people might not click on it, but you'd be surprised at how many passwords you can get from doing this. User Interfaces and Algorithms for Fighting Phishing Google Tech Talks January 4, 2007 ABSTRACT In this talk, I will discuss our research group's latest work in developing user interfaces and algorithms for anti-phishing. With respect to user interfaces, I will describe the effectiveness of various interventions we have been developing for training people not to fall for attacks. With respect to algorithms, I will describe PILFER, a machine learning approach for finding phishing attacks in email with 99.8% accuracy, as well as CANTINA, a content-based approach to detecting phishing web pages using the Google search engine itself. A comparative study shows that CANTINA can find ~95% of phishing web pages. Credits: Speaker:Jason Hong Tags: google entertainment user interfaces |

US Bank phishing attack exposed On March 28, 2007, spammers sent thousands of emails that appeared to come from US Bank. These emails were actually examples of "phishing," an attack designed to make you divulge sensitive information. This vlog entry shows what telltale signs prove the email is not from US Bank and is, in fact, malicious. DaveDaDon Phishing Tutorial Uploaded for BHF. Don't Message me, I didn't make this video and will not reply. Description Follows. Welcome to the great land of PHISHING Phishing is just the process of making a fake web login (in other words Identify Theft) For this tutorial (written by DaveDaDon) you will learn how to make a phisher for MySpace, as it has been requested by manyyyy fucking people and its getting annoying cuz its so damn easy. 1) Well first things first, you must go to the website you want to phish In this case, MySpace. 2) View The source of the webpage and copy it down 3) now that you have the source, you need somewhere to host it I am going to use my ripway account, just for example PS: the host must be PHP enabled (and i bet my ripway account will get deleted mad quickly after the release of this tutorial) 4) now that we have the index done (index = default homepage) We just need to change the action of the form to write to our log (which we will create now) then we need to create a php script that will write to the log and redirect the victim to myspace or w.e site you wish. 5) create the log. 6) now create the php script, its best that you study PHP beforehand (learn at www.tizag.com or www.w3schools.com) so you know whats going on I already created the PHP script for this. IDK how you gonna get it, but just study it... veryyyyy well Im now creating the PHP script Going to call it redirect.php This line right here will redirect the victim This line right here will open our log these lines right here will first get the POST variables (w.e the victim enters) This line makes a new line for each victim you get then closes it :D now onto the next step... again, study the code veryyy well and learn php cuz itll help (just learn the basics) 7) now onto the good part, what we all want. To edit the source we stole and edit the function so that it gives us passwords - Go to your source. Search for : "action=" We're looking for where the user will enter their email and password This part we are at is for a search form. Search again. OK lets search something else. Lets see what we need. Lets just search for "E-mail" in this case. AH HA, found it. Now we just need to change the [action] of the form. to go to our redirect.php and shazam 8) delete the action and rewrite "redirect.php" 9) open up your index. HMMMMM... now lets see if it went well. YAYYYYYYYYYY. MySpace, sorry but you've just been owned by DAVEDADON BITCHESS!!!!!!!!!!!!111!11!!1!! lol Now you see all this extra stuff? We can change it around to say stuff we want Or just delete it more some extra space. ************ OPTIONAL STEP **************** 10) well we couldnt get the whole thing out but hey, saves more space. Well tut is done now. PEACE OUT -DaveDaDon. Tags: Phishing hacking davedadon blackhatforums bhf |

Spyware/SmitFraud Infection and Phishing Attempt Video download from http://www.websense.com/videos/seclabs/wmf-movie.wmv showing a real-time infection of a spyware trojan on a computer caused by visting a website that hosts a spyware installer. This is just a demonstration of how dangerous spyware is if you don't have the right protection software installed. The computer was more than likely wiped and formatted after being at the mercy of this infection. If you can't see the video well, this is what it does: 1) The user who is controlling the computer types in a website address into Internet Explorer and hits enter. The file he downloads automatically opens up and starts opening up with Windows' Picture viewer - but the file he download wasn't a picture. 2) Immediately the file runs a batch command (the black screen) which is basically like an installer for the virus. Suddenly a whole load of new icons appear on the desktop. 3) An icon also appears in the system tray and the balloon tip says "Your computer is infected!". In fact, this is not a message from the Windows OS, but it is a fake message from the virus that asks the user to run a fake anti-virus software to "remove" it from your computer. In actual fact, the message is true, but what users don't realise is that the message itself is the virus. 4) Suddenly the desktop changes (you notice by now that the computer is running much slower due to the virus infecting the whole computer) to a picture the virus put on there. 5) A new icon appears on the desktop called WinHound and the program starts running (you can see the splash page with the picture of the leopard/tiger). 6) WinHound then "pretends" to scan the computer for viruses and it makes a lie about there being a different virus on the computer. It makes the user think that WinHound is an antivirus product by scanning the computer, but it actually isn't. 7) When the scan is complete a dialog appears (notice that it's called "Microsoft Internet Explorer" :D ) that tells the user there is a "fake" infection. 8) Another dialog is opened up which asks the user to visit a website where they can "pay" for a removal tool for the "fake" virus. In fact, the website is actually a phishing website which asks for credit card details. This makes the user think that they have to pay for a removal tool, but what they actually get is their money stolen. Just so you know, this is *not* my own video. I did not create it. I downloaded it from the link above. My own computer is perfectly fine, thank you! WATCH! MySpace Phishing Alert BEWARE!!!! MySpace Phishing Alert from Jerry! If a friend of yours, or ANYONE for that matter leaves a comment on your MySpace profile - Pictures of girls kissing, boob shot, girl dancing, etc.. please read further. Basically this is the latest scam to steal your MySpace login information. Here is how it works. 1). A MySpace friend leaves you a video comment (this person has usually been phished already) 2). When you click on the video, instead of the video playing like all embedded videos do, it goes to a COPYCAT MySpace Login page which prompts you to enter your MySpace username and password. This of course makes NO SENSE as you are already logged into your account. 3). Here is what happens if you enter your information. 4). The Phishers now have access to your MySpace account and they WILL NOW log into your account and leave the same comment for all your friends. 5). What happens next is pretty freakin' scary because the phishing becomes viral and in a matter of hours these con artists have access to millions of user accounts. 6). So why do they do this? Have you ever seen those bulletins or comments that advertise FREE RINGTONES, or make money from home etc. They use your account to spam all your friends with their offers. So here is what you do if you have received a video comment from a friend, that when you clicked on the video, asked you to enter your sensitive login information, do both of the following.. 1). REMOVE THE VIDEO IMMEDIATELY, because most people that visit your MySpace, whether they are logged in or not, will probably click on the video, due to the provocative nature of the video. SEX SELLS FOLKS and they guys are become pretty clever. 2) Change your PASSWORD ASAP 3) Send this video notice to all your friends and help spread the word. FIGHT BACK! They CANNOT WIN if you KILL them in their tracks. Peace http://JerryWipf.com Tags: myspace phishing alert from jerry wipf jpwipf con artists false advertisement username password stealing scam |
