France's Sarkozy's Popularity Dives CHAN: French President Nicolas Sarkozy's popularity rate is at its lowest since his election nine months ago. More than 50 percent of citizens disapprove of his actions. STORY: A monthly poll for weekly Le Point said support for Sarkozy had fallen 10 points to 39 percent in February. Another poll for daily Le Parisien and Tele television said it had fallen six points in a month to 42 percent. The surveys did not provide reasons for the fall, but previous polls have pinpointed his public romance with former model Carla Bruni and anger over the cost of living as causes. [Frederic Dabi, IPSOS Poll]: "It's a loss of coherence, there is a kind of gap between the presidential actions and what he had promised as a candidate. That explains the great disappointment and the criticisms towards the president. The criticism isn't so much about his private life, we carried out some polls when he divorced from Cecilia Sarkozy and when his relationship with Carla Bruni was made public, and we saw that the French were saying that this was a private affair which wasn't of anyone else's concern. What was disturbing and shocking was the display of this private life and it's about this gap between the display of his private life and the problems of the French people." The French are due to elect new mayors across France in March. Dabi predicted this unpopularity could cost the Right many town halls. [Frederic Dabi, IPSOS Poll]: "With the upcoming municipal elections, the Right is very likely to lose many towns, and that will not improve the president's ratings." The number of respondents who disapproved of Sarkozy rose 9 percentage points to 58 percent. [Jean-Patrick, Worker in Paris]: "I think the honeymoon period is over, now he has to embrace the difficult topics and that's why his popularity is going down." [Anais Soyez, Student]: "The Carla Bruni story didn't really help him, it's becoming too showbiz-like." In contrast, the approval rating of Prime Minister Francois Fillon, who has been relatively low-key in his public statements continued to improve. Bolivian Wines Gain Popularity CHAN: Bolivia boasts the highest vineyards in the world. A Bolivian wine maker is hoping this fact will help the country emerge from the shadow cast by the Argentine and Chilean wine making community. STORY: Standing at some seventeen hundred fifty feet above sea-level, the lush vineyards of Tarija's Central Valley tower above its competitors around the world. Wine makers in the region say the high altitude creates a sweeter and even healthier wine, packed with antioxidants and more intense flavors. The vineyard's wines are already exported to France, Spain and Switzerland. Director Sergio Navarro, of Bodegas y Vinedos de la Concepcion SA (BCVSA) company, is hoping to win over the world's wine aficionados by focusing on the unique nature of Bolivian wines. [Sergio Navarro, Director, BCVSA]: "There's a relationship with our land and the surrounding environment that is very interesting because everything has to be in balance so that equilibrium is transmitted to our wines and we can remain here four hundred more years producing quality and producing Bolivia's high altitude wines.” The Pinedo family made its first foray in to the international market in 1994. [Francisco Pinedo, Co-owner/ Founder, BCVSA]: "For me, wine is an art form, and so it's a question of tradition. To start with, I come from a wine family, as a large majority of my family members have worked in vineyards. I have children who are following in the footsteps of their grandparents.” [Sergio Navarro, Director, BCVSA]: "We're currently trying to identify what is our typical wine, not just a copy of a formula from other countries, but the best expression reflective of Bolivian lands.” There are only eight thousand hectares of land able to grow vines in Bolivia. Doris Day - Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be Will Be) Que Sera Sera (Whatever Will Be Will Be) (J. Livington, r. Evans) 1950's hit sung by Doris Day --BIOGRAPHY-- (Taken from Wikipedia.) Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff (born April 3, 1924)is an American singer, actress, and animal welfare advocate known as Doris Day. A vivacious blonde with a wholesome image, Day was one of the most prolific actresses of the 1950s and 1960s. Able to sing, dance, and play comedy and dramatic roles, she became one of the biggest box-office stars in Hollywood. She has almost 40 films to her credit and has recorded approximately 45 albums. ............................................... In Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much, she sang "Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)", which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. According to Jay Livingston (who wrote the song with Ray Evans), Day preferred another song used briefly in the film, "We'll Love Again", and skipped the recording for Que Sera, Sera. When the studio pushed her, she relented, but after recording the number in one take, she reportedly told a friend of Livingston's, "That's the last time you'll ever hear that song." The song was used again in her 1960 film, Please Don't Eat the Daisies and was reprised as a brief duet with Arthur Godfrey in The Glass Bottom Boat; it also became the theme song for her television show. This was her only film for Hitchcock and, as she admitted in her memoirs, she was initially concerned at his lack of direction. She finally asked if anything was wrong and Hitchcock said everything was fine; if she wasn't doing what he wanted he would have said something. After the critical and popular success of Teacher's Pet, Day's popularity at the box office seemed to wane and some critical attention focused on perceived elements of "blandness" in her on-screen persona, although in some foreign markets (Germany, Britain and the Commonwealth), she remained a top box office draw. A dynamic performance in The Pajama Game received warm critical notices, but box office returns were disappointing. In the case of The Tunnel of Love and It Happened to Jane, both the critical and popular response was uneven. As a result, during the period 1957 to 1959, she was no longer regarded a "Top Ten Box Office Draw" by U.S. film exhibitors. This development may have been linked to a marked decline in popularity of musical films during the late 1950s, as well as to some poor choices in material made by Melcher on his wife's behalf. In addition, Day's popularity as a recording artist was diminished due to the growing popular taste for rock and roll. "Que Sera, Sera," for instance, was never a No. 1 hit, being kept from the top by Elvis Presley's recording of "Hound Dog." Tags: Doris Day Qué Que Sera Será Whatever Will Be |
