Federal agents eventually tapped his phone calls and analyzed his bank records.No word yet on whether prosecutors plan to charge him with breaking any laws. Tornado Passes Over Camera Probe UPDATED INFO: In June of 2003 Tim Samaras made history by deploying a special probe in the path of an approaching tornado in Manchester, South Dakota. He was within only about 100 yards of the twister when he anchored the probe, called Hardened Insitu Tornado PRobe (HITPR), into the ground. It was a direct hit; the quarter-mile wide tornado passed right over it. The probe itself was rigged with seven cameras and caught the action from all angles. Even TOTO (Totable Tornado Observatory), which weighed 500 pounds, was blown to smithereens when chasers attempted to deploy it in the early 80s...the twister didn't even come close to it and it was STILL destroyed. The Dorothy contraption in the movie "Twister" was based on the same concept as TOTO: place it in the twister's path & cross your fingers; censors would be released into the funnel and record valuable data. TOTO sits in some museum, now. My summary is very basic. If you go to National Geographic's website and type in his name, you can read much more info about him and the probe. Credit: TIM SAMARAS. NASA - Huygens Probe Lands on Saturn's Moon, Titan This movie was built with data collected during the 147-minute plunge through Titan's thick orange-brown atmosphere to a soft sandy riverbed by the European Space Agency's Huygens Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer on Jan. 14, 2005. In 4 minutes and 40 seconds, the movie shows what the probe 'saw' within the few hours of the descent and the landing. On approach, Titan appeared as just a little disk in the sky among the stars, but after landing, the probe's camera resolved little grains of sand millions of times smaller than Titan. At first, the Huygens camera just saw fog over the distant surface. The fog started to clear only at about 60 kilometers (37 miles) altitude, making it possible to resolve surface features as large as 100 meters (328 feet). Only after landing could the probe's camera resolve the little grains of sand. The movie provides a glimpse of such a huge change of scale. The Huygens probe was delivered to Saturn's moon Titan by the Cassini spacecraft, which is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.
