There's word that the civil rights leader was overheard uttering some crude remarks.This time he reportedly used the N word during a break in a T-V interview where he was criticizing Barack Obama.This all happened back on July 6th during a taping of a "Fox and Friends."Fox is confirming the comment but isn't releasing a transcript.This comes almost a year to the day after the N-double-A-C-P held an elaborate funeral for the word, hoping to erase from the American lexicon.And Jackson himself has long called on the entertainment industry to stop using the word.Jackson is overseas now but issued this statement.He says - quote - "I am deeply saddened and distressed by the pain and sorrow that I have caused as a result of my hurtful words. JESSE JACKSON makes crude remarks about OBAMA on Fox News Jesse Jackson Caught Bad Mouthing Obama Jesse Jackson Apologizes to Barack Obama for Crude Remarks The remarks came during a discussion with a fellow guest on Fox News about Obama's habit of talking to black audiences about taking responsibility for their families, often focusing on the role of fathers. They were picked up by a microphone Jackson says he did not know was open. Jackson said the broader context of the conversation was that Obama came off as "speaking down to black people." He said "the moral message must be a broader message" that includes policies to fix structural problems in education and other areas. He described his own "sound bite" as "crude and hurtful" and said he immediately called the Obama campaign to apologize. He said he doesn't want the remark to be used to "thwart" their relationship. "I support him unequivocally," he said. The Obama campaign had no immediate comment on the incident. Privacy Debate: Marc Rotenberg opening remarks We are not only discussing the expectations of privacy going forward, but also the constitutional traditions of this nation. America has a strong history of protecting personal privacy, and as technology has advanced we have always chosen to update our laws to maintain those protections. The Supreme Court has supported these laws that protected rights. 9/11 challenged us not only to protect our nation, but also to protect what makes us free: the Constitution and the rule of law. The American public has largely rejected the additional surveillance programs instituted by the Bush administration in recent years. If the government needs information, it should go through the proper processes and get a warrant from a judge. The answer is not how to adjust the balance between privacy and security. We need to always maintain the rule of law, constitutional protections, and the need for an independent judiciary and an open and accountable government. If we're prepared to accept the proposition that we can lower our expectations of privacy after 9/11, then we're prepared to accept the proposition that we can diminish our constitutional form of democracy.
