Dean Radin Pt.1 Art Bell welcomed Dean Radin of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, who offered analysis of the Global Consciousness Project and discussed his new book Entangled Minds. The Project measures the movement or "ocean" of consciousness through changes in random number generators that are set up around the world, he explained. Eight years of data looking at 204 major world events has shown that a kind of "coherence" takes place associated with these incidents, in which the numbers become less random. The overall odds against chance of this occurring are roughly 300,000 to 1, Radin reported. Further, these types of results were mainly associated with populated areas, indicating that consciousness was the variable in the changes. "Our perceptions of reality are a construction-- we don't see the way the world actually is," and experiments have shown that slight changes to expectations cause people to see completely different things, he said. Radin also touched on the coming of quantum computing, a huge increase in power that would allow computers to go beyond just calculating 0's and 1's, and possibly surpass the human brain. [Al-Quran 41:53] Dr. Maurice Bucaille is an eminent French surgeon, scientist, scholar and author of ''THE BIBLE, THE QURAN AND SCIENCE'' which contains the result of his research into the Judeo-Christian Revelation and the Quran. It is a unique contribution in the field of religion and science. Being an outstanding Scientist, he was elected to treat the mummy of Merneptah (Pharaoh) which he did. During his visit to Saudi Arabia he was shown the verses of the Holy Quran in which Allah says that the dead body of the Pharaoh will be preserved as a ''Sign'' for posterity. An impartial scientist like Dr. Bucaille, who (being also a Christian) was converstant with the Biblical version of Pharaoh's story as being drowned in pursuit of Prophet Moses. He was pleasantly surprised to learn that unknown to the world till only of late, the Holy Quran made definite prediction about the preservation of the body of that same Pharaoh of Moses time. This led Dr. Bucaille to study the Holy Quran thoroughly after learning the Arabic language. The final conclusion of his comparative study of Quran and the Bible is that the statements about scientific phenomena in the Holy Quran are perfectly in conformity with the modern sciences whereas the Biblical narrations on the same subjects are scientifically entirely unacceptable. The present booklet, which is a lecture given by Dr. Bucaille on the subject Qur'an and Modern Science at the Commonwealth Institute London, will provide guidance towards the eternal of Islam. Some Statistical Problems in Spectroscopy and Hyperspectral Imaging Google Tech Talks July 23, 2008 ABSTRACT Every material has a distinctive spectrum. The spectrum of a material tells us about its chemistry. Hyperspectral images produce a spectrum (represented as several hundred numbers) at each pixel in an image. So hyperspectral images enable us to map variations in chemistry. The first hyperspectral scanners, built in the 1980's and 1990's, were designed for airborne applications, primarily for mineral, environmental and military applications. However, in recent years, hyperspectral microscopes and cameras have been developed and are being used for terrestrial applications in areas such as medical diagnosis, burns analysis and skin cancer, biosecurity, pharmaceuticals, forensics and in agribusiness. A significant issue in hyperspectral imaging is that the spectra at many pixels in an image are actually mixtures of the spectra of the pure ingredients. My main focus over a number of years has been on developing fast and sophisticated algorithms and software for "unmixing" these spectra into their pure ingredients, both when the pure ingredients are known and when they are unknown. This has resulted in two software packages: The Spectral Assistant (TSA), which has been incorporated into another CSIRO package, The Spectral Geologist, which itself has been sold to over 100 (mainly exploration and mining) companies around the world; and Iterated Constrained Endmembers (ICE), which has yet to be commercialized. I will give an overview of the algorithms underlying TSA and ICE, and demonstrate their application to some mineral, remotely sensing and biological data sets. Finally, I will discuss some unsolved statistical and computational problems associated with these packages. Speaker: Mark Berman Mark Berman received the B.Sc.(Hons.) degree and University Medal in mathematical statistics from the University of New South Wales in 1974, and the Master of Statistics degree from the same institution in 1976. In 1978, he was awarded the Ph.D. and D.I.C. degrees in mathematical statistics by the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. He was a visiting lecturer in the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley during 1978-1979. Most of his time since then has been with the CSIRO Division of Mathematical and Information Sciences (CMIS), Sydney, where he is now a Chief Research Scientist. He led CMIS' Image Analysis Group from 1989 to 2000. He spent 1988 at the Melbourne Research Laboratories of Broken Hill Proprietary Ltd. where he established the Image Processing and Data Analysis Group. His research interests are in image analysis (especially hyperspectral), spectroscopy and spatial data analysis. Since 2007, Dr. Berman has been working part time at CMIS. During this period, he has also given Ph.D courses in spectroscopy and hyperspectral image analysis at the Technical University of Denmark and Stanford University.
