A batalha de Kiergard não foi mais nobre, a de Frömsted não foi mais sangrenta. Eu estava lá. E vou contar para meus filhos. Naquela tarde o vento não soprou e a Lua ficou parada no meio do céu para olhar a grande luta. Os dois exércitos se enfrentaram sobre a grama verde do verão. Mas depois da batalha o verde tornara-se vermelho, tanto foi o sangue derramado pelos combatentes. Naquele tarde não anoiteceu, porque o Sol não quis se pôr para não perder nenhum lance da grande batalha. Eu estava lá, e vou contar para meus filhos. Os Homens Eu estava lá, e vou contar para meus filhos que, de todos os combatentes, o mais valoroso era o Homem-de-Cabelos-Vermelhos. Ninguém corria como ele, ninguém se esquivava dos golpes dos adversários como ele, ninguém matava como ele. E naquela tarde ele fez sua melhor luta. Naquela tarde, o Homem-de-Cabelos-Vermelhos, que já ídolo, quase virou Deus. Mas havia outros, havia muitos outros. Na retaguarda, como última esperança, como último homem a defender a bandeira, estava o Príncipe-de-Cabeça-Sem-Pelos, o filho do Rei. E no flanco esquerdo havia o Anão-Gigante, ágil como um coelho, esperto como uma raposa e traiçoeiro como um rato. Mas havia outros, havia muitos outros. Havia um com o nome de Galo, mas que merecia ser chamado de Tigre, outro a quem chamavam Pequeno-Carlos, mas que devia ser chamado Carlos-Gigante, e um de nome Passos, mas que dava saltos. E ainda havia Marcos, que tem o nome no plural porque aparece em vários lugares ao mesmo tempo. Eu vi todos estes homens, e vou contar para meus filhos. A Luta A missão destes homens era quase impossível. Eles tinham que derrubar três vezes a bandeira inimiga. Não uma nem duas, mas três. Parecia impossível, mas "impossível" era uma palavra que esses guerreiros não sabiam falar (principalmente Macedo, o gago). E já na primeira metade da luta a bandeira inimiga havia ido ao chão duas vezes. O Homem-de-Cabelo-Vermelho já havia feito parte do milagre. Houve então uma trégua. Os inimigos, vestidos de verde, se recolheram para descansar, beber água feito mulheres e orar por melhor sorte. Mas os homens de branco não. Os homens de branco ficaram no campo de batalha. Há quem diga que eles ficaram lambendo o sangue dos inimigos que havia caído pela grama, mas isso eu não vi. E o povo dos guerreiros de branco gritava e urrava. Então, na segunda metade do combate o milagre aconteceu por completo. Mesmo com menos homens, o exército de branco derrubou mais uma vez a bandeira inimiga. E outra, e mais uma. E no final da luta a bandeira dos homens-de-verde já havia caído cinco vezes. E quando a guerra acabou o povo de branco andava de joelhos, se abraçava e se beijava. Homens que não se conheciam cumprimentavam-se como irmãos e cantavam hinos de guerra. E os guerreiros foram para o meio do campo da batalha e deram-se as mãos. Então o Homem-de-Cabelo-Vermelho ficou no meio do círculo e levitou até a altura de um pinheiro. E seus cabelos pegaram fogo e só então, com inveja, o Sol se pôs.
