Black Button - Short Film -YouTube Awards 2007 - Top Six Finalist, Best Short Film -WINNER: Fitzroy Short Film Festival (Melb, Aus) -WINNER: DearCinemaFest Short Film Festival (Int.) and more... Mr Roberts finds himself awoken inexplicably in a white room. A man sits before him at a desk and in between them stands a black button. If Mr Roberts pushes it, he will receive a briefcase filled with millions of dollars. Or he can take the key to the door and leave penniless. The catch? Pushing the button will result in the death of a human being. What would you do? EDIT 1: Some people have observed a similarity in the premise of this film and an revival episode of The Twilight Zone in 1986. Please note (1) We had never seen the episode and only learned of it long after we'd finished the film. (2) The Twilight Zone weren't the first to do it. There was a short story before that, which was in turn based on an old premise called the 'Faustian Bargain', around since the 16th century (deal with the 'devil'). An almost identical premise exists in several cultures. Richard Kelly is even making a film with this premise called 'The Box'. (3) Our film is similar in premise, but different in plot, characters, dialogue, aesthetics, setting, moral meaning, religious undertone, twist etc. Each version, including ours, aims to bring something new to an old idea. Please have the respect to not accuse us of plagiarism. Additionally, we have no particular religious affiliation; this is a fictional work and its ideas are designed to encourage thought and debate, not comment on any particular theology. Our first professional short film. We made it for $200 and shot it on the stage of our old school in Melbourne, Australia. Fortunately, professional actor Robert Grubb agreed to act in it for free after reading the script. This film took nearly a year to put together, working on it in stages and creating the 'white' effect on a home PC. Please note that the younger actor, unlike his father Robert Grubb, has no formal acting training whatsoever. The Making of "Black Button" is now on YouTube. Sarajevo, Bosnia and Rome, Italy. How many different things can happen for only 10 Minutes. The film won the award for the best European short film in 2002. This short film, as its title indicates lasts only 10 minutes, but it tells a much longer story which unravels only in our imagination upon seeing the end of the film. While 10 minutes in someone's life mean nothing, they can be fatal in another: a boy and his loving family, tragedy in a war-torn city, death and destruction. All in just ten minutes. The film follows two simultaneous story lines: one set in Rome, and one in Sarajevo, in 1994, the worst time of the war in Bosnia. Although the Rome part was not filmed on the original location, that does not take away anything from the quality of the film, it was just a symbolic element anyway. Cast is great, story is very compact and well written, direction dynamic and precise. There is nothing out of place in the film: well structured, stripped of false pathos, realistic, it is very straight forward. In other words, this is a jewel of a film, and it was not by chance that it won the award for the best European short film in 2002. 10 minutes for me is definitely one of the most moving and powerful films about wartime Sarajevo. Behind the scene: I read that the director Ahmed Imamovic, in search of Japanese for the role of the tourist, had to go to the Japanese Embassy in Sarajevo and ask one of the staff to perform in the film. Luckily for the director, the Embassy allowed one of their employees to star in the film. The Legend of Boruta (Short Film) This is my films internet debut! Yay. SYNOPSIS The year is 1939; Nazi Germany has recently invaded Poland, and many small towns and villages have already become victims of the German raid. A regiment of Nazi soldiers arrive upon a small church nestled in the sprawling wheat fields surrounding the small town of Leczyca. As they enter the church grounds, a low-ranking soldier is ordered into the catacombs deep beneath the church to search for valuables and items of historical and cultural significance for appropriation. Reluctantly, the young soldier heads down, and discovers he has been tainted by the stolen goods, further building the Legend of Boruta. FILM DESCRIPTION A short film (approximately ten minutes in length) centered around Boruta - an archaic creature who guards treasures deep within the catacombs of Poland - as he is confronted by unwelcome visitors during the German occupation of Poland amidst World War II. "The Legend of Boruta" is an animated grad-film project by Bartek Nowakowski, completed in April 2007 at the Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design (Vancouver, BC). The concept of the film is derived from an old Polish legend that originates from the small town of Leczyca, Poland. The town - consequently, also Bartek's home town - though small, is saturated with old churches, cathedrals, art, architecture, stories and legends, all of which have inspired him to create his first film, The Legend of Boruta. .
