Naoji Kariya, 90, a sword maker from Kochi, Kochi Prefecture, and his wife, Sadai, 83, have requested the film's Chinese director, Li Ying, remove his scenes from the film. Since Kariya appears as a central character in the film, Li is concerned that removing his scenes would spoil the entire film and criticized the Diet member's questioning of Kariya as "intervention." "I had gained Kariya's approval. If I cut his scenes, the film will be undercut and cannot be screened," said Li during a press conference on Thursday. Kariya, however, told the Mainichi: "I was told that the film was a documentary about sword making. I cannot trust director Li Ying any more. I want my scenes deleted from the film." In the film, images of interviews with Kariya, who made swords for military personnel during World War II, appear throughout, along with images of people clad in military clothes who pay their respects before Yasukuni Shrine. According to Kariya, he received a request to appear in the film through an acquaintance around October 2005. After several months, Li and two other film crew workers visited his home and shot the scenes for two days. Around spring last year, a preview of the film was carried out at Kariya's home. When his wife said, "The content of the film is political and we cannot accept it," Li reportedly answered, "I will send you an edited edition shortly." However, the couple has reportedly not been contacted by the director since. "It's too late to say anything. I just want them to stop making a fuss," said Kariya. Meanwhile, Hiroko Arimura, a House of Councillors member of the LDP, has disclosed on her Web site that she contacted Kariya on March 25. "I had heard that Kariya was feeling annoyed (about the film). I contacted Kariya and his wife directly for the first time after thinking that I cannot raise questions in the Diet based on something I heard from other people," her Web site says. Li said during the press conference on Thursday, "It is regrettable that I was asked to delete his scenes as a result of a Diet member contacting him directly." Kariya, however, does not see Arimura's inquiries over the phone as interference. "I just received inquiries. I don't think I was pressured," he said. It's unknown if Li will delete the scenes. Personal Note - I find it completely unacceptable that Li is complaining about freedom of expression and political interference when he lied to the elderly swordmaker, telling him it was a movie about Swordmaking. He doesnt want to delete the scenes he aquired by lying to the old man because he would lose money. I find that particularly underhanded, sneaky and quite selfish. ##"I was told that the film was a documentary about sword making. I cannot trust director Li Ying any more. Japan: theaters cancel war shrine film By Chisaki Watanabe, Associated Press Writer TOKYO — Several Japanese movie theaters canceled showings of a documentary about a controversial war shrine after at least one theater received threats, a cinema official said Monday. Callers objected to "Yasukuni," a film by Chinese director Li Ying, because they considered it anti-Japanese, according to a spokesman for theater operator Humax Cinema. Manubu Matsumoto said Humax canceled showings at one theater after callers threatened the company. He refused to detail the threats. "I personally think the decision is regrettable. I don't think the movie is anti-Japanese," Matsumoto said. Five theaters have canceled screenings of the documentary, the Kyodo News agency reported. Some theaters are still scheduled to show the film in April, the report said. The documentary takes a critical look at Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine, which honors some 2.5 million Japanese war dead, including some war criminals who were executed. In recent years, Japanese leaders have enraged China and South Korea by going to the shrine. Critics say the visits show Japan has failed to fully atone for invasions and atrocities of World War II. Japan Shinto Shrine Gate Japanese Jinja Torii Tori Mon Those who have visited Shinto (native religion of Japan) shrines in Japan may recall passing beneath one or more large gates (mon) at the entrance to the shrine complex. These distinctive structures are called torii in Japanese and are thought to mark the boundary between the secular world and the sanctified grounds of the shrine. In passing beneath a torii one is, in fact, making his or her initial approach towards the inner sanctuary, and accordingly many Japanese will first bow before stepping under the gate. Shinto shrines may include multiple gates, and paths within the shrine may be lined with dozens of closely set torii which together create the effect of a long, enclosed corridor. Believers may use their walk through such passages as an aid in helping to clear their mind of worldly distractions and in preparation for making an appearance before the enshrined deity. Torii gates are traditionally made of wood though it is not uncommon to see gates made of metal, concrete, stone or other durable material. Many wooden torii are unpainted and over time will take on a beautiful weathered appearance much in keeping with the shrine's natural-looking landscape.  Torii are often produced using local timber and therefore shrines which are located in high mountain forests may feature torii constructed simply from a few rough cut conifers. Such torii blend in nicely with the surrounding forest and are emblematic of the Japanese love of nature. Though the torii has become a symbol of Japan as a country it is nevertheless a very unique and important part of the Shinto religious tradition.
