Supporting Scalable Online Statistical Processing Google Tech Talks April, 28 2008 ABSTRACT Christopher Jermaine - RESEARCH SCIENTIST Query processing for analytic, statistical, and exploratory database queries has been an active area of database research and development for nearly two decades. Many experts now consider this problem to be "solved", especially with regard to performance. However, an argument can be made that users and databases have simply reached an uneasy truce with regard to analytic processing. If users avoid ad-hoc, exploratory queries that might take days to execute, then of course the database performs just fine. In this talk, I will describe query processing in a database system called DBO that is designed from the ground up to support interactive analytic processing. DBO can run database queries from start to finish and produce exact answers in a scalable fashion. However, unlike any existing research or production system, DBO is able to produce statistically meaningful approximate answers at all times throughout query execution. These answers are continuously updated from start to finish, even for "huge" queries requiring arbitrary quantities of temporary secondary storage. Thus, a user can stop execution whenever satisfied with the query accuracy, which may translate to dramatic time savings during exploratory processing. Speaker: Christopher M. Jermaine - Research Scientist Chris Jermaine is an assistant professor in the CISE Department at the University of Florida, where he studies databases and data management. He is the recipient of a 2008 Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellowship, a National Science Foundation CAREER award, and a 2007 ACM SIGMOD Best Paper Award. He received a BA from the Mathematics Department at UCSD, and a PhD from the College of Computing at Georgia Tech. Tags: google techtalks techtalk engedu talk talks googletechtalks education |

Why Won't McCain Sign the GI Bill? http://therealmccain.com/gibill Faced with unprecedented filibusters, the only way to ensure Senate passage of the GI Bill is to get 60 co-sponsors. So far, John McCain has refused. The same McCain who insists he supports our troops. The same McCain who is voting lockstep with the Bush administration (who have also resisted this bill). We need to get John McCain to lead -- to sign now and signal to other Republican leaders that we should be strongly behind our vets. Romney: 'Obama A Senator Killer' - gonna 'take care of' John McCain Calls McCain "A Washington Insider"... If you can't believe in who you are supporting, how can you believe in the Party you are supporting? Mitt Romney gives John McCain a vote of NO CONFIDENCE against Barack Obama in the 2008 Election. He says Senator McCain is a Washington insider - the very thing that will be UNABLE to make change in Washington. So if you believe him then, well, McCain is unfit as an agent of change for the White House. The first rule of getting big things done is believing in the mission. If Romney doesn't believe that the mission of the Republican Party is possible, I guess he is just waiting this one out for a Presidential run in 4 years. Hope that doesn't bother McCain - to have someone who REALLY doesn't want to see you win - because they have a better chance of becoming president in 4 years than 8 years. Boy that Romney sure knows how to tell it like it is! McCain - the Ultimate Washington Insider - seven houses, eight houses, nine houses... and counting. How many houses are not even recorded in the United States? Will someone ask him to tell us how many residences he has OUTSIDE of the US vs. inside the US - I bet you'll be shocked. Oh, that's right... I mean how many CINDY has, because he has a paper trail loophole that points all things back to Cindy - but then lives off the financial benefits of it all - but without reporting all those who are putting money in to her hands. Sounds very Presidential if you ask me. But does it sound like change? I think Mitt Romney is right. The GOP is supporting a losing cause. ***************** Vice Presidential pick selection announcement surprise choice selects announces Governor Senator Mitt Romney John McCain Barack Obama Vice President VP Pick Choice Convention GOP Republican Democratic Stadium Temple iran iraq war Russia Georgia Pakistan China Putin war north korea islamic terrorists islam Tags: Mitt Romney John McCain Barack Obama Vice President VP Pick Choice Convention GOP Republican Democratic Stadium Temple |

First Latch 1 of 3 This is an excellent video, by the wonderful Dr Jack Newman, showing a classic cross-cradle hold, and a baby latching well. Notice how gentle and respectful of the baby Dr Newman, and the mother, are. Only two interventions happen - one to pull the baby's hand gently out of the camera view - so you can see what's happening, and one very gentle encouraging finger to the chin after latch has happened. No one is telling this baby she doesn't know what to do! :-) No one is 'traffic wardening' the mother, and making her lose confidence. This is good stuff, and if it doesn't match your own 'support' experience, find better support! There a variety of volunteer organisations who will give you this sort of support - do use them! :-) http://www.llli.org/ http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/ http://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/ This baby is small and quite young. Notice how easily the mother is supporting the baby's shoulders and neck, and managing to keep the length of the baby's body snug and secure across her body. This can be an excellent hold for new mothers, but all that's important is that you and baby are comfortable, and the breastfeeding is working well. As baby gets older, and heavier, Mum and Baby will find different holds that keep them both feeling supported and happy. The important part of this video is what's happening at the mouth/nipple exchange. You hear Dr Newman say to wait for the 'gape' and then you let baby attach. The point is that quite a lot of breast needs to go into the mouth, for milk to transfer. Baby having too shallow a latch is a classic way to have sore nipples. If it's painful - something is wrong! Incidentally that jaw action you see is one reason breastfeeding contributes so much to the overall development of the baby - that jaw action is working on moving the plates in the baby's head back into place from the birth canal squish, and is building excellent muscle tone in the jaw and face, helping build up to good chewing and speaking skills. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/start/basics/latch-resources.html Is another good resource - don't make the mistake of thinking the hand in this animation is 'pushing', it's supporting after the event, not leading it. http://www.wiessinger.baka.com/bfing/howworks/latchtalk.html http://users.iptelecom.net.ua/~vylkas/flash/baby12b_content.html and, of course... http://www.drjacknewman.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5&Itemid=6 Good Luck! Natalia - Perfect Day http://www.nataliaofficial.com If you are a fan of rising UK pop star Natalia, but haven't had the time to go around and read all the information about her, you've come to the right place. Here's a quick take on Britain's newest contribution to the roster of pop female artists. Natalia is actually Natalia Hajjara. Her father is Lebanese-Jordanian while her mother is Welsh-Greek. They separated when she was 3, and for a time she lived with her dad in Jordan. Natalia took up classical ballet on a full scholarship from Elmhurst Ballet School, one of Britain's leading dance schools. It was only later during her studies that she also studied jazz as a musical form, which eventually led her on to her singing career. She cites R&B, soul, and jazz as other influences to her pop music. Natalia's first musical stint was with girl band Pussy Katz. Short-lived, obviously as there's hardly anything on the internet that mentions them. Her first real break in the industry came when she was discovered by music producer K Warren. Natalia's first hit single is actually "Thanx 4 Nothing." This song was among several Natalia penned and produced with Warren. It hit the top of the charts of MySpace unsigned artists during 2006. It was in December of that year that Mark Shimmel of Upper 11 Records discovered and her and signed her to their label. Natalia's upcoming album is entitled "All of Me." There are already two singles out for this album, "Pretty Like Me" and "Perfect Day." In the meantime, you can also catch Natalia as she is currently on tour, supporting girl band Girls Aloud. Here are a few fun facts about Natalia pulled from her blogs and journals that might interest her loyal fans. Natalia has formed her own club called Unique and United. This is her own personal effort to encourage the youth to look use their talents and abilities to express themselves, and to appreciate their unique beauty and individuality. It's already spawned a spin-off magazine with the same name. Natalia actively campaigns for youth charities, especially for the programs against bullying. She's currently an active supporter of UK Youth and Beat Bullying, charities that help support youth programs that seek to fight bullying of all forms in the schools and communities. Natalia often gets into trouble with the law! But not in an Amy Winehouse or Britney Spears way. She admits that she's not a very good driver and has a tendency to inadvertently park in places where it's not allowed. Traffic tickets in her name are not an uncommon occurrence. Natalia is afraid of peacocks! During one of her recent supporting gigs for Girls Aloud at Tottenham Castle, she had an encounter with the birds that wandered the grounds of the castle. She called them "big scary pheasants" and ended up hiding behind her manager and friend. Finally, a "Perfect Day" blouse is already available in Topshop's flagship store in Oxford. Ronald Reagan - A Time for Choosing (October 27, 1964) This is an excerpt of the 30 minute speech supporting the Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater. Reagan speaks of big government, high taxation, and the "war on poverty." He addresses foreign policy issues including the risk of appeasement, "peace through strength," and the Vietnam War. The speech establishes Reagan as an important figure in the conservative wing of the Republican party. To a significant degree, Ronald Reagan's election to the presidency stems from this speech, given on national television on behalf of, and sponsored by, Barry Goldwater's 1964 presidential campaign. The speech remains amazingly fresh as a statement of modern American conservative philosophy four decades after it was delivered. Sweet Victory Spongebob Music Video (extended) From the "Band Geeks" episode of Spongebob Squarepants, there was a song called Sweet Victory played at the end. This wasn't even half the length of the total song! Therefore, i have taken it upon myself to bring you the full version of the song in all its spongebob glory! *NOTE: This song is sung by David Eisley, not kiss or anyone else (except perhaps the spongebob movie). The only thing i did was cut parts of the episode and set it to the music. However, it was -me- that did the cutting and editing of the episode in this case. EDIT: For those stubborn people who do not have their facts straight, here are some pages with RELIABLE sources that support David glen Eisley as the singer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweet_Victory http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0252112/ thanks to "Wenefreda" for this youtube link supporting my claim: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp3jda591M4 NEW note: if anyone has any complaints about this video, please message my account and I'll respond accordingly. ANOTHER new note: Many people have been asking me how i came across this FULL VERSION of the song. I'd love to say i was able to come across the CD , but sadly, i was not able to find the CD for sale anywhere. In fact, i could not even find proof of the CD containing Sweet Victory on the internet. So, here's a download link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=79ZAQ4QR Enjoy! :) EDIT: As many ppl know, megaupload has a *ridiculous* limit on the number of free downloads per day: 1! So, i have included another link if somehting happened to go wrong. I'm new to this file hosting site, but it seemes to be like megaupload without the 1-file-a-day limit. If nothing else, the wait time isn't as much as megaupload. http://w15.easy-share.com/1700772556.html Tags: Rock sweet victory spongebob squarepants music vid video david eisley band geeks full new awesome best episode |
