Telescope "What You Wish" Video by Dianna Dilworth Directed by Dianna Dilworth Greg Wiz lives in New York City & plays and records with NYC singer Jenifer Jackson, avant-pop band Nervous Cabaret, The Autumn Defense (John Stirratt and Pat Sansone of Wilco), the Honorary Title and Joseph Arthur. Dave Rosser lives in New Orleans and plays guitar for LA's Twilight Singers with Greg Dulli, and has recorded with Emerson Hart (Tonic), The Twilight Singers, CC Adcock (Little Band O'Gold), Tom Maxwell (Squirrel Nut Zippers), Jason Ross (7Mary3) and can be found sometimes darkening various stages around the French Quarter. Telescope began in 2004 as a collaboration between songwriter-percussionist Greg Wiz (NYC) and multi-instrumentalist Dave Rosser (New Orleans). The two had roots in New Orleans in the 90's and put out 3 albums with local favorites Daydreams+Curry. The two found the separation frustrating and began a collaboration via American Airlines and Fedex, recorded in New York and New Orleans over about a year. It documents the changes and gestalt of that time. The album features appearances by Joseph Arthur, Jenifer Jackson and Pat Sansone, and is produced by the band with Benjamin Mumphrey (Frank Black) and super-genius Mike Napolitano (J Arthur, Blind Melon, Twilight Singers). XMM-Newton Space Telescope After launch from Kourou, French Guiana on 10 December 1999, the European Space Agency's X-ray Multi-Mirror satellite is the most powerful X-ray telescope ever placed in orbit. Scientists are sure the mission will help solve many cosmic mysteries, ranging from enigmatic black holes to the formation of galaxies. Many celestial objects generate X-rays in extremely violent processes. But Earth's atmosphere blocks out these X-rays, messengers of what occurred in the distant past when stars were born or died, and clues to our future. Only by placing X-ray detectors in space can such sources be detected, pinpointed and studied in detail. XMM-Newton, the largest science satellite ever built in Europe, has an unprecedented sensitivity. XMM-Newton carries three very advanced X-ray telescopes. They each contain 58 high-precision concentric mirrors, delicately nested to offer the largest collecting area possible to catch the elusive X-rays. These Mirror Modules allow XMM-Newton to detect millions of sources, far more than any previous X-ray mission. Tags: XMM-Newton Space Telescope ESA |

The story of the Hubble Space Telescope and where we go ... On August 11th, 2008 the Hubble Telescope hit the 100,000 orbit mark! Since its launch in April of 1990 the Hubble Space Telescope has been traveling at 5 miles per second with its on-board odometer racking up around 2.72 BILLION miles! That's about 5,700 trips to the moon and back! In October of this year the STS-125 crew will be be working on the 5th and final servicing mission to Hubble. There are currently 5 spacewalks scheduled for Atlantis where astronauts will install new equipment and repair broken instruments. Once this mission is complete, NASA's favorite telescope will need to live out the remainder of its days alone in space, with no chance of repair. This is the story of the Hubble Space Telescope, or HST. Tags: atlantis esa hst hubble james jwst nasa ov-104 space spacevidcast sts-125 sts-31 sts-61 telescope webb |

Integral Space Telescope Integral - Observing the violent and extremely variable universe. A video by ESA regarding the Integral space telescope. 'At the Science Data Centre of ESA's Integral mission, in Versoix, Switzerland, scientists using the space observatory target and study known sources of gamma-rays. But Integral is also designed to record serendipitous phenomena, or unexpected transient objects. The observatory plays the role of a sentinel alerting the worldwide scientific community about new and unusual high-energy events in the universe. When such events occur, data is sent to its owner before the scientific community is alerted. So that other observatories and telescopes also have the chance to observe the object in question. Gamma-rays come from all around the universe, and when collecting data, Integral must filter point sources from background noise. For Integral, the level of noise in the gamma-ray environment is quite high. Poland's Centre for Space Research helped develop the observatory's noise reduction system -- one of the satellite's most important subsystems.' Spherical Amusements - Stargazer (Hubble Telescope Video) pictures are copyright of nasa music is copyright of spherical amusements The Hubble Space Telescope (HST; also known colloquially as "the Hubble" or just "Hubble") is a space telescope that was carried into Earth orbit by the Space Shuttle in April 1990. It is named for American astronomer Edwin Hubble. Although Hubble was not the first space telescope, it is one of the largest and most versatile, and well known as both a vital research tool and a public relations boon for astronomy. The HST is a collaboration between NASA and the European Space Agency, and is part of NASA's Great Observatories series, with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and the Spitzer Space Telescope.[3] Space telescopes were proposed as early as the 1940s. The Hubble was funded in the 1970s, with a proposed launch in 1983, but the project was beset by technical delays, budget problems, and the Challenger disaster. When finally launched in 1990, scientists found that the main mirror had been ground incorrectly, severely compromising the telescope's capabilities. However, after a servicing mission in 1993, the telescope was restored to its intended quality. Hubble's position outside the Earth's atmosphere allows it to take extremely sharp images with almost no background light. Hubble's Ultra Deep Field image, for instance, is the most detailed visible-light image of the universe's most distant objects ever made. Many Hubble observations have led to breakthroughs in astrophysics, such as accurately determining the rate of expansion of the universe. The Hubble is the only telescope ever designed to be serviced in space by astronauts. To date, there have been four servicing missions. Servicing Mission 1 took place in December 1993 when Hubble's imaging flaw was corrected. Servicing missions 2, 3, and 4 repaired various sub-systems and replaced many of the observing instruments with more modern and capable versions. However, following the 2003 Columbia Space Shuttle disaster, the fifth servicing mission was canceled on safety grounds. After spirited public discussion, NASA reconsidered this decision, and administrator Mike Griffin gave the green light for one final Hubble servicing mission. This is now planned for October 2008. The planned repairs to the Hubble will allow the telescope to function until at least 2013, when its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), is due to be launched. The JWST will be far superior to Hubble for many astronomical research programs, but will only observe in infrared, so it would complement (not replace) Hubble's ability to observe in the visible and ultraviolet parts of the spectrum. Hubble Telescope Deep space From its low orbit just 600 km (373 mi) above Earth's surface, the Hubble Space Telescope is able to observe the universe with incredible clarity. Free from the atmosphere's turbulent air that blurs incoming light and absorbs infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths, Hubble has taken over 400,000 observations and provided data for thousands of scientific papers. Since its launch in 1990, Hubble — the only space telescope to gather data in visible, infrared, and ultraviolet wavelengths — has offered a unique and detailed view of the universe. One of the most striking images produced by the telescope was the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). At the time of its release in 1996, HDF was the deepest optical view of the universe, showing the farthest and youngest galaxies ever to be seen. The image was taken of a tiny portion of sky and displays over 1,500 galaxies with a wide range of shapes and sizes. Tags: Hubble Telescope Deep space Kent hovind ken hamm |
