Director: Rebcca Sommer © HUNTED LIKE ANIMALS http://www.rebeccasommer.org/ This is an excerpt of a 715 minute long documentary: This clip is especially sad- a little Hmong Lao boy, tortured by soldiers - inside of LAOS, among testimonies made by the refugees: The ethnic Hmong Lao refugees who fled from Laos to Thailand explain what the military inside of Laos did to them, while they were running and hiding, half starved, from the attacks by the soldiers. Some footage in the 75 minute-long educational documentary "Hunted Like Animals" was filmed by the Hmong-in-hiding themselves- in the mountainous conflict areas of Laos. (Cameras were smuggled in, and tapes out of the conflict area by Fact Finding Commission.) Thousands of Hmong Lao fled from Laos to Thailand - starting 2004- to escape increasing military attacks inside of Laos, and settled in Thailand's Ban Huay Nam Khao Refugee Camp. Over 1300 DVD of HUNTED LIKE ANIMALS were disseminated to governments, UN system and NGOs. Even so diplomats and UN officials has no access to the people-in-hiding inside of Laos, or to the refugees in Thailand's refugee camp - HUNTED LIKE ANIMALS brings the voices of the desperate Hmong Lao directly to them. Chinese Farmers Tortured After Appealing CHAN: We have another story from China highlighting the poor treatment of farmers. Local Communist authorities are taking their land for building factories but are not giving the farmers fair compensation. When the farmers complain or appeal, police and hired thugs are called in to crack down on them. The farmers contacted our reporters hoping to get their story heard. Here's more from Qinghe District in Jiangsu province. STORY: The farmers tell us that in 2006, the local authorities threatened them, saying if they did not take a low payment for their land, the CCP would destroy their crops. When the farmers refused, the Secretary of Politics and Law in Qinghe District, and the police director, sent in about a thousand police and thugs. They used tear gas, electric batons, and fire extinguishers to suppress the villagers. [Local Farmer]: "The secretary of the Politics and Law Committee, and director of the police department, led nearly a thousand people. Many are police, some are workers from other regions. They paid these workers 100 yuan and told them to beat us up. The local villagers had no other means but to fight them. We had no choice! They injured many villagers. Some women were dragged along the ground and had their clothes ripped off. Even people passing by were beaten." After this happened the villagers went to appeal in Beijing for their rights. But they were intercepted and detained in a basement in a detention center midway [Local Farmer]: "A lot of villagers went to appeal and were stopped many times. No one has addressed this issue for us. When they went to appeal, they were removed from the appeal office by the Huaian police. The appealers were shoved into a car and tortured on the trip back from Beijing to Huaian. The villagers were then locked in a basement. Police used plastic sticks to beat their faces. They said that if you appeal we will eliminate your family." Qinghe District has about 600 families who have farmed this area for generations.
