Poema para Magic Johnson (Quincy Troupe, Estados Unidos) Memoria del Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín. Quincy Troupe nació en Nueva York, Estados Unidos, en 1943. Poeta, narrador, ensayista, profesor universitario. Ha publicado, entre otros, los libros de poemas: Embryo (Embrión), 1971; Skulls Along the River (Cráneos a los largo del río), 1984; Weather Reports: New and Selected Poems (Reporte del clima: poemas nuevos y seleccionados), 1991; Avalanche (Avalancha), 1997; Trascircularities; New and Selected Poems (Transcircularidades; poemas nuevos y selectos), 2002; y más recientemente, The Architechture of Language (La arquitectura del lenguaje). Es profesor emérito de escritura creativa y de literatura americana y caribeña en la Universidad de California. Actualmente edita Black Renaissnace Noire, un periódico académico, cultural, político y literario publicado por el Programa de estudios africanos y el Instituto de Asuntos Afroamericanos de la Universidad de Nueva York. Sus poemas y prosas han sido traducidos al francés, español, alemán, italiano, ruso, polaco, y holandés. Ha leído su obra a lo largo de los Estados Unidos, al igual que en Europa, África, Canadá, el Caribe, México y Brasil. Ha sido profesor en diversas universidades de África y Norteamérica. Fue co-autor, junto a Miles Davis del éxito editorial Miles: The Autobiography (Miles: la autobiografía, 1989). Ha publicado los libros para niños Take it to the hoop, Magic Johnson (Llévala al aro, Magic Johnson), basado en su popular "Poema para Magic" 2000; Little Stevie (El pequeño Stevie), 2005 y Hallalujah (Aleluya), sobre el viejo Ray Charles, 2006. Entre los autores que reconoce le han influenciado se encuentran, entre otros, Pablo Neruda, Cesar Vallejo, Aime Cesaire, T.S. Eliot, Walt Whitman, Jean-Joseph Rabearivello, Langston Hughes, Allen Ginsberg, Amiri Baraka y Derek Walcott y también los músicos Miles Davis, Chuck Berry, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, The Beatles, Beethoven, Mozart y la música de África, el Caribe y Brasil. En su poesía trata de conjugar lo visual con lo musical de tal manera que el lector/audiencia pueda visualizar y escuchar lo que poema trata de hacer, mientras al mismo tiempo experimenta las cualidades meditativas del poema que vienen incluidas con la experiencia de la lectura. El poeta lee su poema en ingles durante la celebración del XVI Festival Internacional de Poesía de Medellín, la traducción al castellano fue realizada por Ricardo Gómez. Soul Speed is a dance theatre troupe based in Whaingaroa Raglan, who tell stories from the majestic waters surrounding Aotearoa New Zealand and the World. The artists involved have come from a vast background of professional performing arts. Through the mediums of dance, live music both traditional and classical, costume design, and theatre performers have come together inspired by collective concerns over environmental issues. Over the last two years Soul Speed has shared their passion for environmental preservation with their passion for creative arts expression. Awe Waiwai - Ancient Essence, contemporary and indigenous in its approach to raising awareness about the environment and our interconnectedness with it, has evolved from the performers own learning of the critically endangered species of the North Island Hector Dolphin called Popoto, or Maui's Dolphin. 'Te Karanga Tohora' features a live recording of a humpback whale gifted by marine biologist Liz Slooten of the Otago University, mixed with vocals and indigenous instruments from around the world, this composition has a magical effect on audiences that leave's them moved and uplifted. "Our performances are interactive with the audience as the troupe feel its important to involve them, so we the performers are not separate by doing this they become connected then of course 'effected' which is where positive change begins." 'Flight of the Toroa' (Albatross) this solo depicts the splendor of the Albatross, the Symbol of the Southern Seas. Held aloft on regal wings, the silent swooping observer sees all the natural wonders ocean viewing can offer, recalling our empathy with the ancients of the sea.
