Unemployment Data Shows Ongoing Weakness BusinessUnemployment Data Shows Ongoing WeaknessUnemployment Data Shows Ongoing WeaknessThe Associated PressFewer Americans have signed up for unemployment benefits last week, but not enough to obscure continuing weakness in the country's labor market. (July 10)New applications for unemployment insurance fell last week by a seasonally adjusted 58,000 to 346,000. A year ago, the figure stood at 304,000, showing a continuing weakness in employment conditions. But the number of people continuing to receive unemployment benefits jumped by 91,000 to 3.2 million for the week. The gain leaves the filings at the highest level since December 2003. Given this environment, shoppers are trading down to less expensive stores, benefiting Wal-Mart, Costco and other low-price operators. Wal-Mart reported a robust 5.8 percent gain in same-store sales, saying economic stimulus checks helped fuel purchases of groceries and other necessities. But that increase is putting a dent in other retailers such high-end mall-based apparel stores such as the Limited and The Gap . ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) Tags: economy unemployment data shows ongoing weakness |

Unemployment Rises, Oil Prices Up BusinessUnemployment Rises, Oil Prices UpUnemployment Rises, Oil Prices UpThe Associated PressIt was a batch of bad for the economy today, and the Dow industrials tanked in response falling nearly 400 points. The dive followed the biggest monthly jump in unemployment in 20 years. It's the biggest one day surge in oil prices ever. (June 6)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] It was a down day on Wall Street Friday....way down.Stocks tanked ----with the Dow industrials sinking almost 400 points to close close to 12,210. (( twelve thousand, two hundred ten))Also suffering Friday--the tech heavy NASDAQ--which lost three percent. To blame ------A spike in oil prices -- up more than 11 dollars per barrel. The release of the May jobs report also worried investors. The Labor Department said the nation's unemployment rate rose to 5.5 percent in May. [Notes:Sam Stovall, Senior equities analyst at Standard and Poor's:]SOT: "I think that now that we are seeing energy prices remain stubbornly high, consumer confidence being at a 15 year low and that also now with employment falling more than people had anticipated, that as a result I think investors are now trying to regauge what kind of a forecast they can have for this recession and what it is likely to do to the economy in general and to other sectors of the economy - in particular retailers." Already, consumers are spending less due to soaring food and energy prices and oil's ascent on Friday added to the market's trepidation. [Notes:Sam Stovall, Senior equities analyst at Standard and Poor's:] SOT: "So I think in general investors are trying to figure this out to say if the rest of the world continues to do fairly well and that demand for energy remains fairly healthy and at the same time, the value of the dollar declines, which also is providing some support to energy prices, that as a result there probably could be sort of a cascading effect on the economy and possibly on the overall market." Signs that the job market is deteriorating more than anticipated ----could thwart Wall Street's hopes that the economy was poised for recovery later this year ----a belief that HAD helped drive the stock market higher over the past few months. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) ANCHOR VOICE: Mike Gracia -------------------------VIDEO PRODUCER: Michael Waldon ------------------------------VIDEO SOURCE: APTN--------------------------VIDEO APPROVAL: Donna Starddard ------------------------------VIDEO RESTRICTIONS:----------------------------------SCRIPT/WIRE SOURCE:------------------------------------ Tags: wall street unemployment rises oil up |

November 08, 2007 Unemployment Gold surged up to $840 US dollars yesterday, although is now back to about $830. The US dollar is getting beaten up in foreign exchange markets. The reason? The international credit crunch is biting with a vengeance. Today we look at another marker for risk, the oil price. We also review yesterday's official rate hike in Australia. And we will review what the other media are reporting. But first, we will look at the latest unemployment figures. Cantiga do Desemprego. Song of Unemployment. Song of unemployment I smoke a cigarette on bed in January. I close the curtain of life, I yawn in February. And I'm looking for work in the hope of March April I was tired and I tired not what I do. I observe through a funnel the promise of May, because I no longer expect what was promised, that no longer come. I burn the sunny days of June, in July. I rub my hands with a smile happy to rubble. For your great pain, I take dinner with you in silence and slowly forgotten, I will say goodbye in August. My September lost in a corner that I grazed. And I think in October as little as possible. But when I feel the truth of what I am tired There has never been the intention of a time wandering. And I'm Feeling forces in November, I swear to fight in December. Unemployment blues : Red red wine - Tony Tribe I have just recently obtained a new job after a long time searching and thought i would do a tribute video about unemployment and as a farewell to the good ol' days of lounging around watching telly. The video has a selection of photos of the unemployed and from job centres as well as a few cartoons about job hunting. It ends with a short clip of Rab C. Nesbitt landing a job at the jobcentre. Now there is a man who knows all about work ! LOL The song "Red red wine" is the original version by Tony Tribe who sings it much better than UB40. For those too young to remember UB40 are named after the old unemployment form, the UB40. Bush excuse for unemployment rate 'ridiculous' During an economic speech today, President Bush partly blamed a dramatic rise in unemployment on new workers entering the workforce. Later, in a CNN interview, Bush Labor Secretary Elaine Chou also said that the increase the unemployment rate was "caused in part by a surge of young entrance into the job market." CNN's Senior Business Correspondent Ali Velshi weighed in that Bush Administration excuses for the poor economy were "ridiculous." Velshi explained, "I just wish they wouldn't say that. President Bush said something earlier about how the unemployment rate today — the increase — was because a whole bunch of teenagers have joined the workforce, that's the point. 100,000 people join the working age working force every month. If we don't create 100,000 jobs every month, we're not doing the right thing." Tags: CNN President Bush unemployment rate |
