Padre Pio, the fist years - part 2 (the stigmatas - 1919) Padre Pio was born to Maria Giuseppa (Di Nunzio - her maiden name) and Grazio Forgione, peasant farmers, in the small Italian village of Pietrelcina, a little town located a few miles from Benevento in southern Italy, on May 25, 1887. He was baptised Francesco in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli (Our Lady of Angels), the old parish church, located in Pietrelcina. He entered the monastery of Morcone, at the 15 years of age, on January 6, 1903 as a novitiate of the Capuchin Friars. A year later on January 22, 1904 he took simple vows and commenced studying to be a priest and on January 27, 1907, he took his solemn vows. He was ordained a priest on August 10, 1908 in the Cathedral of Benevento. The five wounds of Our Lord's Passion appeared on his body on Friday, September 20, 1918 corresponding to the Stigmata of Christ. He is the first stigmatized priest in the history of the Catholic Church and bore the Stigmata for over 50 years. The wounds never became infected, instead they produced "a large cup of blood everyday" for fifty years, the longest of any stigmatic. He spent most of his priesthood as a Capuchin Priest at Our Lady of Grace Friary, in San Giovanni Rotondo, Foggia, Italy. He provided Penitential counsel and spiritual guidance to innumerable people via the Confessional and written correspondence. He spent long hours in daily prayer and suffered intensely, both physically and spiritually until he went to his eternal reward. Supernatural powers are attributed to him such as his body giving off the perfume of jasmine, the ability to bilocate (appearing in two places at once), and his extraordinary ability to read minds of people, especially in the confessional. He also converted many people, he was able to read souls and was instrumental in many physical cures. There are testimonies that these cures are continuing to this day through Padre Pio's intercession. The five wounds healed two days before his death symbolizing his "resurrection and holy reward". He died at the age of 81 on September 23, 1968 and was entombed in the crypt of Our Lady of Grace Church. His funeral attracted 100,000 mourning people and to this day people visit his tomb from all around the globe. On February 16, 1973, the Archbishop of Manfredonia, Monsignor Valentino Vailati, consigned the documentation to the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints in order to obtain the "nihil obstat" to commence the process of Padre Pio's Beatification. Sagra del Salame e della torta d'erbe a Brunelli (Borgotaro) La sagra del salame nostrano e della torta d'erbe, a Brunelli, frazione di Borgo Val di Taro (Parma), in pieno Appennino tosco-emiliano Festa del salame e della torta d'erbe di Brunelli, edizione 2008: una giornata di splendida primavera valtarese ha coronato una bellissima manifestazione, nostrana e piacevole come poche. Pomeriggio di grande festa la scosa domenica a Brunelli, frazione di Borgo val di Taro, dove si è svolta la festa del salame e della torta d'erbe. Una manifestazione dalle origini antichissime, che apre la bella stagione all'insegna della semplicità e dell'allegria, il tutto condito dalla buona tavola. Protagonista infatti di questa festa, organizzata dal Comitato di Brunelli e dall'assessorato al turismo del Comune di Borgotaro, è da sempre la torta d'erbe, piatto tipico della zona che di paese in paese varia anche sensibilmente, mentre da qualche anno si è aggiunta anche una speciale attenzione per il salame nostrano. Da otto anni a questa parte poi l'assessore Claudio Barilli con i volontari del comitato organizzano una vera e propria competizione con tanto di giuria di buongustai, che eroicamente passano il pomeriggio a degustare e votare i prodotti in gara, che vengono sia da commercianti del settore che da privati cittadini. Al termine della festa sono stati quindi premiati i vincitori, e per la torta d'erbe il primo posto è andato a Elisa Tresoldi, che con Monica Vietti ha rilevato da pochi mesi la gestione della "Bottega del chisolino", uno storico locale di Borgotaro. Secondo e terzo posto, invece, due privati, la rispettivamente la signora Rita Berni di Brunelli e Vittorio Giraud di Borgotaro. La competizione dei salami invece ha visto tre sezioni divise per provenienza, quindi Valtaro, Valceno ed esterni, ed una classifica assoluta che ha visto sul podio al primo posto Soi Angelo di Varsi, Norberto Vignali di Sala Baganza e Flavio Savani, macellaio di Borgotaro.
