Magic? Think Again - the REAL answer a look at how it works from a degree level chemists perspective. DISCLAIMER: I should point out that mixing two glasses of whiskey and water will INITIALLY show a reasonably good seperation. HOWEVER, the 'seperation' will not go to compeletion, as the time it takes for the mixtures to seperate(~10 mins) is easily long enough for the ethanol and colloids to diffuse into the rest of the glasses. What I mean by this is that by mixing whiskey and water, they don't change places, you just get one more concentrated whiskey than the other (some whiskey is still left in the bottom glass). The only way to seperate them properly is in the way described in the video. Please feel free to pass comment on this, but I'm not going to take any notice unless you stick to the subject! For anyone who is wondering, I am currently a student, studying a masters in Chemistry at Bristol University, UK. information on miscibility, why alcohol and water mix; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miscible hydrogen bonding; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_bonding information on how why liquids seperate; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiphasic_liquid ethanol, check under 'physical properties', and under 'properties' on the right hand side; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol I hope I've helped your understanding of this! as I managed to balls up the credits, I should mention the original video I saw was posted by vidsXP By the way, I wouldn't suggest trying to drink the whiskey if you seperate it with glycerine, glycerine doesn't taste particularly nice ;) Tags: magic think again science whisky water illusion trick cool answer whiskey the twisted blue thetwistedblue chemistry why |
