And the band played Waltzing Mathilda http://www.atheturk.com In memoriam of thoses, anzacs, turks, frenchs who lost their lives in Gallipoli. The song "Waltzing Mathilda" is performed by the Pogues. When I was a young man I carried my pack And I lived the free life of a rover From the Murrays green basin to the dusty outback I waltzed my Matilda all over Then in nineteen fifteen my country said Son It's time to stop rambling 'cause there's work to be done So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun And they sent me away to the war And the band played Waltzing Matilda As we sailed away from the quay And amidst all the tears and the shouts and the cheers We sailed off to Gallipoli How well I remember that terrible day How the blood stained the sand and the water And how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter Johnny Turk he was ready, he primed himself well He chased us with bullets, he rained us with shells And in five minutes flat he'd blown us all to hell Nearly blew us right back to Australia But the band played Waltzing Matilda As we stopped to bury our slain We buried ours and the Turks buried theirs Then we started all over again Now those that were left, well we tried to survive In a mad world of blood, death and fire And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive But around me the corpses piled higher Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over tit And when I woke up in my hospital bed And saw what it had done, I wished I was dead Never knew there were worse things than dying For no more I'll go waltzing Matilda All around the green bush far and near For to hump tent and pegs, a man needs two legs No more waltzing Matilda for me So they collected the cripples, the wounded, the maimed And they shipped us back home to Australia The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay I looked at the place where my legs used to be And thank Christ there was nobody waiting for me To grieve and to mourn and to pity And the band played Waltzing Matilda As they carried us down the gangway But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared Then turned all their faces away And now every April I sit on my porch And I watch the parade pass before me And I watch my old comrades, how proudly they march Reliving old dreams of past glory And the old men march slowly, all bent, stiff and sore The forgotten heroes from a forgotten war And the young people ask, "What are they marching for?" And I ask myself the same question And the band plays Waltzing Matilda And the old men answer to the call But year after year their numbers get fewer Some day no one will march there at all Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me And their ghosts may be heard as you pass the Billabong Who'll come-a-waltzing Matilda with me? WALTZING MY MATILDA WALTZING MY MATILDA:: This song is a Vietnam-era anti war song written by a Scottish-Australian singer songwriter named Eric Bogie. He wrote it in 1971, using the Gallipoli campaign in 1915 as a metaphor for the Vietnam war. To make this video I started with WW I and WW II and passed through Korea and Vietnam and on to the entrance into Iraq. You'll keep hearing the recuring lyrics "THERE'LL BE NO MORE WALTZING MATILDA FOR ME". WALTZING here means walking, dancing, traveling, doing things together with your mate so there is a lot of double meaning here. The soldier lost his legs and many people have lost their loved ones and their mates to sickness, or to passing on. In either case for the person who lost limbs or a loved one there'll be no more waltzing for that person for a while. So as you go through the video keep in mine the australian word Waltizing. Matilda means the duffle bag or a wife or girl friend. The title of the song is THE BAND PLAYED WALTZING MATILDA sung by Priscilla Herdman. My Judy is in the Vietnam section with her MASH 4077 tee shirt on. She is also layered in the first photo with the soldiers raising the flag at Iwo Jima. Tags: military music matilda judy rainydog |

Slim Dusty "Waltzing Matilda"(For Matilda Ledger) Unless you are from Australia, you would not know, and probably don't care ... but the song "Waltzing Matilda is the UN-Official National Anthem of Australia. The late "Slim Dusty, one of Australia's most famous Folk Singers performed the song during the Closing Ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. It just so happens that Heath Ledger & his Girlfriend had a baby girl together, and named her "Matilda".... We dedicate this song to her, Matilda Ledger. Eric Bogle - The Band Played Waltzing Matilda November 11 - Remembrance Day, 2007 "Waltzing Matilda" is a very famous Australian folk song and a "Matilda" was the name given to the pack that Australian farm workers carried on their backs. To "Waltz Matilda" meant to carry your pack of belongings through the bush. The song "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" by Eric Bogle is about 50,000 Australian soldiers who fought against Turkish troops and died in the Battle of Gallipoli in World War I. Mixed with pictures from Gallipoli are pictures of past and present Canadian troops because this song and slideshow was played during a Remembrance Day assembly at a Canadian public school. Information about this song was taken from this web page that talks about Eric Bogle's performance of this song: http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/parton/2/matilda.html Tags: Bogle folk soldier gallipoli matilda remembrance war Australia Canada world music ANZAC |

Rolf Harris :: Waltzing Matilda (with lyrics and explanation of them) Rolf Harris singing waltzing Matilda in his charismatic way ... I'm not sure when Rolf Harris recorded Waltzing Matilda, but I know he sang it on Sunday Night at The London Palladium in the sixties. I have tried to include most of the fish, reptiles, mammals and marsupials that are found in Australasia (in alphabetical order) ... but I am well sure that I have missed a few hundred ... I think that there are at least 100 species of birds, and many more snakes, lizards, mammals and for sure fish ... but I might be wrong ... ha ha. So ... way to goooo ... I hope you enjooooy. Oh nearly forgot the lyrics ... Watzing Matilda lyrics ... some written by Rolf Harris ... namely the intro Spoken ( Waltzing Matilda is a song about an Australian Hobo I guess you'd call him. He wanders through the bush- land of Australia and he takes all his meager belongings wrapped up in an old blanket which is strung across his shoulders with an old piece of twine ... and this is called his swag. Hence the name swagman. Now affectionately or otherwise he refers to his swag as Matilda, its like his only companion as he wanders through the bush tracks ... he finds himself talking to it as if its a real person ... So the term Waltzing Matilda is nothing to do with dancing at all, it means in fact carrying this thing on your back through the long lonely stretches of the Australian bush... Couple of other terms quickly, pay attention because I will be asking questions afterwards about this, (the audience titters a bit) ... couple of other terms. A billabong is a pool of deep water, a billy is a little tin can they boil the tea in, a jumbuck is a sheep ... err tucker bag is a bag for carrying tucker (more audience twitters with one guy giving it deep gwaarfs) food bag ... tucker is food ... sort of like a knapsack. What else ??? the squatter is the big land owner, THAT'S ENOUGH LET'S GET ON WITH THE SONG.) Rikkyhardo comment now (What an intro folks ... I told you this guy is great) Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong Under the shade of a Coolibah tree And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me Then down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me Then down came the squatter mounted on his thoroughbred Down came the troopers one two three Right-o where's that jolly jumbuck that you've got in your tucker bag? You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me Right-o where's that jolly jumbuck that you've got in your tucker bag? You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me So up jumped the swagman and he sprang into that billabong You'll never take me alive said he And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong You'll come a-waltz .... Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me.
