Weimar Weimar is one of the great cultural sites of Europe, having been home to such luminaries as Goethe, Schiller, and Herder. It has been a site of pilgrimage for the German intelligentsia since Goethe first moved to Weimar in the late 18th century. The tombs of Goethe, Schiller, and Nietzsche, as well as their archives, may be found in the city. The period in German history from 1919-1933 is commonly referred to as the Weimar Republic, as the Republic's constitution was drafted here because the capital, Berlin, with its street rioting after the 1918 German Revolution, was considered too dangerous for the National Assembly to convene there. Weimar was the center of the Bauhaus movement. The city houses art galleries, museums and the German national theatre. The Bauhaus University and the Liszt School of Music Weimar attracted many students, specializing in media and design, architecture, civil engineering and music, to Weimar. During World War II, there was a concentration camp near Weimar, at Buchenwald, a little wood that Goethe had loved to frequent only 8 kilometers from the city center. From 1949 to 1990 Weimar was in East Germany. Tags: Goethe Listz Schiller Luther history |

Nietzsche At Weimar Nietzsche's final years (1897-1900) were spent in this Weimar home under the care of his sister Elizabeth ... in the clip, archivist Andrea Bollinger questions the usual syphillis diagnosis, remarking that the philosopher's 11-year vegetative state was not typical of the disease ... also mentioned is Elizabeth's role in editing Nietzsche's last work (left unfinished), "The Will to Power," the famous 'transvaluation of highest values'... Magav in front of Bauhaus-Universität, Weimar I wanted to bring The Israeli border police in Weimar, the standard armored jeep that the border police uses to patrol will escort me in my daily life in town. I examine what such an action brings, how the presence of a militarized police force from Israel in a small quiet East German place would be perceived. Would it produce fear, antagonism, discomfort or maybe understanding and sympathy? The site of the Star of David is never neutral on the streets of Germany, all the more so when it is painted on an armored jeep. Not surprisingly, I could not bring a real jeep to Weimar. Instead, I built a two- dimensional life size cut out (like the fake police cars that deter driver from speeding). The cutout can do the same job that a real jeep can do and invoke the discussion I would like to create. Some people might recognize the jeep as an Israeli border police; others, who are less familiar with the situation in Israel/Palestine might not have any reference and not know the origin of the jeep. But all will recognize that it is a militarized jeep. This fake militarized jeep, I feel, will also bring another useful element to the discussion. The fake jeep, the two-dimensional façade barley standing on its wooden frame, is very much like the fake façades of Weimar's historic building. The façades, historical manipulations, and the cultural cloning wish to suggest authenticity, but they do have to be really convincing to fulfill their purpose and to create in Weimar the romantic Disneyland of the east. In the same way, security can work as a façade. It does not really have to be convincing, you don't need expensive systems, trained personnel, intelligence, and expertise. What is needed is a pretense of security, feeling of security, the knowing of its being and the statement that it is present. more info: http://ronen.dvarim.com/ Tags: street magav border police military palsetine israel germany anti-Semitism weimar art public Bauhaus |

Tigers, Muses & Jasmine - The Wild Heroines of Weimar Berlin Micaela Leon & Paul Trueblood, piano In her musical portrayal of eight of the most notorious female trendsetters of Weimar Berlin in the 1920's, the German actress and singer Micaela Leon has been earning raves. In a show that "uncannily conjures the political and social instability of the Weimar Republic" (Jewish Week), Leon has been hailed as "confident and fascinating" (Lively Arts), "stunning and amazing" (Cabaret Hotline) and possessed of "great style in a truly compelling performance" (Cabaret Scenes). Cabaret Hotline calls this "a must-see for cabaret enthusiasts." "Tigers, Muses & Jasmine" intersperses songs by Friedrich Hollaender, Mischa Spoliansky, Hanns Eisler and Kurt Weill with the words, ideas and signature gestures of a remarkable rogues gallery of eight female actress-singers, dancers, a journalist and a politician. The show not only celebrates the avant-garde derring-do of these free spirits, it dramatizes the brewing Nazi storm on the horizon as it grows increasingly menacing. The eight women portrayed -- who traded in the scandal, rebellion and sense of experimentation that swelled in Berlin between the two world wars -- are Marlene Dietrich, Anita Berber, Valeska Gert, Rosa Luxemburg, Blandine Ebinger, Ruth Landshoff, Gabrielle Tergit and Claire Waldoff. Written and performed by Leon, directed by Lina Koutrakos, and with music direction by Paul Trueblood -- a noted expert in the music of this era who collaborated with original "Weimar girl," Greta Keller, as well as Marianne Faithful on her "20th Century Blues" album -- "Tigers, Muses & Jasmine" is the perfect antidote to the blandness of so much of our contemporary theatre. Not only that, and in the opinion of New York Press "there's nothing like seeing what the Nazis considered depraved!" New York Magazine: Backstage at Weimar NY The Weimar period, if you don't know, was the twenties-era German cultural flowering that coincided with the rise of Hitler (let us emphasize, it was coincidence!). Last night's Weimar NY: The Spiegel Sessions, at Spiegeltent, loosely celebrated that slice of history with song, dark irony courtesy of MC Justin Bond of Kiki & Herb, Penny Arcade, and jokes involving duffel bags tossing out plush sticks of TNT. Weimar Berlin - Curt Bois, Reizend (1930) FRIEDRICH HOLLÄNDER (1896- 1976), born in London. He was the son of composer Victor Holländer. Educated at the Berlin Conservatory. By the age of 18 he had become an associate conductor at the Prague Opera House. After studying in Berlin, he composed music for productions by Max Reinhardt and became involved in cabaret and wrote music for the film, The Blue Angel (1930). He left Nazi Germany and emigrated to the United States of America where he wrote the music for over a hundred films, including Destry Rides Again (1939), A Foreign Affair (1948), and Sabrina (1954). Many of his songs were made famous by Marlene Dietrich. He can be seen as the piano accompanist in A Foreign Affair. He received four Academy Award nominations for composition . In 1956 he returned to Germany, and died in Munich in 1976. CURT BOIS (1901--1991) actor, born in Berlin. He began acting in 1907, becoming one of the film world's first child actors, with a role in the silent movie Bauernhaus und Grafenschloß. Bois' acting career spanned eighty years, a longer period than can be claimed by any actor. His final performance was in Der Himmel über Berlin (in English: Wings of Desire) in 1987. Bois was very adaptable, performing in theatre, cabaret, musicals, silent film and "talkies" over his career. In 1934 he was forced to leave Germany. In New York City he found work on stage on Broadway. By 1937 he had found his way to Hollywood, and began acting in American pictures, the best-known of which was Casablanca (1942). After World War II Bois decided it was safe to return to Germany, which he did in 1950. He finished out his life and career in Germany, first in the East, and finally in the West Berlin - the city of his birth, at the age of ninety. Weimar Germany: Mitja Nikisch Orch.-Ich steh' im Schnee,1931 Mitja NIKISCH, pianist (b.1899 in Leipzig, d. 1936). Son of a world-famous conductor of Hungarian origin, Arthur Nikisch (1855-1922), who in turn of XIX/XX c. conducted the Leipzig, and then the Boston Symphony Orchestras. According to his father's will, Mitja played at first the classical music (in 1923 he recorded Chopin's Valse-A minor on a „Duo-Art" roll), and in 1936 he composed his magnum opus, a 36-minute „Piano Concerto", completed shortly before his death, and dedicated to his wife, Barbara. Nevertheless, his true love was the hot life of Berlin in 1920s. He established his own band and in 1925 he performed at the 'Admiral-Cafe' the way, that one prominent guitarist of the time, Otto Sachsenhauer commented. as "the best dance band performance ever heard in Berlin". In 1930-1931 they played in Lutherstrasse at "Casanova International Casino", advertised in popular magazines as the "schöensten Tanz-Diele des Kontinents" („the most beautiful dance-spot in Europe"). Onset of the Nazi rule ruined Mitja's world. Unfulfilled as composer and being „disappointment for the family" - he commited a suicide in Venice, in 1936. Only a handful of his recordings can be scarcely found today in the auctions. Even no good photo of his face can be found in the archives. Composer of this crazy winter-holiday foxtrot is the Polish musician Bronislaw Kaper - who is world-known as author of the 1950s Hollywood evergreen „Hi Li, Hi Lo".
