Hummingbirds http://www.WildlifeTheater.com High quality video I shot in my back yard of ruby-throated hummingbirds hovering, eating, fighting. Features lots of slow-motion shots, and includes a Nessus Sphinx moth, an insect that's often confused for a hummingbird. Caterpillar Pupating Time Lapse http://www.WildlifeTheater.com This is a black swallowtail caterpillar forming its chrysalis, or pupating. This video shows what took about 20 minutes in less than 1 minute. You can see the "segments" of its body getting pushed to the bottom as the skin splits and the chrysalis is revealed. Then it squirms to get the shed skin off the bottom of the chrysalis. It's got to be one of the most amazing phenomena in nature. There's also video of another caterpillar pupating on my website www.WildlifeTheater.com. Tags: butterfly chrysalis time lapse swallowtail pupa pupate metamorphosis caterpillar |

Baby Barn Swallows Being Fed http://www.WildlifeTheater.com The barn swallows finally hatched in the nest above our front door. I think there are five babies. You can tell from the video that both parents take part in the feeding. They also keep the nest clean by removing the babies' fecal sacs (sounds fun, doesn't it?). It looks like whoever has the longest neck wins. You can see more videos like this on www.WildlifeTheater.com. Enjoy! Tags: bird nest hatch egg fledgling feeding |

Time Lapse Of Butterfly's Wings Expanding http://www.WildlifeTheater.com This is time lapse video of a black swallowtail butterfly emerging from its chrysalis and letting its wings expand. When a butterfly comes out, it has to hang upside down to let its wings fill up with fluid before it can fly. This takes a long time so it's hard to see with the naked eye. Speeding up the video let's you see it. There's a slower version of this, and other videos like it, at www.WildlifeTheater.com. I hope you enjoy it. Toad Amplexus http://www.WildlifeTheater.com This is part of toads' (and other amphibians) mating ritual known as amplexus. The male climbs onto the female, latches on, and basically waits for her to release her eggs. In the close-up shots you can see how deeply embedded his front feet are in the female's side. We saw these two like this for two nights, and the female seemed oblivious to her extra baggage. She was still hopping around, eating, chasing insects, etc.... When she's ready, she'll go to water and release her eggs, at which point the male will fertilize them. Multiple males can latch onto the female in amplexus, and all the males can fertilize the eggs. We never found egg strands in any of our shallow pools. This video includes a couple of slow motion shots of the female snagging an insect with her tongue, plus a cameo appearance by Pace, the star of the Stranger In The Pool story on my website www.WildlifeTheater.com Tags: toad frog mating sex amplexus wildlife theater |

A Box Turtle's Morning http://www.WildlifeTheater.com This is the box turtle that hatched in our yard years ago (there's a video of it's mother excavating the nest it was born in on my website). We named it Fen, because it liked to hang out in a toad house under lots of fennel. We used to think it was a boy, but now we think it's a girl based on it's eye color. I found her on the patio this morning and taped her for a while. She gorged herself on some june bugs that were still on the patio from the night before. (There were several in the kiddie pool we have for one of our dogs, so I scooped them out and put them on the patio, and Fen seemed to be very happy about that). After eating she climbed over the edging into the flower bed, and made her way to the toad bath. Why she sat halfway in the bath and half out for so long I have no idea. She wasn't stuck. I also don't know why she put her whole head under water, but she did this many times. I went inside for a few minutes, and when I came back out Fen was gone. Don't believe the stereotype--turtles are NOT slow. There are more videos like this on my personal website www.WildlifeTheater.com Tags: turtle reptile tortoise herp |

Skinks http://www.WildlifeTheater.com On one side of our yard we have a tall retaining wall made of railroad ties. This is evidently a great habitat for skinks (five-lined skinks, I believe) because we have several that live in the railroad ties. Often they'll chase each other around the wall and sometimes get in fights that end with one skink either being thrown off the wall or jumping off on his own. During mating season, the males' heads turn bright orange. You can find more videos like this on www.WildlifeTheater.com Tags: skink lizard reptile animal nature wildlife |

Juncos Scratchin' http://www.WildlifeTheater.com The Dark-Eyed Juncos are back for the winter. Sometimes they eat from the seedheads of plants, but usually they forage on the ground. In our flowerbeds that are covered with mulch, they kick the mulch back and look for seeds or insects on the ground. This video captures some of their behavior. Hope you enjoy it. Gulf Fritillary Butterfly http://www.WildlifeTheater.com Today (8/5/07) I saw this Gulf Fritillary butterfly in our yard. It was busy getting nectar from the flowering lantana. This spring I planted a few of the Gulf Fritillary's host plant -- Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata). This is the plant that Gulf Fritillaries deposit their eggs on, and once the caterpillars hatch they will eat the plant. In the video you'll see wings from above and below, and they have strikingly different patterns. While I was shooting this, I was lucky enough to catch the butterfly depositing an egg on the Passion Flower. As far as I know it's the first Gulf Fritillary egg we've had on the plant. Today was also the first day the plant bloomed, which is shown in the video. Passion Flower is a vine that climbs quickly upwards. One of our plants is already close to 10 feet tall. Name That Bird http://www.WildlifeTheater.com This is a collection of video clips of birds in (or above) our yard. After they've been on screen for a few seconds I put titles up identifying them. These are all pretty common in my area (West Tennessee), but for people in other areas of the country -- or the world -- this may be more of a challenge. Thousands of Tadpoles http://www.wildlifetheater.com/ We thought we had a lot of tadpoles in our fountain last August, but there are so many more right now. I never even noticed any eggs in the water. I don't know yet what type of frog or toad these will be. Occasionally I drop some grass or some pulled weeds into the water to give them more to eat, but eventually most tadpoles become cannibalistic. When we have tadpoles in the fountain, we have to turn off the pump or else they get sucked through the tube and deposited in the top basin where they ride the waterfall back down. In the last shot of the video an underwater beetle goes zipping through. I slowed it down because it's so fast. My best guess is that it's a Water Scavenger Beetle. This is another situation where providing a new habitat -- in this case a body of water -- can attract different wildlife to your yard. Tags: tadpole frog toad amphibian |
