Clinton, McCain win in N.H. Hello on this Wednesday, January 9, 2008. I'm Kristin Volk with today's UPI news headline. Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain are the frontrunners after yesterday's primaries in New Hampshire. Clinton, who finished in third place in Iowa, rebounded to the top, overcoming Senator Barack Obama. Exit polls show female and older voters gave Clinton that much-needed boost. On the Republican side, McCain easily won over second-place finisher Mitt Romney. Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who was the winner of the Iowa caucuses, finished third in New Hampshire. And a new poll out shows McCain's stance on the Iraq war and independent voters helped him win in New Hampshire. The Arizona senator is a strong supporter of President Bush's troop buildup there. Exit polls show that McCain did well with voters who put the war at the top of their agenda. He also scored high among independents, attracting 38 percent of those votes, compared to his to rival Mitt Romney who garnered 16 percent of independents. President Bush is visiting Israel and the Palestinian territories today in an attempt to forge ahead with the peace process there. However, no breakthroughs are expected in the three days of talks. The discussions follow up on an international conference Bush hosted in Annapolis, Maryland last November. In the next few days, the President will try to push Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to move ahead with promises made to try to forge a two-state accord before his term ends next January. Iran is calling a conflict video released by the U.S. fabricated. The four-minute video shows a confrontation between the two nations, where small Iranian boats swarmed around U.S. warships in the Persian Gulf. A spokesman for Iran's Revolutionary Guard Navy reportedly says the tape was compiled using file pictures, and the audio had been made up. Another Iranian official downplayed the incident, saying it wasn't serious. However, the U.S. is calling the event a significant confrontation. Thanks for watching today's update. Check out our special segment called "Nothing But Hope" on upi.com. Have a great day. Tags: Clinton Obama McCain Romney Huckabee Bush Iraq war Israel Palestine Iran Navy female |

Obama, Huckabee win in Iowa Hello! I'm Kristin Volk on this Friday, January 4, 2008 with a UPI news update. Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mike Huckabee are now the frontrunners in the in the White House race after yesterday's caucuses in Iowa. Obama had the support of 38 percent of voters while Huckabee earned 34 percent. Falling behind Obama was John Edwards who came in second place and Senator Hillary Clinton who fell to third. On the Republican side, Mitt Romney trailed Huckabee and Fred Thompson took third place. Next week, the presidential hopefuls square off in the New Hampshire primary. Meanwhile, two White House hopefuls are calling it quits after last night's results. Senators Joe Biden and Chris Dodd are abandoning their bids for the Democratic presidential nomination. Both candidates received less than one percent in the Iowa caucuses. Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is defending himself against accusations that he had a role in former prime minister Benazir Bhutto's assassination. Musharraf says Bhutto ignored government warnings, saying the former prime minister was informed of the threat to being at the park where she was killed last week. He also says he's not satisfied with the investigation into her death. A team of Scotland Yard investigators arrived in Islamabad today to help in the probe of her death. There are more delays in store for space shuttle Atlantis. NASA says the shuttle will be grounded until late January, or more likely, February, to replace a suspect connector in the fuel tank. The connector is believed to be responsible for a series of launch postponements last month. NASA faces a 2010 deadline for retiring its three shuttles and completing the space station. Thanks for watching today's update and for all of us at UPI, have a safe and pleasant weekend. Q&A with Q&J - Who Would Win in a Fight? Video taken at the AFO 2006 "Q&A with Q&J" panel, with Quinton Flynn and Jeff Nimoy. In this clip, Quinton demonstrates what a fight between Axel and Reno would look like... then Jeff decides to start pitching "Who Would Win" pairs. ...but not in the yaoi way. ;) www.jbsstudios.com (We here at JBS Studios freely admit our bias, and vote for Quinton... because our staff is direly in love with this man!) Interview Federer & Wawrinka after Double Win in Beijing This is the interview from Swiss Television at Swiss House in Beijing after winning gold medal in double. Transcript / Translation: Speaker: Some minutes ago Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka arrived at Swiss House. The big party can start. Interviewer: This is he whole proudness of the two olympic gold medalist winner in tennis double: Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka. Welcome here at the Swiss House. It was a big hype for you since the end of the match. Have you had already the time to breeth deeply and to realize what you were able to achieve? Roger Federer: Well a little bit of time we had actually. We were at the press conference, doping control, were taking a shower. After that we clocked with our friends, with all Swiss people who came into the stadium to support us. This was the nice time we get for us until now. Actually it is a little bit busy again but it is a pleasure as well. Interviewer: Stanislas Wawri.. Wawrkin Wawrinka (both have to smile). This is your first Olympic games and already a gold medal. Is it maybe like in a dream for you? Wawrinka: Yes it is like in a dream, that's true. It's something unbelievable to win a gold medal. Above all with double tennis. I've past a really nice week and I'm super happy! Interviewer: It was a great Olympic atmosphere at the tribune. Have you seen and heard the supporters from the Swiss delegation during the match? Wawrinka: Yes, it helped us also a lot. Yesterday at the semi final it was already like this and it helped us a lot. And today they made a lot of more noise. It made the whole thing magic. And also here (at Swiss house) it has a lot of people and it is already 2 o'clock in the morning. Interviewer: It seems you flourished during the double tournament. You played better and better from match to match. Federer: We really started weaker than what we played now at the end. At the end we were able to play the best tennis. That's exactly what I was hoping for as playing together with Stan. So that he can loosen from time to time and getting better and better. Finally he was able to show what he can. That it was the gold medal at the end is a dream. Interviewer: Stan you have enormous developed yourself. How was it for you? Wawrinka: Well it was like I already said: Magic. It's true that we started slowly. I had some difficulties at the first match but then we improved our game. We finished the tournament very solid and it's just great. Interviewer: This is the first Olympic games for Wawrinka. Roger for you the third ones. Which impressions do you take with you from the Olympic games here in Beijing? Federer: To be honest it was kind a stressful week for us. I've played ten or eleven matches within 7 days. I think it is very intensive. We didn't had a lot of time. I thought it will be easier. But the matches started at 4pm. In the last two days I went to bed at 4am. I didn't have had the chance to think about going and watching an other discipline here at the Olympic games. Personally I think it's a pity because it was also one of my goals. In Sydney I was able to watch different kind of things. 4 years ago in Athens I was not able to watch something different. And today I wasn't able again. Therefore I'm a little bit disappointed about that. But I hope the schedule for us the tennis players will be a bit better at the next Games so that we can enjoy it also a bit more. Interviewer: Catchword Olympic Games: We have to bring the question up: It's a gold medal in double. You look very happy. Does this double title outweigh the loss of the single? Federer: Well.. It's for sure something helpful to forget what happened. As you know it was a big goal of this season besides Wimbledon. Both of them I didn't get. Therefore it was hard at the beginning you know. But it was very important that Stan revitalized me. I've tried to revitalize him the same way for the double. And if... I wouldn't say that it was kind of a compensation. It's simple dream I had. Winning gold medal at the Olympic games... never mind if it was in double or single. Afterwards the joy now is kind of bigger because you can share your joy. Also if you have looked at us after winning the match point... celebrating together... it wouldn't have been possible in single. Interviewer: It's nice if you as single sportsmen are able to share this joy. Must be a different feeling as you have in normal matches. I would like to thank you for this interview. Congratulation again Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka and I wish you a pleasant journey to the US Open. Federer: Your welcome.
