John Dean - Bush administration worse than Watergate Bush administration has governed worse than Watergate - says Richard Nixon's former counsel, John Dean The use of 9/11 as a punctuation point, as a defining moment for this presidency is true and untrue. What they've done is they have taken a very tragic event and used it for their maximum political advantage. What they've done with 9/11 is they've taken it and used it and done everything in their power to keep the "terror" in terrorism. Cheney opened the door for some real Washington pros who call themselves neoconservatives, and they have an agenda that they've had in the works long before George Bush arrived. They just, as they wrote in their reports, needed a "trigger event" like Pearl Harbor. They got it with 9/11, and they have imposed their policies as a result -- and not for the better of the nation, or the world. Why the public doesn't react? It beats me. I guess the best example of how secrecy can affect them and they don't even realize it is just a very simple example. It's one of the first acts that Bush does when he becomes president. At Cheney's request, obviously, he makes Cheney the chairman of an energy task force, that will decide the nation's energy policy. This is an industry that has given about $100 million in contributions. It is as close to legalized bribery as you can ever get. How does it affect you? Well, Tony Blair's science adviser, in looking at the overwhelming evidence, has said, openly, that George Bush, and his policies, and what he's doing to the globe and the earth, in global warming, will cause far more damage to the species than all the terrorists in the world can ever cause us. I barely recognize the Republican Party today. In the Republican Party that I was active in, it was really a party of moderation. What I think the party is dominated by now is a radical philosophy. This is a good government issue, not a right-left, Republican versus Democrat [issue]. Therefore in the book, I cite one Republican after the other who are complaining about Bush's secrecy. Now these people don't think this is good Republican politics, they don't think it's good conservative politics; they think it's bad government. If Bush and Cheney are reelected, what I think they'll do is not dissimilar from what they did in their first term, where their goal was to get reelected. It would be to indeed infuse the government with their radical-type thinking. They're not about to send the neoconservatives home. They're not about to change their radical environmental policies. And it'll really be a difficult time for the country. Damage could be done that we'll never unwind. The Future of "For Better or For Worse" TRANSCRIPT FOR HEARING IMPAIRED. The Future of "For Better or For Worse" An interview with cartoonist Lynn Johnston August 2008 As you wrap up the storyline of Elizabeth's wedding, what follows in September? I wanted to end the story with a wedding. Because, really, the story is all about relationships within marriage. It ends on a high note and a philosophical note and yet it begins again right from the beginning, which is very exciting. "The strips beginning in September are not reruns; they're brand new illustrations; brand new content, brand new jokes (everything) ... (well, I hope there are jokes). What's exciting is that I'm drawing in my old style. When I do start putting new retro material in, I want it all to match. What are you calling these new strips that are done in the retro style? "I don't have a name for it, but it's new-runs, I think. It's not re-runs because everything is new, the punch lines, the drawings are new; the only thing retro is the way I'm drawing everything because I want it to flow into the classic material seamlessly if I can and it's a challenge but I'm really enjoying it." What's the ratio of new to old material the first year? I'm hoping to do 50% new for the first year, because I think that will be necessary in order to bring the story together. It will vary; there might be months when there are no old material or no classic material, (cause I don't think it's old—it's all coming new again) Then there will be some where it will be sporadic; it will vary, but there will be an awful lot of new material, especially the Sundays." What's your message to fans and editors? "My fans and my editors--we are a team. I couldn't do this without the joy of knowing that really neat people are reading what I do, and that includes my editors. I've had some wonderful exchanges with my editors. I know some people are concerned about it coming back full circle, starting from the beginning again. I really want them to hang in there with me and see what I do because it's never been done before. I have no one to emulate; to copy. It's a work in progress. It's going to be a whole new generation of people reading this; a whole new batch of work. Come along and see where I go with this. I'll be fun." Why this approach and why now? "Originally, like I said, at this time in my life I thought I would be on a cruise ship to Panama or the Mediterranean; retired with my Tilley hats, my sneakers. But who writes this novel? I have the luxury of writing a novel, and I keep wondering who's writing for me because I never thought I would be single at this time in my life. With that in mind, I still want to work and keep my hand in this and take the opportunity of going back in time. I'm very excited about that. Because I don't have to work 365 days of material into a year, I can still take some time off; I can paint and travel. Can you describe how your style has changed? It was very unsure. Although I was always able to draw pretty well, I did medical illustrations for a quite while, which is very exacting. But the comics style was very very fast and loose probably because I was so busy and I had to get it out fast. I only had from 9 to noon to work, so it was very sloppy, but in being sloppy, it also had a happy freedom to it that it lost. And so I'm looking now as though I'm drawing portraits. I'm changing the shape of John's jaws; and changing the shape ... Elly's nose grew to the size of a potato, and now it's smaller again; the way it was when I first started to draw. My son would call and say, "Mom, what's this about the inflatable nose?"... I would draw her with a bigger nose when she was pissed off about something and smaller when she was being sweet and kind to the kids. Yea, it's a huge difference between the two styles. And going back is like being me again at the age of 30. How often to you get to go back in time? I'm 30 again!" John Mccain/Sarah Palin = worse than George W. Bush We all know McCain has sold his soul to win. Big mistake: the Democrats are taking the GOP bait, especially on Palin. She is the ultimate distraction. If we're not careful she'll be the final distraction. The perfect new celebrity -- Sarah Barracuda -- to capture the message in the 24-hour spin orgy, all the while attacking Obama as an elite celebrity. Any narrative that focuses on her -- any -- is a win for Republicans, carrying an undercurrent of race wars, gender wars, class wars. All ending with a debate on God and a return visit to Rev. Wright. Palin is a gateway drug to a back-alley brawl...with sass and sex. Wonderful. Watch McCain repeat "maverick" 300 times a day, like a mantra, 'til Election Day. Republicans and hockey moms against corruption and Lear jets. Orwell for second graders: distraction and chaos, phony scandals and bullshit patriotics from the crew that would install an inexperienced neophyte -- not even put through the crucible of the national stage -- a heartbeat away from the greatest nuclear arsenal the world has ever known, and not blink. Darkest reptilian politics that speak to the ultimate calcified cynicism of Republicans. Democrats need to...keep the focus relentlessly on the disastrous results of Bush/McCain/Republican rule. They need to remind voters of the disasters of the last seven-plus years. Specifically. And as people have been saying, we need to be mad as well as inspired. But John McCain is the Republican Party as much as Bush -- we need to be constantly reminded of the policies (and, yes, the crimes) that are threatening this country from within...war profiteering, taxpayer-funded mercenary armies and privatizing core functions of state, habeas corpus and warrantless wiretapping and presidential signing statements, and Katrina and justice department politicization, and phony intel and Abu Ghraib, rendition and torture. If the Democratic leadership wants to disregard its base and continue to disregard the rule of law, they deserve to lose...and will. Let's hope the Obama campaign doesn't come to this conclusion 10 days out. He needs to articulate his vision of the future, but he also needs to articulate a version of reality. The fiercest urgency is needed now. But some other fundamentals seem to be lost in the frenzy. McCain is no maverick, but it is worth understanding why the rabid right wing is cheering his call for government "reform" and to change "how government works at every level." McCain won't just be more of the same -- it will be worse than Bush-Cheney -- using the disasters of the past eight years and the actual crises we face to double down on the American Enterprise/Heritage Foundation vision of government that desires, as Grover Norquist said, to shrink government until "we can drown it in a bathtub." Now, no one in their right mind -- including reasonable independents and Republicans -- wants to double down on neocon ideology, but here comes the "maverick" and his economic advisers to use the crises we face to implement more "change" and "reform" to the system by privatizing everything in sight. Is this what the American people want? When they are aware of it, the answer is always no. It's the same bullshit re-branded...Ruin the government you are purporting to run and turn it over to privatization frenzy, creating a shadow government of private corporate rule...they will gut government and privatize everything in sight in the name of responding to the crises they helped engineer through Bush and Cheney. Their view of government is the reverse of the Hippocratic Oath: do harm and then when the patient is sick, give the wrong medicine, watch him die, and sell off the body parts. They will destroy the Department of Energy, HUD and anything else they can get their hands on. With this crew, all you need to do is destroy government, privatize it and get out of the way, and then a magic utopia appears. Well, actually it doesn't, but a lot of connected people get rich, and in the privatized war business, blood money flows and a fuck of a lot of innocent people die. The numbers and the misery are staggering. The legacy of Bush/McCain is a legacy of shame. Any man that stood with this criminal administration should be forced to answer for it. The Republicans have been ruinous and most of it stems from an ideology that leaves the government in ruins. McCain has been on board hook, line and sinker. He voted with Bush over 90% of the time. End of story. It is fundamentally corrupt and dishonest to call it reform when leaders want to cripple government, then hand it over to private industry, usually subsidized by taxpayers, but for other people's profits. More like contempt for government. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-cusack/the-final-distraction-mcc_b_126672.html Tags: Barack Obama Sarah Palin lie john Mccain Joe Biden economy speech interview debate energy oil gas tax Iraq war president |
