Smart Fibres that Sense and Communicate An inaugural lecture by Professor Lin Zhang To watch the entire video, please visit: http://www.aston.ac.uk/about/news/events/lecturevideos.jsp Over the last two decades, the use of optical fibres has revolutionised the way the world exchanges and processes information. Optical fibres, replacing copper wires as the transmission medium, are capable of handling 25 trillion bits of data per second across oceans, to our streets, hospitals, schools and businesses, providing high-speed communications that impacts all facets of modern life. In parallel with astonishing advances in communications, optical fibres now underpin another of today's fastest growing technology sectors, based on sensing and metrology. Smart optical fibre sensors with functions superior to their conventional counterparts, or providing wholly new functions, are capable of measuring and detecting a wide range of physical and chemical/biochemical properties and are being used for structure health monitoring across numerous industrial sectors including military, aerospace, maritime, civil, oil and gas, power and nuclear, etc. Further dramatic advances are foreseen, which will provide many, further social and economic benefits. This lecture will review the "smart" functions of optical fibres for communications and sensing, illustrated with some cutting edge examples drawn from the research activities of Photonics Research Group at Aston in this area. Challenge of the Unexpected - Severn Trent A MacLaren Memorial Lecture by Tony Wray. To watch the entire video, please visit: http://www.aston.ac.uk/about/news/events/lecturevideos.jsp Tony Wray joined Severn Trent as Managing Director of Severn Trent Water in March 2005, taking over as Chief Executive of Severn Trent Plc as well in October 2007. In that time he has had to manage major legacy issues from a previous regime involving sanctions from Regulator Ofwat and criminal charges by the Serious Fraud Office, as well as unprecedented weather conditions causing major floods and loss of water supplies, while at the same time steering his rejuvenated organisation towards continued improvements and higher standards for the benefit of customers and all Severn Trent's stakeholders. In this lecture Tony outlined lessons learnt and the way forward for Severn Trent to continue to restore its reputation as a water and waste company to be proud of. Diet and Health Inaugural Lecture at Aston University An Inaugural Lecture by Professor Helen Griffiths on Diet and Health - a Radical Hypothesis Watch the entire video at: http://www.aston.ac.uk/about/news/events/lecturevideos.jsp Average life-span has increased in the last century across the world with improved standards of living. However, our health span has not increased in parallel as expected. The burden of disease has gradually shifted to the non-communicable diseases such as chronic inflammatory disease and metabolic syndrome. Cardiovascular disease is a common complication of non-communicable diseases and their increasing prevalence is exacerbated by changes in diet (towards saturated fats and sugars). This lecture will examine what are the changes in our metabolism that contribute to the development of vascular diseases. How can we know if our diet is "biologically healthy"? Why does so much confusion exist over dietary vitamins - are they beneficial or not? Tags: Aston University Diet Health Vitamins Disease Inaugural Lecture Science |

Hospital Superbugs - Aston University Since the discovery of antibiotics in 1929 and their development for treatment of infection, resistance has been a problem. The more antibiotics are used, the more resistance is encouraged. Hospitals now face major problems controlling the spread of resistant bacteria. In his inaugural lecture at Aston University, Professor Peter Lambert discusses the most notorious hospital superbugs, MRSA and Clostridium difficile. What can be done to control them? Can these bugs spread to the community? Are they there already? Finally are there more "superbugs" waiting to threaten our health? Watch the entire video at http://www.aston.ac.uk/about/news/events/lecturevideos.jsp Aston hosts many public lectures, which are free and open to all. What in the world do we hear? Inaugural lecture by Brian Roberts, Professor of Auditory Perception at Aston University ~*~*~*~ Hearing is the process by which we perceive objects and events in the world from the sounds that they produce. However, it is fairly uncommon in everyday life for us to hear a single source of sound in the absence of other sounds. For example, when we listen to the speech of a particular person during a conversation, their speech is often accompanied by the speech of other people and a host of background sounds. Indeed, these other sounds may temporarily mask the particular sound source to which we are paying attention. Therefore, our auditory system is often faced with the challenge of grouping together those sound elements that come from one source, separating them from those arising from other sources, and reconstructing missing information about the source we are trying to attend. Without a solution to this "auditory scene analysis" problem, our perceptions of speech, music, and other sounds would not correspond to the events that produced them. Indeed, listeners with hearing impairment often find dealing with noisy environments especially difficult, such as when trying to follow a conversation in a crowded room. This lecture will consider what we know about the nature of the scene analysis problem, and what perceptual research can tell us about how our auditory system is generally able to overcome the challenges arising from everyday listening conditions.
