Boxing's Revival? Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito fight In the past few year the sport of boxing has taken a huge marketing hit. The suspicions of corruption, multiple governing boards, and ridiculously high amount of pay per view events, have all contributed to the decline in popularioty fo the sweet science. The popularity if mixed martial arts has risen, and the sport of boxing has been written of by many as a boring, and archaic form of fighting. But as it is with many things in life, just when we are about to give up on something we catch a glimmer and since that reminds us of why we fell in love in the first place. The Miguel Cotto- Antonio Margarito fight was a hyped up battle between arguably the two best welterweight fighters in the world. What transpired that evening in Vegas was a special event that revived interest in the sport of boxing. In this week's Sus Deportes segment on Boston Latino TV, Gil Matos and Cesar Doza discuss what this fight did to the national perception of boxing. 2008 Home Run Derby, Red-Carpet Parade and MLB All-Star Game New York City was the host of the 79th All Star Game at the Yankee Stadium, and Boston Latino TV travelled to the big apple to showcase the Latino presence in this great event! Although the 8-player roster of the Home Run Derby didn't include any of our beloved Latino players, there was a huge display of Latino love inside the stadium: fans, jerseys of Alex Rodriguez, Ortiz and Ramirez all over the place, and all the 18 Latino players invited to this year's All Stars Game watching the Derby from the dugouts. 63 Players of the national and American league were invited to this year's All Star Game. 18 of those players were Latinos. And who wonders? Baseball has gone global! 29% of all Major Leaguers are Latino players, a much higher rate than the 10% of Latinos in the roster 10 years ago. There were many new records set this year, but the greatest one was the game itself, not only for the huge display of talent on the field, but for being part of what seems to be a truly long goodbye to Yankee Stadium Tags: manny ramirez joakim soria all star game home run derby red carpet parade a-rod david ortiz boston latino tv 2008 new york araminta romero josh hamilton drew sox hanley yankee stadium hall of fame |

A-Rod's love affair with the press On December 13, 2007, Rodriguez announced the signing of a new 10-year contract with the Yankees, reportedly worth $275 million and $30 million more if he breaks the all-time home run record of 762, making it the richest contract in baseball history. However, press talks more about his personal life than his achievements as player. On May 27, 2007, Rodriguez was spotted at a Toronto strip club with Joslyn Noel Morse, an exotic dancer with Scores Las Vegas who was featured in Playboy's 2001 magazine. On July 2, 2008, the New York Daily News reported that Rodriguez and his wife had separated, after rumors published in Us Weekly magazine, about a possible affair between A-Rod and pop singer Madonna, claims Madonna later denied. Why is Alex Rodriguez such a polarizing figure? Will the negative press hurt his image? Julio Lugo interview at Fenway Park Watch Cesar Doza, our newly acquired sports correspondent, as he interviews Julio Lugo, shortstop of the Boston Red Sox, from the heart of Fenway Park! Originally from Barahona, Dominican Republic, Lugo found a new home in Brooklyn, NY, when his mother Rhina moved with her children to follow the American dream, a dream that was made true when Julio Lugo became a MLB player in 1995 after he was signed by the Houston Astros in 1995. In 2006, Lugo joined the Boston Red Sox and found a place where local community embrace him not only for his well-proven talent in sports, but also for his collaborations in several humanitarian causes. We thank Julio Lugo for his support to our program, and wish him a fast recovery of his injury. We are looking forward to seeing him back to where he belongs: Fenway Park! Junot Diaz sends regards to Boston Latino TV! Junot Díaz (born 31 December 1968) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning Dominican-American writer. He moved to the United States with his parents at age six, settling in New Jersey. Central to Díaz's work is the duality of the immigrant experience. Díaz spent 11 years writing the tale of Oscar Wao--a Spanish pronunciation of Oscar Wilde--a teenage Dominican who buries his broken heart and frustration in sci-fi novels and Star Trek action figures. Oscar's family lives much as Díaz' own family did, the author has said, balancing two lives, two cultures, in New Jersey and their native Dominican Republic. "Oscar Wao" received glowing reviews when it was published by Riverhead Press in September 2007. Time magazine called it "astoundingly great," while book critic Michiko Kakutani of The New York Times said "Oscar Wao" had established Díaz as one of contemporary fiction's most distinctive and irresistible new voices.
