Guyana's Conservation Concession http://www.conservation.org Saving biodiversity is a complex business. But sometimes, conservation solutions are beautifully simple. Take the "conservation concession," an approach pioneered by CI with the government of Guyana. Instead of leasing the land to a logging company, Guyana is leasing 200,000 acres (81,000 hectares) to CI for conservation. Aerial Surveying of Madagascar's Deforestation http://www.conservation.org As an aerial survey specialist, Daniel Juhn flies over the most beautiful places on Earth. He assesses forests and areas under threat. Forests are the "lungs of the earth" in that they release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, reducing greenhouse gases that cause global climate change. 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions come from the burning and clearning of forests, yet forests are cleared at about a rate of one acre per second. The Kayapó Nation: Protectors of the Amazon http://www.conservation.org The Kayapó Nation is composed of indigenous Indians living in the Amazon rainforest. The Amazon forest is increasingly threatened by deforestation caused by fires burning massive areas for agriculture production. Logging, gold mining, and dam construction are other serious threats. Because deforestation is one of the leading causes of climate change, not only does this loss threaten the survival of many indigenous communities such as the Kayapó, it impacts people the world over. Often called the "lungs of the earth," tropical forests help stabilize climate by absorbing the carbon dioxide. The destruction of forests is the second largest source of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. Harrison Ford: Lost There, Felt Here Protect your own acre now http://www.conservation.org/ProtectAnAcre Harrison Ford demonstrates -in a personal way- the pain of deforestation. The burning and clearing of forests is a major cause of global climate change, emitting some 20% of total greenhouse gas emissions - more than all the world's cars, trucks, and airplanes combined.
