Birthday Celebration of King Pumipon Adunyadet King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) turns 78 today in his 60th year of his ascension to the thrown. He is the longest reigning king in Thai history and the longest reigning monarch currently in the world. It seemed the whole city was also heading to the grounds. Mobile food vendors made it tough to walk on the sidewalks and were selling everything from Pad Thai noodles and fried rice to strings of smoking sausages and fried river bugs. The quiet park of the Royal Grounds had transformed into a sea of people with huge island stages covered in lights and massive speakers. Thai foot basketball matches, called Ta Kraw, were underway. We watched two teams try to kick, head, or shoulder a wicker ball into a hoop 40 feet above. After watching a bit of "soccetball" we saw a frenetic crowd watch two Thai kick boxers pummel each other. I must say it was exciting. We left the crowded arena and walked with a crowd carrying yellow candles. We ended up in front of a huge stage with people decked out in uniform, many looked military. Before long, people were shoulder to shoulder and some started passing down their flame to others (like a Holy Saturday service before Easter Sunday) A guy over the speakers started saying a prayer. People started responding. Then the crowd, which must have been over one million, started singing a heartfelt song while raising their candles. Some got emotional and were on the verge of tears. Then there were cheers for the King with an explosion of fireworks directly behind us. We had no idea they were setting off fireworks so close to the crowd. It was shocking. As soon as the fireworks ended, the stages erupted with music and dance. People were dressed in very fancy costumes with big headdresses and plumage. It was like four or five Vegas shows going on at once. Other stalls opened up to pass free food and drink to the masses. I didn't see any cake but it was one incredible party. Adventures in Masai Mara Located about 5 hours west of Nairobi, Masai Mara is the Kenya's greatest park. The Mara is an extension of the Serengeti and covers over 1500sqkm. It contains a staggering amount of game especially during the annual wildebeest migration. There are no fences around the reserves in Kenya and Tanzania allowing the animals to roam freely in search of new grasses for grazing. The wildebeest migration is one of the few large movements of game in the world. The wildebeest give birth to their calves in the South East Serengeti then move into the Western Serengeti before heading north to Masai Mara in July. They feed on the lush grasses of the Mara until October as the Serengeti plains are too dry. In December, the rains return to the Serengeti as does the migration. There are 1.3 million wildebeest; 200,000 zebra; and 350,000 gazelles estimated in the migration. Of course all the lions follow these animals making the Mara the most predator-packed reserve in the world. Cheetahs are very difficult to see in most African parks, but they are very easily seen here. Wildebeest can't pass up the opportunity to drink as they cannot go longer than 5 days without water. They will risk life and limb to do so. In the morning they might cross the croc- infested river only to re-cross the same river later in the afternoon. We camped for 16 days in the park at a community run Masai camp near Talek gate. We can't wait to do it again! Ten Day Camel Safari, Thar Desert Rajasthan This is a short documentary of our trek for ten days into the Thar Desert from Jaisalmer, an ancient city in Rajasthan, India. With just three camels; Papu, Lalu, and Babaloo and our trusted guide Rhman, we set out with all the food and water necessary for the foray. We trekked about 20 km per day going 7 to 8 hours on camel back. We slept on top of the dunes at night and battled dung beetles and the occasional snake. The people of the desert are incredibly hospitable and friendly and we had some amazing interactions. We got to know our camels intimately as well as our guide a hard working man who is passionate about life. Tags: camel safari Thar Desert India trek adventure culture Rajasthan sand dunes riding |

Udaipur Rajasthan, The Venice of the East Udaipur was founded in 1568 by Maharaja Udai Singh II and is surrounded by lakes, forests, and the Aravalli Mountain Range. Beautiful palaces and temples lie around and in Lake Pichola which is the central focus of Udaipur. The City Palace Complex, the largest palace in Rajasthan and Jagniwas Palace, the now luxurious hotel in the middle of the lake where James Bond's "Octo***" lived are key features. You can even find the world's biggest turban here. These opulent Rajput structures situated directly on the lake with mountains towering behind make this spot feel like the setting of some grand fairytale. Unfortunately, the town reminds the visitor about it's Bond fame by playing Octo*** every night at 7:30. It can be heard in stereo from any rooftop across town. The lake is always full of people swimming, bathing, or doing their laundry. We were very fortunate to see the lake full as the monsoons were very good this summer. This is definitely one of the most beautiful places in the world. Tags: Udaipur Rajasthan Lake Pichola City Jagniwas Turban Palace James Bond Octo*** India Maharaja Aravalli Mountains fairytal |

Jodhpur, Mehrangarh Fort, and the Sadar Market Jodhpur is a hot and bustling trading town located on the fringe of the Great Thar Desert. It has been an important trading town for centuries and is a center for incense and spices. It became rich and powerful from the sale of opium and sandalwood as well as controlling a vital route on the subcontinent. Maharajas poured their wealth into art and architecture and built one of the mightiest forts in the world, Mehrangarh Fort. Originally built in 1459, it completely dominates the city below. Scaling the walls is not an option as they are hundreds of feet tall and unbelievably thick. Inside the fort is a series of courtyards, arcades, and palace apartments. The Raj and Mugal architecture is incredibly opulent. The rooms where the Maharaja would give an audience are richly decorated and have posh floor pillows, silver lined fans and umbrellas. Women were excluded from any meetings or official gatherings but had secrete balconies and screened walls from which they could spy on the proceedings. The Karni Mata Rat Temple, Deshnok The Karni Mata Temple is an important Jain pilgrimage site. It is a beautiful temple made of marble with solid silver doors. However, it is not the architecture of this temple that attracts non-Jain tourists; it is the thousands of rats that inhabit it. There are special holes and tunnels around the temple to facilitate the rats' movements as well as a wire screen over the courtyard to protect them from birds of prey. Jain pilgrims are anointed with ash while the scurrying critters run over their feet. This is considered very auspicious as is spotting a rare white rat. Bowls of milk and water are strategically placed throughout the temple and pilgrims feed the rats balls of sugar. You may be asking, "Why all the fuss about rats?" Well, these Jain pilgrims believe that the rats are their ancestors. Tags: Karni Mata rat temple worship deshnok Jain pilgrim religion reincarnation India Rajasthan |

The Golden Temple of the Sikhs, Amritsar The Golden Temple is the holiest place for the Sikhs. It is a massive complex with the two-story marble temple Hari Mandir Sahib with its 750 kg golden dome in the center. A 5000 sq meter pool surrounds the temple and a large marble walk borders the pool. Large colonnades, clock towers, minarets, assembly halls, gates, and shops surround the complex in gleaming white marble. Guru's Bridge provides access to Hari Mandir over the pool. The architecture is a blend of Hindu and Muslim as is the religion itself. Four priests in the Hari Mandir chant in Punjabi on loud speakers from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh's holy book. Pilgrims leave their shoes outside the gates and walk through a cleansing pool to purify the feet before stepping down on the marble walk way. Then they progress in a clockwise fashion around the pool praying before they go over the bridge to the temple. A constant chanting of the priest echoes across the complex creating a hypnotic effect. The Golden Temple is a peaceful place but the vibe is surreal and strange. The temple is very well taken care of, in fact immaculate. Pilgrims and other guest including tourists may stay in the dorms and eat in the communal kitchen for free. The Pushkar Camel Fair Pushkar is a holy city that has several claims to fame. It is oriented around the Pushkar Lake where ghats (steps) rise up out of the lake's edge up to temples. There are over 400 temples in Pushkar but the most famous is the Brahman temple, unique in all of India. The medieval town is a maze of small streets and alleys packed with bazaars, cafes, and hotels. The entire town rests in a valley with temple-studded mountains. The town is famous for its Pushkar Camel Fair. It is a weeklong event that mixes the trading of an estimated 60,000 camels from the numerous Rajasthani villages across the state and a religious pilgrimage where two million people come to the lake to bathe on Kartika Purnima. Every year on the full moon of Kartika, Hindus come from all over India to cleanse their sins in the lake. They descend the ghats that completely surround the lake to wash. Jaislamer and the Dussehra Festival The amazing Golden Fort of Jaisalmer is a living fort. It holds 300 families, one quarter of the city's populations. The fort has 99 bastions (lucky number?) that snake around the lower walls. Like Meherangarh Fort in Jodhpur, Jaisalmer's Golden Fort was built in 1156 and maintained by fiercely independent rulers who accrued enormous amounts of wealth through imposing heavy levies on caravans passing through their territory. They made huge expenditures to create opulent palaces and impenetrable fortresses to protect them. The Dussehra Festival is a very popular celebration in Rajasthan around October where Lord Rama kills the demon king Ravana. A burning of an effigie of the demon follows a loud parade.
