UT Pipe Organ Tucked away in a corner of the University of Texas campus sits a fusion of art and science, metal and wood. 25 years ago this year, Dr. Frank Speller worked closely with organ designer Pieter Visser to create a truly stunning work of art. One of the largest pipe organs in Texas, it is an awe-inspiring, engineering marvel. Over 5,000 pipes, some 16 feet tall and as big as your thigh, while some are as small as a pencil. And sitting humbly at the bench within the intricate landscape of levers, keys and pedals sits Dr. Speller, who seems to effortlessly coax the monolithic musical instrument to push air through the maze of pipes and produce a surprising variety of sound. The organ can create everything from a whisper of an angel to the booming clarions of Hell and it does it with amazing percision and clarity. My only regret is that the video pales in comparison to seeing and hearing this massive machine in person. Tags: UT Pipe Organ University of Texas Dr. Frank Speller organ pipes music |

The Yellow Bike Project In what had to be the hottest building I've ever been, I met Jennifer Schaffer, a coordinator for the Yellow Bike Project. As I interviewed her for this video, I couldn't help, but notice the scene going on behind her -- the other coordinators working at a feverish pace to get as many bikes fixed by the coming Saturday for the fundraising bike sale. Over the next week and a half I filmed many Yellow Bikers as they prepared the shop to be moved (all with human power), and test out the gooseneck trailers which would serve to move the large stuff. I saw the shop go from over-full to stripped clear. On the day of the move, it was amazing to see so many folks come out to grab whatever they could fit in their small trailers, backpacks or just on their person. While the video may not capture the truly inspiring display of a 100 plus bike caravan moving an entire shop in one trip, let me tell you it was something. So now that their shop is closed, if you need help fixing your bike or of you're itching to volunteer you can go to the Treasure Island shop at 1720 East 12th Street. The Yellow Bike Project also needs you help with fundraising to help build the new shop. Currently, they are at $100,466 of their target $250,000. http://www.austinyellowbike.org/ Tags: bikes the yellow bike project austin texas riding maintenance move |

The Luling Watermelon Thump I finally made it out to the legendary watermelon thump in Luling, Tx. I've know about this annual festival for years, and Docubloggers was the perfect excuse to take part in the thump. I'm telling a half truth -- I didn't actually "take part" in the watermelon seed spitting contest or drown myself in the watermelon eating contest. But trust me, after filming and editing all of the various footage of watermelon eating, spitting, and eating and spitting -- you will feel watermeloned out! Since 1954, Luling has held the Watermelon thump during the last Thursday through Sunday in June. And it's one of the hottest times of year making watermelon appeal to the senses even more. The people of Luling honor the watermelon crop with a watermelon parade featuring the elected watermelon queen, live music until 1 am each evening, a carnival, food, beer and of course the contests. The contests are a huge part of the festival tradition. In 1962, the biggest watermelon was auctioned off weighing 80 pounds and 8 ounces. In 1981, the Guinness World Record was set for the furthest watermelon seed spit, which was recorded at 65 feet and 4 inches. This really is a long spit compared to the champion of the 2008 contest, which came to about 39 feet. People say that wind and the way you spit the seed factors into the distance. Maybe back in 1981 it was a pleasantly breezy and cooler day compared to this past festival's hot and still weather. In this docublog, you'll see all the different elements that make the festival, but the seed spitting and watermelon eating contests will make your jaw drop. Folks travel from all over Texas to participate. You'll never think of a watermelon in quite the same way after seeing this docublog.... Barrington Living History Farm - Hands & Feet Rhonda rolled steadily east across the flattening Texas landscape toward Washington-on-the-Brazos as the sun continued its scalding ascent into the clear blue morning sky. Rhonda, KLRU's Kia Rondo, was laden with equipment and bustling with conversation. It was going to be a beautiful summer day. Washington-on-the-Brazos is considered to be the birthplace of Texas. It was in this East Texas town in 1836 that Texas declared its independence from Mexico. At the site today is the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site and the Barrington Living History Farm, "a representation of the farm founded by Dr. Anson Jones, last President of the Republic of Texas." I didn't quite know what to expect upon arrival at Barrington. I only knew it was a working farm and that the day's event, called Hands & Feet: A Musical Celebration, included a display of period instruments and music. We pulled Rhonda into the parking lot and walked with our equipment in the late morning heat toward the entrance. What greeted us there set the tone and pace for the rest of the day. Arriving with us were volunteers and employees of the farm that were dressed in period clothing. They crossed over a bridge leading to the farmhouses and stables and left behind their modern lives and the automobiles that brought them to the site. We were suddenly out of place with our Docubloggers t-shirts and modern cameras. It was the 1850s. We spent some time filming and getting to know the folks working at the event before guests arrived, and I fell headlong into my world behind the looking glass, experiencing their world of the past. The volunteers and workers go so far beyond dressing up in period costumes -- they are educators, entertainers, and keepers of the flame of history. At noon, Barb King and Connie Threadgill rang the lunchtime bell for all the folks working at the event. From across the fields they converged on the small kitchen shack for home cooked cornbread, potatoes, pork, and a helping of fresh tomatoes (ignore the paper plates!). As I filmed in the kitchen, the conversation about coyotes, the weather, the crops, and the day to day workings of the farm took me to a time in the distant past where my camera and my show didn't exist. It was at that moment when I saw just how much effort has gone into preserving the life and times of Texas history.
