Where I was, Shout Outs, Updates (sorry for the loong vid) Hey everyone, my first unedited looong vlog in a while. I have lots of vids ready to edit, but have been too busy with work to do them so I just wanted to let you all know what I have been up to, make some long overdue shout outs and introduce you to some vids and channels I have been meaning to talk about for a while now. Vids of my vacation are coming up, as shot with my Xacti CA8 and my Canon HF10 so you can see how they look yourself if you are looking at getting a camera. Many thanks to The Daily English Show for their commentary on my How to Learn Japanese vid, aside from being the best Japan based English learning channel on YouTube, and brilliantly edited and assembled regular videos, Sarah, the presenter is also a Kiwi, and I just like watching for the fantastic accent! Also, I have done another vid in Japanese responding to a vlog made to me by oborogin san - he is a guy from Fukuoka in New York doing what many gaijins do with YouTube in Japan. So why did I get the Canon? - Canon has the best optics going of any digital video camera in this category right now. Panasonic and Sony have good competitors, but I have used and like Canon, and most reviewers seem to agree that Canon is the leader right now. - I want to take surfing and rugby vids, not just YouTube ones, so optics are important to me for that. - For size, the new Xacti isn't THAT compact. It is much bigger than previous Xactis (that optically, are just toys) and doesn't exactly fit comfortably into your jeans pocket. The Canon is plenty small to unnoticably fit into any rucksack or bag. Anyway, that is why I chose. The big test is next week! Bonus Sumo: Ama's Win With Slow Motion and English Comments! Hikosaemon here and as promised a special replay of the bout on Day 8 between Wakanoho of Russia and Ama of Mongolia, with a slow motion replay and English commentary jammed in! I was lucky enough to be at the Kokugikan with my video camera to see the moment live, and while 2008 has been a fantastic year for classic matches with the facedowns between the two Yokozuna Asashoryu and Hakuho taking center stage, for pure skill and excitement, Ama showed us one of the memorable matches of the year with his stunning reversal against Wakanoho. You would have already heard me say in my earlier vids that I like Ama and think he is a great wrestler to watch - still small in size, but the heart of a horse, with skill, speed and crazy moves to win against his bigger adversaries. Watch this space - he could still make Ozeki this year, and who knows, with a bit more weight to ground him, he could be Yokozuna material, as he showed taking out Yokozuna Hakuho on Day 10. This is a cracker of a tournament with Bulgarian Kotooshu holding the sole lead on Day 11 having taken out Asashoryu leaving the yokozuna with two losses and the Bulgarian with a clean sheet. Kotooshu faces the other yokozuna, Hakuho - with one loss to his name tomorrow on Day 12. Kotooshu will virtually guarantee the win and be the first European ever to win a sumo tournament if he can dispose of the other mongol Yokozuna. It should be great! That bout was the migi-yotsu form of ai-yotsu (4-hands inside/outside). Migi-yotsu vs. hidari-yotsu is determined by inside grip (migi = right)" My claim that the overhand grip is everything in sumo (as a way of being able to leverage your opponent) is thus also apparently also off the mark also. Back to the drawing board... Thanks to Jasonry for the lesson, and yes, I will try to be diligent about learning a bit more (he recommends sumo-forum.net). Ah well. Still a great match... English below! 本日相撲を見に行きました。楽しかったよ～！ ただ、多くの人は楽しい見方の秘密を気づいていないと思ったところでこのビデオを作りました。 たとえば、こんな事を知っていますかね： １）貧乏な人でも、朝から行ったら末席からでも相撲が楽しめる ２）12時から４時まで、200円で日本の一番おいしいちゃんこが食べれる とか、色々、今日の一番注目の取り組みを自分のへんてこな解説もつけていますので楽しんで見てください！ Hey everyone, sorry no subitiles here (I wanted to get this up fast) but let me talk you through the vid. It is a guide to the most fun way to spend a day at the sumo. Key points are, as covered in the video 1) Get there early, so you can sit on the cushions at the very front before the ticket holders arrive (they allow this) 2) Between 12 and 4, join the mysterious line of Japanese people at the back on the ground floor. Not many gaijins seem to know that for 200 yen (2 bucks), you can get the best "chanko" (sumo wrestler food) anywhere in Japan. 3) Remember to buy some sake, some yakitori, a bento of your favorite wrestler, and a box of sumo wrestler chocolates to take back and share with and brag about to your coworkers and friends. Konnichi wa, Fatso! Cultural Sensitivty and an Intro to SUMO One of the culture shocks that you get when you come to Japan is the completely different set of values attached to what is and isn't socially acceptable conversation. For example, it is fine to point out someone has gotten fat, but terrible to say that they have aged, or have short legs. This is one of the cultural rabbit holes you fall into when you arrive in Japan, and having gone through and come out the other side, I think it is a good thing that peopel can talk about other people's weight - I don't think that not talking has done much good for western countries... The other topic I want to talk about a bit is Sumo wrestling. The Summer tournament just started in Tokyo and I am doing my best to track the tournament each day. It is hard when you start out because there are so many wrestlers who all look the same, but here are some recommendations for getting into the support: Asashoryu - Sumo's most badass yokozuna ever. Rowdy, arrogant, flaunts the rules, and is far and away the best wrestler in Japanese sumo in a decade, possibly ever. Hakuho - another mongolian, a fellow yokozuna and the complete opposite of Asashoryu. Ama - another Mongol, small and agile, with all the Mongol wrestling moves (3 times more moves than Japanese sumo) that he uses to full effect to regularly beat guys much bigger. Takamisakari - Japan's answer to Forrest Gump. If he weren't wrestling, he would be in some kind of institution, but he is wrestling, and each day he staggers out like robocop, blind as a bat without his enormous glasses, he punches himself repeatedly before a match, and walks out crying everytime he loses. Hugely popular, which attracts sponsors to his bouts, which is an incentive to his stronger opponents. Poor guy... Kakizoe - my nominee for best natural for playing the role of a respectful but loyal henchman in a Japanese version of the godfather. Kitazakura - should have retired long ago, shouldn't throw all the damn salt, shouldn't pump his fists after winning and punch the dohyo after losing. Growing old discracefully.
