Novi Sad - 19th century cannonball (part II) Another shot I've made of the building, normal view. Interesting piece of town's history - a cannonball stuck in the wall of an old building in our Novi Sad, located in Dunavska street. It is the only evidence left of the heavy bombing of Novi Sad (Újvidék) on 12 june 1849; two thirds of the city were destroyed by the Hungarian army, during their revolution. Wikipedia's bit on the bombing of Novi Sad in 1848: "During the Revolution of 1848-1849, Novi Sad was part of Serbian Vojvodina, a Serbian autonomous region within Habsburg Empire. In 1849 the Hungarian army located on the Petrovaradin Fortress bombarded and devastated the city, which lost much of its population (According to 1850 census there were only 7,182 citizens in the city compared with about 20,000 in 1820)." World's oldest known alligator - Muja (part II) Another shot I've made of the great fella. Filmed at Belgrade's Zoo on 19. VI 2008. He's 70. He survived the 1941, 1944 & 1999 bombings of Belgrade. He's cool. Some info about him from Wiki's article on alligators: "An alligator's lifespan is usually estimated in the range of 50 years or more. A specimen named Muja has resided in the Belgrade Zoo in Serbia since 1937, making it at least 71 years old. Another specimen, Čabulītis, in Riga Zoo, Latvia died in 2007 being more than 72 years old." Well, ol' Čabu (1 april 1935 - 21 august 2007) is no longer with us, so many years to our Muja! (he'll be 71 on 12 september - although he was already full grown when he was brought here) Article (in Serbian) from the website of Belgrade's ZOO on Muja, with some nice shots: http://tinyurl.com/6mpanm Tags: oldest alligator in the world belgrade beograd serbia srbija |

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (part II) Rare footage of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) filmed in the summer of 1927, talking about his famous detective and amusing reactions from his fans. Interesting how he didn't have high opinion of Dr. Watson, heh... This was part of some documentary; the Doyle footage itself is originally 11 minutes long, according to IMDB. Canned Heat - Human Condition, live in Kralingen 1970 The very last filmed footage of the late great Alan Wilson; 28 june 1970, he's singing his composition "Human Condition", written about his experience with the psychiatrist after his second suicide attempt. Two months later he was dead. RIP, Blind Owl. P.S. check out the 'sharing stuff' bit at the end, heh... Tags: canned heat alan blind owl wilson 1970 |
